4 Looking Back: Enoch T. Carson and the Rose Croix Illustrious Brother Enoch T. Carson is a man of great stature in Scottish Rite History. He is considered the Father of Scottish Rite Masonry in Ohio in more than one Grand Lodge proceeding, and his service to the Valley of Cincinnati and the State of Ohio are well-documented. At the end of the 19th Century the Enoch T. Carson Class received their 32nd Degree along with Brass medals stamped with his name and face, as a reminder of a lifetime of work. Carson s contributions to the Valley of Cincinnati include being Past Sovereign Prince as well as founder and the longest-serving Commander-in-Chief of The Ohio Consistory. Illustrious Brother Carson is also the father of the Rose Croix ritual as we know it now. In 1870 Carson, along with five other members of the Committee on rituals reported back to the Supreme Council that they had reviewed and revised the degrees of Knight of the East and West as well as Sovereign Prince of Rose Croix (today known as Knight of Rose Croix, HRDM). The Supreme Council accepted these revisions and at the following Supreme Council meeting adopted them. Those revisions are the basis of the Rose Croix Degrees used by the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction today. In fact, the first time the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction s revised versions of the Rose Croix Rituals were ever exemplified for the Supreme Council, they were performed by the Illustrious members of The Valley of Cincinnati. Steel City Invitational November 16, 17 & 18, 2018 in the Valley of Pittsburgh Road Trip Last November the Valley of Cincinnati held the inaugural Queen City Invitational. 7 fall kick-off By Robert W. Dumford, 33 The Valley of Cincinnati had a great evening for the annual Fall Kick-Off on September 13, We returned to CUB WORLD at Camp Friedlander. The Kick-Off is a time when we call the labors of the Scottish Rite back to action after enjoying the break for Summer. This event was known as the Class Builder s Picnic for many years and was only open to members who had signed a petition for a new AASR member in the previous year. This event has evolved into a stag picnic event open to all members, Blue Lodge Masons and future Masons. One of the highlights of the picnic is the Sixth District Scottish Rite Club s almost famous Corn-on-the-Cob. This year a Stated Meeting was held in conjunction with the event giving members who haven t attended one before the opportunity to see what happens and find out what s going on in the Valley. Several members joined with the Valley Officers for this meeting. Following the meeting, a short play called For Freedom which was written by Illustrious John M. Cutter, 33, Past Commanderin-Chief of Ohio Consistory, was presented by the Ohio Master Travelers. The play takes us back to a time when Scotland was in turmoil and was at war with England. The decisions of leadership, service and allegiance to your cause are examined for the benefit of a nation. The Ohio Master Travelers are a group of Masons who host Scottish Masons and in return travel to Scotland to perform Ohio s Blue Lodge Degrees. The cast of four included members of the Valley of Cincinnati who are OMT s and will be traveling to Scotland in April of The players were: Robert Dumford, 33 as The Earl of Strathearn, Jeff Root as John Comyn, John Lasonczyk as Robert the Bruce and Ernie Brown as William Wallace. Everyone enjoyed the presentation that took place in the court yard of the Castle building at Cub World. Then we retired to dinner at the Big Boy shelter house where we enjoyed fried chicken, green beans, mashed potatoes, biscuits and corn-on-the-cob. After the conclusion, we all headed safely home ready to start the Masonic year.! Photo s by: Terrence Alexander, 32º For Freedom by Illustrious John M. Cutter, 33
