In fact, they are condemnable. Putting on a show of righteousness will fool no one, and it certainly does not do the deceiver any good. Instead, we should cultivate authentic giving, like the poor widow who gave her last coins. Our gifts and our lives should be offered with humility and abandonment. If we grip tightly onto our last coin, we block God, grace, and the potential of being transformed for our greatest good. The tale of the poor widow is meant to spark a conversion of the heart. It calls us to great openness to trust God as we surrender everything of value to our merciful God. Our gospel reading underlines the necessity of each person accepting and relying on God s grace and goodness. Peace comes in every moment of conversion, of turning away from the darkness in our hearts and in the world. When we turn toward the Lord, and offer God everything, we make room for peace to break in. 1

THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME NOVEMBER 11, 2018 CELEBRATING THE SAINTS Saint Mary of Jesus Crucified, Virgin (1846-1878) Mariam Baouardy was born near Nazareth to devout Syrian Melkite Catholics. At the age of three, she lost both of her parents and went to live with her uncle. When at thirteen Mariam refused to prepare for marriage, her uncle relegated her to the place of a servant, treating her harshly. Three years passed before Mariam was able to slip away from her home. When she sought the help of a former employee of her uncle, he encouraged her to convert to Islam. Mariam s refusal drew the man s wrath. He attacked her, slashed her neck with a knife, and left her by the side of the road. A Mysterious young woman came to her, nursed her to health, and brought her to some Franciscan sisters. Mariam later said that it was the Blessed Mother. When Mariam recovered, she became a servant to a Syrian family who took her to France, where she joined an active Franciscan order. But Mariam s extraordinary prayer life prompted the sisters to send her away. The Carmelites at Pau took her in as a lay sister. She delighted in manual labor and loved to sing. In ecstatic prayer she was known to levitate to the tops of trees. She liked to call herself the little nothing. Mariam was instrumental in founding a Carmel in Bethlehem. While serving the workmen building the convent, she was injured in a fall and developed gangrene, she died at the age of thirty-three. Mariam Baouardy in religion Sister Mary of Jesus Crucified was canonized on 17 May 2015 by Pope Francis. Her feast day is August 26 th. THE GIVING TREE The giving tree will be in the gathering area of the church next weekend November 17 & 18. BLESSING OF THE WEEK The Book of Blessings is the liturgical book used by priests and deacons to bless people or objects for religious use. If you come across a blessing you need to receive, do not be afraid to ask a priest or deacon. This week s blessing is the Blessing of Altar Servers, Sacristans, Musicians and Ushers. The Church desires all the faithful to participate fully, consciously, and actively in the sacred liturgy. Within the baptized, individual members are called to participate in the liturgy by undertaking liturgical roles. This blessing is normally given by the pastor, but may be delegated to another priest or to a deacon. 4

PARMA, OHIO MARRIAGE AND FAMILY Fighting Fair Tip: Never say never or always. It may seem like your spouse always leaves the gas tank on empty, but there s always an exception that blows your argument. Be more accurate by saying often or sometimes. It stings less and creates less defensiveness. Daily Marriage Tip for November 5, 2018 from http://www.foryourmarriage.org WEEKLY MASS REMINDER The Liturgy of the Eucharist At the Last Supper Christ instituted the Paschal Sacrifice and banquet, by which the Sacrifice of the Cross is continuously made present in the Church whenever the Priest, representing Christ the Lord, carries out what the Lord himself did and handed over to his disciples to be done in his memory. For Christ took the bread and the chalice, gave thanks, broke the bread and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat and drink: this is my Body; this is the chalice of my Blood. Do this in memory of me. Hence, the Church has arranged the entire celebration of the Liturgy of the Eucharist in parts corresponding to precisely these words and actions of Christ, namely: a) At the Preparation of the Gifts, bread and wine with water are brought to the altar, the same elements, that is to say, which Christ took into his hands. b) In the Eucharistic Prayer, thanks is given to God for the whole work of salvation, and the offerings become the Body and Blood of Christ. c) Through the fraction and through Communion, the faithful, though many, receive from the one bread the Lord s Body and from the one chalice the Lord s Blood in the same way that the Apostles received them from the hands of Christ himself. from the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, 72. CATHOLIC GLOSSARY Postulant: A postulant is a candidate for a religious order or society during the first few months of training. 5
