SUNDAY THOUGHT Matthew 18:21-35 George Bobofchak Steve Palocko Contribution for Weekend Sept.9/10 2017: Total Offering : $15,682.68 Sunday Collection: $12,029.68 Faith Direct: $3,653.00 Hurricane Harvey Emergency Collection: $8,042.00 Poor Box: $170.00 In our Gospel reading for this Sunday Jesus addresses the need for forgiveness. Sometimes we may confuse the need to forgive for making excuses for wrongs committed. We may hear others or sometimes we ourselves say, I can t forgive him or her for hurting me because they knew what they were doing. He deliberately went out of his way to cause me pain. How can I forgive her? But isn t that the whole point of forgiveness? There really is no excuse for wrong-doing. I was free and yet I made the decision to do something wrong. That is exactly why I need to be forgiven. Jesus was preoccupied with forgiveness because He knew that it was so important for our lives. We can live lives that are broken and full of unrest if we harbor anger and vengeance toward others. This attitude can eat away at us. We can nurture this attitude and turn others against the offender. We can then cause even more damage to relationships. Or we can make the decision to forgive. Life is too valuable to be destroyed by an unforgiving heart. 1

TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SEPTEMBER 17, 2017 CELEBRATING THE SAINTS Saint Raphael Kalinowski, Priest (1897-1907) Saint Raphael Kalinowski was born Jozef Kalinowski to a noble family in the city of Vilnius, now called Vilna. At the time he was born, the area was known as a Russian partition, though it had formerly been part of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. He lost his mother at a young age. Like his father, a professor, he excelled at mathematics. Eventually, he enter the Academy of Military Engineering, graduating with the rank of lieutenant, and the job of mathematics lecturer. In 1863, Raphael joined the Polish uprising as the minister of war at Vilna, determined to use his influence to prevent the loss of life. The next year the Russians arrested him. He was marched to the Siberian salt mines on foot. When he returned to his family ten years later, Raphael s brother observed, These long years of deprivation have left carved in my brother s face the traces of unspeakable suffering. But what a change in his soul! His appearance spoke of his modesty, his recollection, and continual union with God. Unable to remain in Russian territory, Jozef went to Paris, where after three years he joined the Carmelites, taking the name Raphael of Saint Joseph. He was ordained in Czena, near Krakow, Poland, where he soon became a sought-after confessor. Even Orthodox Christians asked for his spiritual direction; Raphael longed to gather them into the fold of the Roman Catholic Church. Upon his death in 1907 at the age of 72, Saint Raphael was popularly declared a saint. Saint John Paul II canonized him in 1991. 50+ SOCIAL CLUB St. Anthony's 50+ Social Club will have our meeting on Thursday September 21, 2017 in the Hospitality Room of the church. All 50+ers are welcome. The meeting will begin at 12:00 PM (Noon) with the Rosary and then we will enjoy some pizza and salad. After lunch we will have a little fun with Brain Games presented by Leanne Pelecky of Saber Health Care. If time permits, we will play bingo for $1 a card with all money collected given out as prize money, join other players for a game of Pinnacle cards, or just enjoy the camaraderie with fellow social club members. We hope to see you there! 2017 CATHOLIC COMMUNICATION CAMPAIGN The weekend of September 23-24, our parish will take up the collection for the Catholic Communications Campaign. An envelope for this campaign is in your monthly packet. This collection communicates the Gospel through Catholic social media activities and enriches our faith through podcasts, television, radio, and print media. Half of all proceeds remain in our diocese and support local needs, so please be generous in this collection. PRO-LIFE GROUP The St. Anthony Pro-Life ministry would like to extend a big thank you to everyone who supported our Krispy Kreme Donut sale the weekend of September 9/10, 2017. We collected $714.00 with the sale of donuts and the many generous donations from our parishioners. Thank you for once again making our donut sale a success and for supporting our cause. POSSIBLY I CAN HELP.. My name is Mary Lou Fleck, and as a fellow parishioner, I thought it would be helpful to communicate my new role at your neighbor, Mt. Alverna Village. For more than six years, I have been the Admission Coordinator, and now have been given the new position as Business Development Liaison. My background as a Social Worker and Nursing Home Administrator has provided me with 40 years of experience with resident, families, and our healthcare partners, when they were seeking assistance for Seniors needing Rehabilitation, Memory Support, Long Term Care or Assisted Living. I can help you by visiting your loved one or Senior, in the hospital or home, assess their needs, and answer any questions. Colleen Ontko, Admissions Coordinator, also has many years of experience with Senior care and Admissions. If either of us can be of assistance, don t hesitate to contact Mt. Alverna Village at 440-843- 7800 or https://www.franciscanministries.org. 2

ANTHONY OF PADUA CHURCH POTLUCK AND A MOVIE All women are invited to join the Women s Faith Ministry on Sunday, October 1 from 4:00 to 7:30 p.m. in the Hospitality Room at St. Anthony for a potluck dinner followed by the movie War Room. The movie focuses on a family who seemingly have it all. But as they go through tough times, a new friend helps them find happiness through prayer as they develop their own War Room where prayer and discernment lead to resolution. If you can, please bring something of your choice for the potluck dinner. Beverages, popcorn and paper products will be provided by WFM. Seating is limited so please RSVP by September 25 and leave your name, phone number and email address (if you have one) with the parish office at (440) 842-2666 or by sending it in an email to wfmstanthony@gmail.com. SEMINARIAN OF THE WEEK Let s promote vocations by praying for our diocesan seminarians. RCIA CORNER PARMA, OHIO RCIA has already begun, but it is not too late to join. If you know someone who is interested in becoming Roman Catholic, encourage them to contact the rectory and speak with one of the priests. A relationship with the Lord is a great treasure. CATECHETICAL SUNDAY Today the Church celebrates Catechetical Sunday to recognize and thank those whom the parish community has designated to serve as catechists. The theme for this year is, Living as Missionary Disciples. This is also a great opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all of us to rededicate ourselves to this mission as a community of faith. Please pray for Cameron Popik. HEY CATHOLIC! DID YOU KNOW Did you know that the Church has three kinds of holy oil? The Oil of Catechumens is used to anoint men, women, and children seeking to receive the Sacrament of Baptism. The Oil of the Infirm is used to anoint those who are seriously ill, chronically ill, or experiencing the effects of getting older. The Sacred Chrism is used to anoint men, women, and children after Baptism and at Confirmation. Sacred Chrism is also used for the ordination of priests and bishops and the consecration of churches and altars. How about that! If interested, please call Randy Harris at 440-842-2666. WEEKLY MASS REMINDER Consider coming to Mass without a watch. Allow Jesus to have all of your attention. CHRISTIAN SPIRITUALITY CORNER The sign of the cross is the most terrible weapon against the devil. Thus the Church wishes not only that we should have it continually in front of our minds to recall to us just what our souls are worth and what they cost Jesus Christ, but also that we should make it at every juncture ourselves; when we go to bed, when we awaken during the night, when we get up, when we begin any action, and above all, when we are tempted. St. John Vianney LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA Are you always telling yourself that you need to spend more time developing your spiritual life, but cannot seem to find time to do so? If so, then please check out our selection of CDs on the Lighthouse Media display. These CDs are great to listen to while driving in your car. 4

PARMA, OHIO AWARENESS MONTH October is Awareness month in Catholic Charities Heroin/Opioid Awareness Campaign. When addiction dominates a family, knowing where to seek help can seem elusive. This Fall awareness campaign s monthly focus features bulletin blurbs and social media posts on how to break the silence, raise awareness of where to turn for help, and how communities can decrease opioid availability. Look for Catholic Charities supported panel forums near your parish in October. For information on raising awareness of how we can all have an impact, visit the Catholic Charities Hope and Healing Beyond Heroin page at www.ccdocle.org or the Greater Than Heroin initiative at www.greaterthanheroin.com. EVANGELIZATION TIP Get a picture of the Pope for your home. It will encourage your love for the Holy Father while also letting others know that the Bishop of Rome is a special person in your life. CATHOLIC GLOSSARY Papal Colors: The term papal colors refers to the official colors for the Holy Father. At one time, the papal colors were yellow and red, but Napoleon adopted these colors for his troops in Italy. In 1808, Pius VII chose white and yellow, and these colors are still used today.
