Sin often is described as separation from God. Sin s effect is what Jesus experienced on the cross when He cried, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me (Matthew 27:46 NIV). It s not hard to imagine similar cries in New York, Washington, and the aisles of four jetliners. For a brief moment in the scheme of eternity, thousands of people witnessed what sin does seemingly at its worst. Thank God that He spared us an eternity of such separation! (Romans 8:38-39). Horrible and terrible as those events were, the Gospel remains the Gospel. It s still the Good News, the Best News, especially when we see it in light of just how dark sin can be. The aftermath of disaster may leave us dizzy with grief and a nagging sense of loss. But we believers are left with something far better: We re left with the aftermath of the cross! As one first grade teacher (my wife) explained to her non-theological first grade bunch of believers, Jesus was very busy last Tuesday. He welcomed many new people to heaven. May we be as satisfied as first graders with such expressions of faith (Luke 18:16-17). Not only do we remember the tragedy that was September 11, 2001, but we also remember recent events that have happened in Florida and Texas. Even through tragedy or despair, we are confident that the Gospel remains the Gospel. Nothing can take away the fact that Christ has shed his blood on the cross, defeated Satan, and rose from the dead three days later so that we may have hope, forgiveness, and salvation. 9-MONTH TUITION PLAN AVAILBLE ON FACTS TUITION - DEADLINE SEPT 20 For families who would like to pay their tuition monthly, you have the option of selecting a 9-month payment plan (September-May). 4 PASTOR S CORNER Meet Pastor Teasdale, Martini Lutheran Church Hi! My name is Pastor Jim Teasdale and I'm the Pastor at Martini Lutheran Church. I am married to my wife, Sue Teasdale. We met in college and were married November 29, God has given us four sons, Joshua, Jeremy, Zechary, and Jacob. Joshua is not married but his three younger brothers are married. Jeremy's wife, Carla is expecting a baby girl. They are very excited and so is our family. Zechary married his wife, Darcy this past May. They do not have any children ---- yet. Jacob and his wife, Kasi have two children, a girl named Annabelle, and a boy named Desmond. Mrs. Teasdale and I thank God for our family. They are very special to us. When I am not working I love to fish. This past July I went with my brother Ray to Alaska and we caught King Salmon and Halibut. But I love to fish the lakes in northern Indiana and also Lake Erie. Fishing is my favorite activity when I'm not working. I also enjoy playing chess, watching television, and reading books. On July 26, 1983, I was ordained a Pastor in the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. That was 34 years ago. I love being a Pastor even more than I love fishing. When I was 10 years old I left Church with my Mom and sister and brothers wanting to be a Pastor. Some difficulties entered my life and I did not respond very well to them. So I thought God did not want me to be a Pastor. I even left the Church for several years. One night I was beaten up by a troubled Vietnam Veteran. I did not know him, but he frightened me so much I started practicing karate which was taught at my Church and I started going to Church again. Since God brought me back to Church through karate, I really wanted to learn karate. So I practiced karate in Yokohama, Japan for 6 months. I did not think God wanted me to be a Pastor so I hoped to make karate a career, but I did not make it a career. Instead I went to Concordia University, Ann Arbor, Michigan. During my second year at Concordia, I learned only God's love for us in Christ qualifies men to become Pastors. When I learned God's forgiving love in Christ qualifies a man to serve as a Pastor - I felt such great joy - I wanted to share this forgiveness as a way of life. Three days later I began studying to be a Pastor. To this day, I believe the most important thing I can do with my life is help other people, including you, know God loves you and forgives you in Christ. Receiving forgiveness in Christ is the most important thing any of us can do with our lives. For this reason going to Church is very, very important. We receive forgiveness from God every time we ask Him to forgive us but God has created Church to make sure His forgiveness is given to us through his Son Jesus Christ. Going to Church is so helpful to us because during Church God is with us, forgiving us, teaching us, and strengthening our faith. Going to Church is also important to our family. Family members love each other but sometimes we hurt each other. When we hurt each other we feel ashamed and guilty. Sometimes we feel like separating ourselves from family members. This feeling is so strong it motivates many people to stop going to Church. See why forgiveness is so important and helpful? Since God forgives you, you need not feel ashamed and guilty or separate yourself from your family or Church. Since we all hurt people we all need forgiveness and none of us should reject anyone. Just after Jesus was crucified on His cross He prayed, "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. (Luke 23:34)" Jesus amazes me! He feels forgiveness toward the very people who crucified Him. Forgiving you and your family and your classmates is so important to Jesus He suffered on the cross - in our place -to earn forgiveness for us. Now we live as forgiven people and we commit ourselves to forgiving each other. Well, I should stop now, but before I do, let me invite you to share any questions you might have. You may share your questions with me or the Pastors at Emanuel or Saint Paul. We all love you and rejoice that we serve you.
