Each year on this feast we are asked to recall this great mystery of community and friendship. Both of these gifts in our own lives are a reflection of the very nature of the Trinity, three Persons, one God, each giving and receiving love from the other. The relationship among the members of the Trinity is the most intimate, most intense, the most loving that anyone could possibly imagine. The mystery of our God being One and yet a Community of Persons cannot be understood, yet in our own lives, in an intuitive way, we know that this must be true. Our own deepest need for love and friendship reveals this to us. We, who are made in the image of God, are likewise called to love and be loved. This means that the work of building community and friendship is a sacred work for us. To love is the primary way we grow in God s own image. If we fully understand this, then a balance should be gained in our lives, putting work, gaining possessions, and achieving notoriety in its proper place a far distant second to our vocation to love. 1

THE MOST HOLY TRINITY JUNE 11, 2017 CELEBRATING THE SAINTS Saint James the Greater, Apostle (1 st Century) Among the first disciples that Jesus called were the brothers, James and John, the sons of thunder (probably referring initially to their temperament). They were mending their nets with their father, Zebedee, on the shore of the Sea of Galilee when Jesus passed by. When Jesus spoke to them, Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men, they responded immediately, leaving their nets and following Jesus (Mt. 4:19-20). With Peter, and sometimes Andrew, James and John made up a sort of inner circle among the disciples. James witnessed the glory of the Lord in His Transfiguration, but also His agonized prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane as He prepared to lay down His life: My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet, not as I will, but as you will (Mt 26:39). James and John were the two who asked Jesus, Grant that in your glory we may sit one at your right and the other at your left (Mk 10:37). Although in Matthew s Gospel, Matthew has their mother doing the asking. But, in imitation of his Lord, James eventually strove for a different sort of glory. All of the Apostles, but his brother John, are presumed to have died martyrs deaths. In James case, the sacrifice is certain. The author of the Acts of the Apostles tells us simply, King Herod laid hands upon some members of the church to harm them. He had James, the brother of John, killed by the sword (Acts 12:1-2). Saint James feast is celebrated on July 25 th. BECOMING CATHOLIC If you know someone who is thinking about becoming Catholic or has questions about the Catholic faith, invite them to come to an information night about the RCIA process. The meeting will take place on Monday June 26, 2017 at 7:00 PM in the Hospitality Room. God desires every human person to know his love and mercy. Contact Fr. Peter at the rectory or by email frpeter@stanthonypaduaparma.org if you have any questions. MARRIAGE AND FAMILY The experience of love in families is a perennial source of strength for the life of the Church. The unitive end of marriage is a constant summons to make this love grow and deepen. Through their union in love, the couple experiences the beauty of fatherhood and motherhood, and shares plans, trials, expectations and concerns; they learn care for one another and mutual forgiveness. In this love, they celebrate their happy moments and support each other in the difficult passages of their life together... The beauty of this mutual, gratuitous gift, the joy which comes from a life that is born and the loving care of all family members from toddlers to seniors are just a few of the fruits which make the response to the vocation of the family unique and irreplaceable, both for the Church and for society as a whole. Pope Francis, The Joy of Love, 88. FATHER S DAY MASS CARDS Father s Day Mass Cards will be sold after most Masses this weekend, June 10/11. RELIGIOUS ORDER OF THE WEEK Order: The Order of St. Augustine (OSA) aka The Augustinians Origin: The Order of Saint Augustine was founded in 1244 in Italy when several communities of hermits living in the region of Tuscany came together to ask Pope Innocent IV that they be united under one common Rule of life and one Superior General like other Orders that had recently been founded. The Pope gave them the Rule of Saint Augustine. Charism: The foundation and characteristic of Augustinian life is life in common, in which friars seek to construct a path that is directed to God in service to others. Website: http://www.augustinian.org CATHOLIC GLOSSARY Pall: A small linen cloth used to cover the chalice. HEY CATHOLIC DID YOU KNOW... Did you know that Tribunal work is free? Bishop Lennon adjusted the diocesan budget a few years ago so that all those who needed Decrees of Invalidity (commonly called annulments) could have access at no cost. The People of God deserve the best, and the bishop did his best to make that happen. LADIES GUILD MEETING Tired of these rainy, gray days we have been having? Well come join us on Tuesday, June 13th at 6:00 PM in the hospitality room and we will provide gaiety and sunshine indoors with our kick off to summer cookout! No need to RSVP, just arrive hungry and be prepared for a fun, surprise-filled evening! P.S. - think positive : the calendar states that summer solstice returns on June 21st! SLOVAK PICNIC The Slovak Radio Club will hold a Slovak picnic on Sunday, June, 25, 2017 from 12 8 PM at the Slovak Sokal Camp 20169 Royalwood Rd., Broadview Hts., Ohio 44147. Join us for Slovak food, beer-pivo, pastries and dancing. Entertainment will be provided by the Wayne Tomsic Band. Admission is $4.00. For information contact Milan Kobulsky (330) 239-2256. WEEKLY MASS REMINDER The Universal Prayer, or the Prayer of the Faithful, is when we present to God our needs. Usually, we pray for the needs of the Church, for public authorities and the salvation of the whole world, for those burdened by any kind of difficulty, for the local community. As we pray for these, make sure to share with God your needs in the silence of your hearts as well. POPE FRANCIS REQUESTS: TAKE THE YOUTH SURVEY! The Catholic bishops of the world are planning to meet in October 2018 for the 15th Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops. The theme of this gathering is Youth, Faith and Vocational Discernment. In preparation for this major synod on youth, Pope Francis wants to gather input from the Catholic faithful. Consequently, the Diocese of Cleveland has made available a survey questionnaire to gather information on the current state of the young in our diocese that will be included as part of the pre-synod discernment document. The survey can be found on the diocesan home page, www.dioceseofcleveland.org. All are invited and encouraged to participate by taking this short survey. The bishops of the United States pray that the results of this survey will help them more fully understand the experience of young people in our Church and in our country -- their hopes, dreams, fears and struggles -- so that the synod may bear fruit in offering more insight and direction to our ministry with young people. 5
