The month of August marks an interlude in the long series of passages from Mark s Gospel during the Pentecost season. The Gospels for the first three Sundays are taken from John 6 - The Bread of Life chapter. August 26 will be a significant day in the life of our parish. On that day, we will gather together with our sisters and brothers of St. John and St. Paul to commemorate and celebrate the 50 th Anniversary of our Wyneken School. Certainly education stands at the center of our life together in our congregation. For 180 years the instruction of God s people and especially the youth has been an integral part of our life and work. It is essential as we teach and model the faith. One of Martin Luther s more famous quotes is When schools flourish, all flourishes. Luther urged that the Scriptures be the primary text in the schools at every level. His oft-quoted and very important statement reads, I would advise no one to send his child where the Holy Scriptures are not supreme. Every institution that does not unceasingly pursue the study of God s word becomes corrupt. He then further reminds us that the freedom to provide sound Christian schooling is the very freedom of the Gospel itself. We have been blessed by the ministry of our Wyneken Memorial Lutheran School. It is the church s school. May the Lord continue to bless this important work of our parish ministry. Come join us August 26 for this celebration event. This month of August will be a time of transition in our neighborhood. Pastor Christopher Maronde will be installed at St. John Lutheran Church, Bingen on Sunday, August 5, as Associate Pastor. Rev. Dr. Daniel Brege will be transitioning to the office of District President during the month of August. He will remain as Associate Pastor at St. Paul yet his responsibility in the parish will be extremely limited as the duties of the District President are immense. Presently St. Paul is forming a call committee and will be issuing a call for a Senior Pastor in the near future. On September 9, Rev. Dr. Brege will be installed as President of our District while Pastor Brock will be installed as 4 th Vice President of our District. An invitation for this event can be found later in this newsletter. If attending the reception, an RSVP to church@zionfw.org is needed by August 30. The Indiana District covers the entire state of Indiana and the northern third of the state of Kentucky. It consists of 235 parishes, 53 pre-schools, 50 elementary schools, and three parochial high schools. There are an estimated 102,000 persons which make up our Indiana District. Past presidents of our district include the following pastors: Rev. Edgar C. Rakow, Rev. Elwood H. Zimmermann, Rev. Reuben Garber, Rev. Timothy E. Sims, *Pastor Sims served Emmanuel New Haven. He confirmed, ordained, and installed Pastor Dahling Rev. Daniel P. May, *Pastor May served as Pastor at St. Peter in Ft. Wayne, Tamara Dahling s home parish With Our Members Congratulations to Brett & Janine (Shane) Conrad on the birth of their second daughter, Mia Elizabeth. 5 As of July 16, we raised $1, for the Bottles of Hope fundraiser for The Hope Clinic. There are still 13 baby bottles out. If you have one, please bring it to church as soon as possible. There is a small tote in the Gathering Area for you to place the bottle. A thank you note from The Hope Clinic reads in part Thank you for hosting a baby bottle campaign for The Hope Clinic.. Your support is greatly appreciated! The Seasoned Walther Leaguers invite you to join them for an afternoon of cards and Christian fellowship on Tuesday, August 14, at 12:30 p.m. in the Gathering Area. Please bring a snack to share! Memorial We have received a memorial in loving memory of Ruth Hartmann from Bernice Berning for our Building/Expansion Fund. College Addresses Whether your child is heading to college for the first time or is completing their senior year, we need your help. If you could send their campus address (or address for their off-campus apartment) to the church office (churchoffice@zionfriedheim.org), it would be much appreciated. Even if they have the same address as last year, drop a short note letting us know that. An address would also be helpful. Besides sending out the newsletter, the LWML will be sending a gift card to those away at college sometime in October and the addresses will be needed for that as well. Your help is needed! We realize that many may have dropped their land line and are just using their cell phones. If you are one of those and you have not contacted the church office with your updated information, would you please do so? We would like to have the information in the directory as accurate as possible. If you don t want your cell number listed in the directory, let us know. We would still like to have this information in the office. In addition, any address or physical address changes would also be appreciated. Thank you for your help! Sunday School It won t be long and Sunday School will begin (September 9 is Rally Day, the first day of Sunday School). The majority of the staff is remaining from last year (thank you all!) but if we could have a list of individuals willing to sub that would be very beneficial. If you don t want to teach but would like to lend a hand with a class (especially the younger students) that is also beneficial. In addition, an additional teacher for the 7 th & 8 th graders is needed to fill in for those times when vacation plans take him out of town. If interested, please contact Angie Lichtle ( or ). Open House The family of Bernice Berning invites you to share in the celebration of Bernice s 90 th birthday. Please come to the Gathering Area on Sunday, August 26, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. for an Open House in her honor. Thanks to all those who made contributions of "seed money" to the Wyneken Matching account. With contributions through Sunday, July 22, the account has $2,864 in eligible contributions and $5,780 in matching funds. We now have enough matching money to support an additional $14,477 in "regular" contributions. We should be OK with no additional seed money for the next couple of months. Meeting Plans for Fellowship Hall Updated floor and elevation plans for the new Fellowship Hall are now available. If you want to review these plans, please see Dennis Werling following a Sunday morning worship service. Another opportunity to view the plans takes Page 5 of 8

6 place on Sunday, August 5. You are invited to come to church at 6:30 p.m. to look at the plans, ask questions, or share concerns. We have had 18 pastors, not including vacancy pastors, who have served the people of God at Friedheim. This month we will hear about the five remaining ministers. On January 18, 1971, Pastor Ronald Schultz was called to serve Friedheim. He resigned on May 8, The congregation offered prayers for his protection, helping with his personal problems, and granting a speedy return into the ministry of the church. At this time, the congregation also voted to call a bilingual pastor. Continuing a German service was deemed to be of high importance. Pastor Baldwin Camin was issued a call on July 11, He was serving a congregation in Edson, Alberta Canada. He was installed on September 10, Under Pastor Camin s leadership, the current structure of the congregation s administration was set in place. The practice of personal announcement for communion was followed along with the use of communion announcement cards. Pastor Camin received a peaceful release on August 16, 1976 so he could serve the people of God at Messiah Lutheran church in Marysville, Washington. After two calls were returned, Pastor Eric Reinhold was called to serve our congregation on January 23, Pastor Reinhold was an emigrant from South America and received his colloquy from the Fort Wayne Seminary in Pastor Reinhold was installed in the spring of While he was at Friedheim, the organ was moved from the front of the church to the rear balcony (July 1978). In October 1978 Pastor Reinhold received a call to serve Peace Lutheran Church in Galena Park, Texas. He was granted a peaceful release effective November 15, On April 27, 1980 Pastor Marvin Hinkle was called to serve at Friedheim. During this long absence, Dr. Otto Stahlke served as our interim ministry. Pastor Hinkle had been a teacher at Concordia Lutheran High School in Ft. Wayne and received his colloquy from the Ft. Wayne Seminary on December 31, Pastor Hinkle was installed on July 13, German services were still held with Dr. Stahlke preaching and Pastor Hinkle leading the altar service. German services were discontinued in the fall of Pastor Hinkle accepted a call to St. James Lutheran Church in Logansport and preached his farewell sermon on October 26, On January 18, 1987 Pastor Daniel Dahling was called to Friedheim. He was installed on March 23, 1987 and remains at Friedheim today 31 years later! During his tenure, changes have happened. The church was rededicated for its 150 th anniversary in 1988 and women were granted voting privileges and could serve on Council in In 1994 handicap access was made to the church and in 1997 the present parsonage was remodeled. The Cornfusion Corn Maze kept the congregation busy and had a successful three-year run. The church roof was replaced in 2000, an addition to Wyneken Memorial Lutheran School was done in 2002 and the Gathering space (with restrooms) was added to the church in At present, we are looking at beginning construction on a new Parish Hall.
