1 Glad Tidings September 2017 Volume 2017 Issue 8rev ST. DAVID S EPISCOPAL CHURCH - WASHINGTON, DC From the Desk of Stuart A. Kenworthy Dear Faithful and Friends of St David s Church, I write to you in early August so by the time you get this it will be a time of transitioning towards the end of summer and the eventual arrival of autumn. I say eventual arrival because as far as the weather, to this native upper Midwesterner, it does not really feel like autumn here in Washington until sometime well into October. Nevertheless, as we approach the widely recognized end of summer with the arrival of Labor Day, welcome back from all the places you have been these last several months. And welcome back to St David s Church to all who have been away some or all of the time. By the time you receive this, the vestry will have likely come to the ending stage in selecting your new rector. This is an exciting time for St David s Church and the future before us---which is finally all in God s hands. Our deepest thanks go to all on the Rector s Search Committee and the Vestry who have all been so attentive, hard-working, and faithful in this most important endeavor. Our prayers continue for them in this time of final decision. Let us all focus on one thing right now and that is resolving to join together on Sunday, September 10 th at the service. We are suspending the 8:00 am service that day in hopes of having the entire St David s parish family come together at the 10:00am service to begin a new year and share with one another a festive reception following. Call it an urban picnic. After church we will gather outside in front of the church as we have all summer or in the undercroft depending on the weather and the number of persons present. It is time to come back together as a parish family: One that seems poised to grow in faith, mission, formation, and strength in the near term years. It has been such a privilege and joy to be counted a part of this wonderful parish church these last 10 months. Also on that Homecoming Sunday there will signups for Sunday School and a chance for new people to meet the dedicated volunteer teachers who each week help bring these young people to know about and embrace our Christian faith. It is the greatest gift they could ever receive. I am hoping other representatives from the many other ministries of the parish will also be present to hear of your interest and answer any questions you might have about becoming more involved. This includes the Altar and Flower Guilds, Outreach Ministries, Sunday School, Hospitality, Stewardship Committee, and numerous others. So, please mark your calendars, bring something to share at this potluck picnic, and let s celebrate the life, faith and friendship we share at St. David s Church. Blessings and peace to all, The Rev. Stuart A. Kenworthy Interim Rector INSIDE Future of St. David s Activities Calendar 2 & 4 Lay Ministry Schedules 3 & 5 Notices 6 Announcements 7 Worship Schedule & Special Events 8
2 WARDENS REPORT Dear Fellow St. David s Parishioners: There is much to report since the last Glad Tidings was published in June. We continue to be blessed by the transitional leadership provided by our Interim Rector Stuart Kenworthy. Stuart returns to us soon after Labor Day from a well-earned working vacation. In his three-week absence, we have been well-served by the Supply Ministry of the Reverend Susan Thon. Summer services have been well-attended and have been enhanced by a new St. David s tradition an outdoor coffee and refreshments gathering near our front steps just after the 10:00 service. Weather and volunteers permitting, we hope to continue this tradition well into autumn. The Rector Search Committee completed its work ahead of schedule at the end of June and delivered a short list of worthy final candidates to the vestry. Your vestry has held lengthy inperson interviews and dinners with the finalists and their spouses. Reference checks have been completed. Site visits to observe the candidates in action have been conducted. The vestry is preparing to make an announcement later this month. If all goes as planned, our new rector should be with us before the end of the year. Our Rector Search Committee, led by Alex Shockey and Chet Speed, deserve our thanks and appreciation for a job well done. The Capital Campaign remains open until the end of 2018 and continues to receive past pledge payments as well as new contributions. Many important projects have been advanced and/or completed this summer thanks to the Capital Campaign. Of particular note is the stained-glass window restoration and cleaning which was completed in July. Also, an engineering inspection and report outlining the path forward for the restoration of our iconic bell tower has been performed. The bell tower restoration is scheduled for early this fall. A team of trusted architects and construction contractors has developed a plan to renovate our parish house. Finally, an engineering firm has been retained to conduct an in-depth analysis of the causes and potential solutions to our church s groundwater management challenges that periodically dampen the undercroft. Please make a special effort to attend the 10:00 service on September 10th followed by our Parish Homecoming Picnic. Registration for Sunday School and for many of the parish ministries and committees will be conducted during the picnic. Volunteers are needed to supply and support the picnic. Please contact the church office (stdavids@rcn.com) or Chip Nottingham (chipnottingham@verizon.net) for details. On a more somber note, the summer of 2017 saw the passing of two very special parishioners, Peggy Canby and Chloe Stifel. Peggy and Chloe combined to give more than 100 years of faithful service and support to the St. David s community. Peggy s memorial service was held at St. David s on June 10th and Chloe will be memorialized at St. David s on September 9 th at 2
3 11:00 AM. Both families have asked that gifts in memory of Peggy and Chloe be made to St. David s. Please keep Peggy and Chloe and their families in your prayers. As we prepare for the busy fall season at St. David s, it is a good time to take a moment to reflect on our many blessings and to rededicate ourselves to our shared mission in service to Christ. We look forward to seeing you at church soon. As always, do not hesitate to contact us with questions, suggestions or concerns. Faithfully Yours, Stephen Sears Senior Warden struxtun@aol.com Chip Nottingham Junior Warden chipnottingham@verizon.net Inspection of the Bell Tower - Completed June 29-30, 2017 HURRICANE HARVEY RELIEF EFFORT: As the St. David's parish community prays for the people of southeastern Texas as they endure an ongoing devastating flood disaster, please consider sending support via the Episcopal Relief and Development Fund Alternatively, checks and cash marked for Hurricane Harvey can be given or sent to our parish for forwarding to the relief effort. Thank you for your prayers and consideration. 3
