SUNDAY THOUGHT John 18:33-37 On this last Sunday of the Liturgical Year, we celebrate the Feast of Christ the King. Throughout His ministry Jesus avoided the title of King. He commanded demons to hold their tongues about His true identity and told His disciples to keep their growing awareness as to who He really was concealed. Now only at the very end of His life, when there could be no misconception as to the true nature of His kingship, does He let His true identity known. Jesus will fit none of our common notions of kingship. Throughout the ages, monarchs have come and gone, yet no king has ever captured hearts like Jesus has captured the hearts of men and women. Never was there another ruler who humbled himself unto death to save even His disloyal subjects, let alone those who proved themselves loyal. Just as Jesus love is absolute, so too, is His claim over us. He is our King, but we must decide whether He will reign supreme in our lives or not. 1

OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, KING OF THE UNIVERSE NOVEMBER 25, 2018 CELEBRATING THE SAINTS Saint Stanislaus Kostka, Religious (1550-1568) From childhood, Stanislaus, the son of a Polish senator, was intelligent and quiet, with an expansive inner life. He preferred prayer and took to mortification. At fourteen, Stanislaus went to study in Vienna in the company of his brother Paul, and their tutor, Jan Bilinsky. Their first lodgings were in a Jesuit -run house. After the house closed suddenly, Paul found them rooms in the house of a Lutheran. When Stanislaus objected, Paul derided him for his piety. Over the next two years, Paul s impatience with his brother deepened into a consistent pattern of verbal and physical abuse, which Jan did nothing to stop. At last, Stanislaus became dangerously ill. With the help of Saint Barbara, his patroness, he recovered, and made a plan to join the Jesuits. He slipped away one night from Paul and Jan, and made his way on foot to Rome, some 350 miles away. His nine joyful months in the order were marked by his certain obedience and frequent ecstatic prayer. Then, illness overtook Stanislaus again. Paul arrived in Rome to take his brother home, only to discover that he had died. He and Jan were instrumental in the process of Stanislaus beatification. The blessed boy never had any good from Paul, Jan testified, and we both knew all the time the holiness and devotion of all he did. Paul became a Jesuit priest at the age of sixty. Saint Stanislaus Kostka s feast day is November 13 th. SOCIAL CONCERNS COMMISSION A sincere THANK YOU to all those who baked for the West Side Catholic Center luncheon on Tuesday, November 20, 2018. Who is home when? The more you know your neighbors, the better they can be extra eyes, ears, and a helpful hand to your children. Be those eyes for your neighbors children too. Daily Marriage Tip for October 8, 2018 from http://www.foryourmarriage.org CHRISTIAN SPIRITUALITY CORNER Do you want our Lord to give you many graces? Visit him often. WEEKLY MASS REMINDER Great importance should also be given to a Mass celebrated with any community, but especially with the parish community, inasmuch as it represents the universal Church at a given time and place, and chiefly in the common Sunday celebration from the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, 113. HEY CATHOLIC! DID YOU KNOW Did you know that many Catholics have contributed to the good of society through science? Maria Gaetana Agnesi (16 May 1718 9 January 1799) was an Italian mathematician and theologian. She was the first woman to write a mathematics handbook and the first woman appointed as a mathematics professor at a university. More Catholics to come in the coming weeks CATHOLIC GLOSSARY Religious: A religious is a man or woman bound by the three vows of religious (poverty, chastity, and obedience) and who are observing a common rule of life according to the Order or Congregation they belong. Ex. Franciscans, Ursuline Sisters, Jesuits Church Etiquette with Monsignor Manners Monsignor Manners says: A Catholic always apologizes when they were wrong and asks for forgiveness. It is the right thing to do. 4

ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA CHURCH BLESSING OF THE WEEK The Book of Blessings is the liturgical book used by priests and deacons to bless people or objects for religious use. If you come across a blessing you need to receive, do not be afraid to ask a priest or deacon. This week s blessing is the Blessing of Pilgrims. A pilgrimage to a holy place, to the tomb of a saint, or to a shrine has great pastoral value. Pilgrimages are occasions for conversion, spiritual growth, and the advancement of the work of the Church. On the pilgrimage, pilgrims become traveling heralds of Christ. A special celebration can be arranged for the blessing of pilgrims at their departure or on their return. PARMA, OHIO CHRISTMAS WAFERS Christmas Wafers (Oplatki) will be available after masses next weekend, December 1/2, 2018 as well as following weekends, while supplies last. They also may be purchased at the rectory office during regular business hours. The cost remains $3.00 for a package of four (4) wafers. Oplatki, pronounced oh-pwahtkee, are thin wafers, similar to Communion hosts. They are made of two ingredients: wheat flour and water. These wafers have beautiful Christmas images stamped into them. You do not have to be Polish to enjoy this beautiful tradition with your family. Since the wafers come in an envelope with the Oplatki tradition and history printed on the back, you can share this explanation with your loved ones. Use it at your Christmas meal. SOCIAL CONCERNS COMMISSION A great big THANK YOU to Fr. Dale for his support and to all of our most generous parishioners during our USO DRIVE FOR OUR TROOPS.
