SUNDAY THOUGHT Mark 12:28-34 In response to the scribe s question in today s Gospel as to what is the foundation of a good life, Jesus tells the man that he must have an undivided heart. Jesus message is meant for us also and it is both simple, and yet as we well know, very challenging. Love with everything that is within you, that is with your whole heart, mind, soul, and strength, and you will be happy. To do anything else will prevent you from reaching the ultimate goal of happiness. Paradoxically though we will never reach this goal of an undivided heart without first setting priorities and limitations in our lives. It might sound strange but it is true. Without first focusing our attention on the one who deserves our love above all else, we will never make progress toward that undivided heart. Without God as the central object of our love, all other persons and things in our lives that deserve their share of our love will become distorted. Ask the Holy Spirit daily to give you the strength needed to love God with all your heart and all else will fall into line. 1

THIRTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME NOVEMBER 4, 2018 CELEBRATING THE SAINTS Saint Seraphin of Montegranaro, Religious (1540-1604) Felix Rapagnano was born at Montegranaro and was the second of four children of poor but pious parents. His father was a mason. Because of their poverty, the family depended on the productivity of all its members. The eldest son, Silenzio, followed in his father s footsteps, as a mason. The slighter and less manually adept Felix was hired out to a local farmer as a shepherd. Felix enjoyed shepherding since it afforded him time for prayer. Even at an early age, Felix had an inclination toward silence, seclusion, and prayer which caused people to take notice of him in admiration. When his father died, Felix was summoned home. His brother understood that Felix lacked the skills of a mason, but hoped to use him as an unskilled laborer. All attempts proved futile. Felix could not even learn how to slake lime. He did learn, however, to put up with the physical and emotional abuse heaped upon him by his irascible brother. Inspired by the stories of the desert fathers, Felix confided to a friend his desire to enter religious life. At the friend s encouragement, Felix sought entrance into the Capuchin friars. After a year s probation, Felix received the religious name of Seraphin. Seraphin was distinguished from the first by his unaffected simplicity, mortification, and obedience as well as a great charity towards the poor. He had a special devotion to the Blessed Sacrament and to Our Lady. Although unlettered, Seraphin soon came to be sought out by secular and ecclesiastical dignitaries alike for advice. Externally, Seraphin remained much unchanged: hair always rumpled; and clumsy at manual tasks; but his holiness was recognized by many. At times discouraged by the ridicule of his Capuchin brothers, Seraphin would regain his composure and perspective through prayer. He explained, When I entered religious life I was a poor, unskilled laborer, lacking both talent and potential. I remained as I was, and this caused so many humiliations and rebukes which the evil one used as opportunities to tempt me to leave religious life and retreat to some desert, withdrawing into myself. I entrusted myself to the Lord, and one night I heard a voice coming from the tabernacle say, To serve God you must die to yourself and accept adversity, of whatever type. So I accepted them and resolved to recite a rosary for anyone who caused me trouble. Then I heard the voice from the tabernacle say, Your prayers for those who mortify you are very pleasing to me. In exchange, I am ready to grant you many graces. Saint Seraphin s feast day is celebrated on October 12 th. His tomb is in the Capuchin friary at Ascoli Piceno, Italy. 2 ALL SOULS DAY REMEMBRANCE BOOK Let us join together as a parish and remember those family members and friends who have touched our lives deeply and have now gone home to God by signing their names in our parish s Book of Life. The book is found in the lobby of the Church. These names and all the Faithful Departed will be remembered in a special way during the coming month of November. All Souls Day Remembrance envelopes are in your envelope packets for your use to remember your deceased family and friends. Additional envelopes for those who contribute on line are available on the parish bookrack. Six additional Masses are scheduled during the year where they will be remembered. Charity obligates us to pray for the souls of the faithful departed just as we would wish to be prayed for. It is still a Catholic practice to have Masses said during the year for those who have died. SEMINARIANS OF THE WEEK This week, we pray for Xavier Macfarlane, Joseph Mannarino, Joseph McCarron, and Luke McNeill. CATHOLIC GLOSSARY Seminarian: A seminarian is a man in formal studies for ordained priestly service to the Church. MARRIAGE AND FAMILY Take a trip down memory lane. Remember your first date or the first time you said, I love you to your spouse. Recall the early days of your dating and how you came to realize that you wanted to spend your lives together. Confirmation is a great opportunity to start taking their spiritual self seriously. Education can prepare you for a career, and exercise can prepare you to compete athletically, but developing your spiritual self is the real preparation for life, and Confirmation is part of that preparation. Please pray for our Confirmation students that are on retreat today, that they will always remember God s love for them, how the Holy Spirit is active in their lives and continue to be a witness to their faith in the world. REFLECTION PRAYER For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Live it: Ask God during your prayer time to start revealing to you His plan. THIRTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME NOVEMBER 4, 2018 WEEKLY MASS REMINDER The Liturgy of the Word The main part of the Liturgy of the Word is made up of the readings from Sacred Scripture together with the chants occurring between them. As for the Homily, the Profession of Faith, and the Universal Prayer, they develop and conclude it. For in the readings, as explained by the Homily, God speaks to His people, opening up to them the mystery of redemption and salvation, and offering spiritual nourishment; and Christ himself is present through His word in the midst of the faithful. By silence and by singing, the people make this divine word their own, and affirm their adherence to it by means of the Profession of Faith; finally, having been nourished by the divine word, the people pour out their petitions by means of the Universal Prayer for the needs of the whole Church and for the salvation of the whole world. from the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, 55. HEY CATHOLIC! DID YOU KNOW Did you know that many Catholics have contributed to the good of society through science? Edmund Taylor Whittaker (24 October 1873 24 March 1956) was an English mathematician who contributed widely to applied mathematics, mathematical physics, and the theory of special functions. He received the Copley Medal, the most prestigious honorary award in British science. More Catholics to come in the coming weeks BLESSING OF THE WEEK The Book of Blessings is the liturgical book used by priests and deacons to bless people or objects for religious use. If you come across a blessing you need to receive, do not be afraid to ask a priest or deacon. This week s blessing is the Blessing of a Mother before Childbirth. This blessing may be celebrated for an individual mother, particularly in the company of her family. It may also be celebrated for several mothers together, for example, in a hospital. The blessing includes the following: Receive with kindness the prayer of your servant as she asks for the birth of a healthy child. Grant that she may safely deliver a son or a daughter to be numbered among your family, to serve you in all things, and to gain eternal life. Even from the womb, we are loved! CATHOLIC CAMPAIGN FOR HUMAN DEVELOPMENT The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) is taking poverty off the map in the Diocese of Cleveland. CCHD was founded to end the cycle of poverty in America by funding organizations that help individuals help themselves. Please give to the CCHD collection Nov. 17-18. CCHD Helping People Helpves. Please give to the CCHD Collection CHURCH ETIQUETTE WITH MONSIGNOR MANNERS Monsignor Manners says: The reason we practice etiquette is to respect those around us. The Gospel is easier to share when it is presented with kindness. CHRISTIAN SPIRITUALITY CORNER The spirit of humility is sweeter than honey, and those who nourish themselves with this honey produce sweet fruit. St. Anthony of Padua 4
