2 Page 2 Valley of Nashua Scottish Rite News Supreme Council Releases 22 and 24 Videos In its continued work to make Scottish Rite Inspirational, Convenient, and Enjoyable, the Supreme Council has permitted screen presentations of the 22, Prince of Libanus, and 24, Brother of the Forest by releasing them on video. The videos will give Valleys more choices in how to hold their Reunions. Many Valleys are struggling. Smaller Valleys may not have performed certain degrees in years, from a lack of members to fill all the parts for a degree with a large cast (the 17 calls for a cast of about 50 members). Large Valleys that built cathedrals when membership was at its peak, now face selling those buildings and finding new locations and ways to hold reunions, as the cost of keeping them for a few Reunions each year is prohibitive. And still other Valleys have been using all their resources to put on one or two degrees beyond those previously required, such as the 14 and 18. By replacing one degree with a screen presentation, small Valleys could use their members to fill a larger-cast degree; larger Valleys could hold some Reunions in a hall without a stage. And every Valley could present degrees more often, by holding traditional Reunions, and adding screen presentations at other times, such as a Stated Rendezvous, or as part of a program with a guest speaker. No Valley is required to use the videos, but by having them, Valley officers are free to plan Reunions without a that s how we ve always done it mindset. It drives all of us to ask, How can we make our Reunions better for our members and for Scottish Rite? We welcome your thoughts. Why Did You Join Scottish Rite? Was it a desire to learn more about Freemasonry? Was it for the camaraderie and the fellowship? Was it for the degrees? For our charitable work? What caused you to join Scottish Rite? The Valley Membership Committee wants to know three things: 1. What prompted you to join Scottish Rite? 2. Is Scottish Rite providing it to you? 3. If so, is Scottish Rite doing a good job providing it? The Membership Committee has been tasked with improving retention of existing members, as well as attracting new ones. That means asking what makes your Scottish Rite Membership valuable to you. You may have seen the Sovereign Grand Commander s message in the May issue of The Northern Light. He writes about a Gallup Poll done in the Valley of Chicago in the mid-1990 s which asked, What do you think is the greatest strength of the Scottish Rite Valley of Chicago? Their top three answers were Brotherhood/camaraderie, Don t know, and It s members/people. What answers would we get today? If we had the same ones, we d need to improve our message about Scottish Rite not only to potential members, but to current members, as well. And the answers wouldn t necessarily mean our strengths match what you want from us. And just because they re a strength, wouldn t mean we re focusing our energy on them. Help us know what we need to do for you. Please take three minutes to share your thoughts. Go to At the bottom of the page, click on Contact Us. You needn t give your name or contact information, unless you d like a response. Put Why I Joined in the name field; tab down to message, and type the number 1, followed by the reason you joined; then 2, and either Yes or No for whether your getting what you wanted out of being a Scottish Rite member; and then 3, and a letter grade (A,B,C,D, or F) for how well you feel the Valley is doing. That s it. (Of course, if you want to elaborate and write more, feel free.) Called from Labor In Memorium David West Eldridge Matt C Williamson Robert C Stewart Sr. Robert Parr Mason Jr. George M West Clifford E Spinney Clarence E Robinson Asa H Knowles Jr. Charles W Tilton Jr. John Brown III, MSA Walter Frederick Gosse Nicholas J Papatones William T Jackson Frank S Langford Roy Fillmore Leach Jr. Alfred H Ward Fred W Lightell Eugene A Slusser Lawrence E Chayer This is your Scottish Rite.
