3 Pastor s Notes Did you ever ask yourself when does life begin? There are a variety of answers, but the real answer should come from the study of life, biology. There really is a scientific, or rational, answer that is independent of ethical, moral, political or religious criteria. In fact anything outside of this is merely speculation. Human life begins the second the sperm joins the ova (egg) no matter what environment it finds itself. Once this happens, a cell called a zygote forms. Immediately this single cell starts a complex self-organization and selfassembly. Within 30 minutes it develops its own complete genome. This living organism has its own power sources which turns its own protein on and off, solving its own problems of self-construction to develop an independent corporal structure which will only end with its death. This one celled animal, if not interrupted, will form a human being which will someday physically present itself. No other human cell has this ability. Contemporary bioethicists concentrate on the activities which are attributed to human behavior. They cite the fact that many zygotes do not embed themselves on the uterine wall and thus conclude that zygotes are not really human enough to be considered persons. However, what they do not say is that fertilization of ova does not necessarily produce a 46 chromosome zygote. Many fertilizations produce a cell (aneuploid) with insufficient chromosomes and thus do not constitute a human person. A conception is not always guaranteed. Biologically it is not an easy task. Identical twins have also been a justification that a zygote is not a person. After all the second twin would have to develop sometime after the original zygote was formed. Could it just be that the genome is not essential for the formation of a human being? Could it be that DNA, the blueprint of the human being, is not the determining factor of what makes an individual an individual? Could there be something else? It looks like the possession of a genome is not what makes a person a person. Could it be the soul? The problem is that the soul, being a spiritual, cannot be measured by science. Aristotle and St. Thomas Aquinas accepted the definition of a soul as the primary endowment by which a body has life. This power is the expression of a being that does different activities as it develops. We cannot, for example, expect an infant to recite a soliloquy by Shakespear because he has not developed that capacity to express himself, but an infant certainly can express himself! Is the complex expression of the developing zygote really an expression of a person in a very primitive body? It seems that what we now know about embryonic life actually indicates that the soul is immediately present at the fertilization of the ova. What is different about the human species is its power to utilize an intellect. Our intellect is rooted in our soul and not in our body because the intellect is not material. We teach in our faith that the soul never disintegrates even though our body eventually will. This intellect continues through life and continues after death. Parents often say that their children are very smart and we attribute this to their education and maturity, but what about the zygote? How brilliant is that one celled animal that can make its genome in a half hour? What an expression of a person! True, animals can do the same, but in the end they just do not think like us. They are different. I hope that these rational observations make the case for a soul to be instantly present when the sperm joins with the ovum. True, the Church has never defined when the soul comes into the body. The Church admits that we just cannot measure a soul. But in the very early Church, abortion was defined as a grave sin even though the question of the existence of the soul was never understood at that time. In 1974 Paul VI wrote, From the time that the ovum is fertilized, a life is begun which is neither that of the father nor of the mother; it is rather the life of a new human being with his own growth. It would never be made human if it were not human already. Today the fate of the human embryo and the child in utero is in the hands of politicians, lawyers and judges. It has been taken away from biology, the study of life and relegated to whim. Just as the tobacco companies got us addicted to cigarettes, so private industries and governments have gotten us addicted to contraception. Most contraceptives make us sick by halting normal body functions. When they are given to teenagers, they disrupt the developing hormonal balances of their bodies. They also take love and spirituality, two non-measurable and immaterial aspects found only in the soul, out of marriage by making husband and wife turn against each other by lust as they loose the beauty of their young bodies. The contraceptive ideology, when it fails, turns the ideologist into a killer by aborting their unplanned child. It is true that many people do not die for commandments of God, but they do die for ideologies. We are always desiring an easy way around the Natural Law because of our fallen nature. There seems to be a corollary for ideologies. While the ideologist is willing to die for his cause, he is also willing to kill for his cause. People demand the right to control their bodies and will kill unborn babies when they choose. People demand to have a child when their bodies will not let them have a child, but they will kill when they do not come out the way they want them. But God tells us that life is a gift from Him and not us. As a nation we seem not to be able to deal with that or Him. Fr. Healing Hearts Support Group Healing Hearts Support Group is for adults that are affected by the pain of separation and divorce. I am pleased to announce our new session which will cover topics such as stress, anger, blame, guilt forgiveness, annulment, spirituality and much more. Divorce and Beyond will begin on Thursday, October 30th from 7:30 PM 9 PM, at St. Veronica s School Library, Howell, NJ. Registration and a small fee are required for those attending the program. Participants in this program will experience hope and healing simply by listening and sharing experiences and insights with others. Volunteers Needed For Meals on Wheels Delivery Volunteers with vehicles are needed to help with late morning delivery of Meals on Wheels from the Howell Senior Center. We need adults who can pick up meals at 10:45 AM, once a week from the senior center at 298 Old Tavern Rd. in Howell and deliver to homebound seniors living in Howell Township and portions of Farmingdale. Routes generally have between four and seven stops, and a route takes about one hour to complete. If you can spare an hour once a week or if you would be willing to be an occasional substitute, please contact Danielle at the Howell Senior Center at ext Training is provided. Please Write to the State Assembly There are two bills in our State Assembly which will soon be voted upon Aid in Dying for the Terminally Ill Act (A2270) and The New Jersey Death with Dignity Act (S382). Both bills will legalize physician-assisted suicide. I hope to write you next week during Respect Life Month about what the ramifications are if these bills are legalized. For now let me just say that it will bring to an end of physicians being trusted in caring for our health. These bills have been passed in Europe and at least two countries allow physicians to kill patients whom they deem not worthy of living.
