4 MASONIC RESUME of Robert M. Porter Robert Macdonald Porter, Jr. was born in Parkersburg, WV on November 30, 1959, the son of Robert and Helen (Huntington) Porter. Moving to Concord, NH in 1964, he attended public schools in Concord and Penacook, and graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a B.A. in science with a chemistry concentration and a minor in chemical engineering. Married to his wife Judy since 1989, they live in Nashua, NH. Bob has had a long career in the hospitality industry, serving in 2005 as the Chairman of the New Hampshire Lodging and Restaurant Association. After working in the business sector, Bob transitioned to non-profits, and now works for New Hampshire Consistory in Nashua. Bob was Initiated on April 24, 2002, Passed on May 29, 2002 and Raised a Master Mason on October 9, 2002 in Rising Sun Lodge No. 39 F&AM in Nashua, NH, serving as Worshipful Master in 2011 and He received the Major General John Sullivan Distinguished Service Medal in Bob was Exalted a Royal Arch Mason in Meridian Sun Chapter No. 9 of Royal Arch Masons in Nashua on January 29, He was elected as High Priest in Greeted a Cryptic Mason in Israel Hunt Council No. 8 on February 26, 2004, he served as Illustrious Master in 2012 and He was honored with the Thrice Illustrious Master Degree in Bob was Knighted in St. George Commandery No. 8 on May 29, 2004, and served as its Commander from 2009 to He currently serves as its Prior. Bob was appointed Grand Sword Bearer of the Grand Commandery of New Hampshire in 2009 by R.E. Robert D. Steel. He became a member of the Past Commanders Association in 2011, where he serves as the Vice-President. Bob is also a member of Scenic Council No. 37 of Knight Masons. He was elected a member of Profile York Rite College No. 100 of Concord in 2012 where he serves as Marshal. He was elected a member of Granite State Conclave, Order of the Red Cross of Constantine in Bob joined the Northern Jurisdiction of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite in the Valley of Nashua in October of 2002, where he served as Sovereign Prince of Oriental Council, Princes of Jerusalem in 2010 and He currently is Junior Warden of St. George Chapter of Rose Croix, and Valley Secretary of all four Scottish Rite Bodies in the Valley. Bob received the Thirty-third Degree in Bob joined Bektash Shriners in He is a member of Pilgrim Chapter No. 55, Order of the Eastern Star in Nashua, where he served as Patron. He is currently a member of the Finance Committee. Bob has also served on the Finance Committee of the Grand Chapter of New Hampshire, O.E.S. He is also a member and in the progressive line of Anniversary Lodge of Research No. 175, of Portsmouth, NH. 3

Langlois The Grand Commandery was declared open by the R.E. Grand Commander, SK R. Bradley Alderfer for the purpose of holding its Annual Business Conclave at 1:00 p.m. The Flag Ceremony was observed followed by the RE Grand Commander welcoming all for attending. 9 REPORT OF THE DEPUTY GRAND COMMANDER To: R. Bradley Alderfer, Right Eminent Grand Commander, Officers, and Sir Knights of the Grand Commandery of New Hampshire Date: April 5, 2014 It has been an honor and privilege to serve the Grand Commandery of New Hampshire this past year. The following is my report for the years 2013 and June 10, 2013 I attended the Stated Conclave of St. George Commandery No. 8 in Nashua, where I spoke about the Grand Commandery s Annual Business Meeting and Annual Conclave, as well as upcoming events. June 23, 2013 I attended the St. John s Day Service at Cathedral of the Pines in Rindge, where I led members of Commanderies from both New Hampshire and Massachusetts in escorting our Masonic Brethren to and from the service. July 5, 2013 I attended the Annual New Hampshire Grand Assembly of the International Order of Rainbow for Girls held in Nashua, NH. September 6-7, 2013 held in Albany, NY. I attended the Northeastern York Rite Department & Regional Conference September 9, 2013 I attended the Stated Conclave of St. George Commandery No. 8 in Nashua, where I spoke about the Northeastern Department Conference. October 18-19, 2013 I attended the York Rite Unity Banquet and Annual Conclave of the Grand Commandery, Knights Templar of Massachusetts and Rhode Island. November 1, 2013 I forwarded electronic copies of the first eighty-one pages of the Grand Encampment s Manual of Knights Templar Tactics to the Grand Commandery line officers. November 2, 2013 I attended the Grand Commandery line officers meeting in Penacook, NH. December 9, 2013 I attended the Stated Conclave of St. George Commandery No. 8 in Nashua, where I spoke about the upcoming Christmas Observance. 8

10 December 22, 2013 I participated in the Grand Commandery Christmas Observance held at the Masonic Temple in Manchester, NH. January 25, 2014 I participated in the Grand Commandery s tactics rehearsal held in Exeter, NH in preparation for the full-form opening on March 8 in Manchester. February 1, 2014 I attended the Joint Commandery Inspection of Mt. Horeb Commandery, No. 3; North Star-St. Gerard Commandery, No. 4; and Sullivan-Hugh de Payens Commandery No. 6 in Tilton, NH, where I was the ranking Visiting Officer. Sir Knight Paul M. Leary, Commander of No. Star-St. Gerard Commandery did the work of the Commander up until the fourth libation. Sir Knight Andy M. Lord, Commander of Sullivan-Hugh de Payens Commandery, did the remainder of the work through the knighting, as well as the investment of the sword; Sir Knight Scott M. Ayen gave the Attributes; Sir Knight Dennis A Sheridan, PGC, of North Star-St. Gerard Commandery, explained the Banners; and Sir Knight Leary gave the Flag Lecture. Following the Order, Sir Knight Leary called upon me for my remarks. I called upon the Inspector General, Robert L. Sutherland, Jr., PGC, for his remarks on the work done, and then upon Sir Knight Roger A. Douillette, Sr. to speak on the Knights Templar Eye Foundation. I then offered the warm fraternal greetings of the Grand Commandery of Knights Templar of New Hampshire; of its Grand Commander, R. Bradley Alderfer; and of my own. I congratulated the Commanderies for the work done; congratulated the Candidates for their achieving their knighthood, letting them know they had received a fine degree; and recognized not only the attendance, but also the participation of the officers of the Grand Commandery at the Inspection. February 15, 2014 I represented the Grand Commandery of New Hampshire at the Stated Assembly of Profile York Rite College No. 100 in Portsmouth, NH. February 23, 2014 I attended a meeting of the Jurisprudence Committee in Tilton, NH at the invitation of the Chairman. March 8, 2014 I participated in the Grand Commandery s tactics presentation of the full-form opening in Manchester, NH, doing the work of the Commander. Afterwards, I presided over the Annual Meeting and work of the Past Commanders Association. March 10, 2014 I attended the Stated Conclave of St. George Commandery No. 8 in Nashua, at which I installed their newly elected and appointed officers. March 22, 2014 I attended the Joint Commandery Inspection of Trinity Commandery, No. 1 and St. George Commandery No. 8 in Manchester, NH, where I took the position of Commander for the Order of the Temple, giving the Explanatory Lecture. I also did the work of the Junior Warden for the first of the two Candidates. March 29, 2014 I attended the ceremony for the Charter presentation to Upper Valley Chapter of DeMolay, where I led a detail of six Sir Knights for the reception of the officers of Upper 9

11 Valley Chapter and of New Hampshire DeMolay, who were escorted under an arch of steel by the Grand Commander and Northeastern Department Commander, respectively. April 5, 2014 I was received at the start of the Annual Conclave of the Grand Commandery of Connecticut in Rocky Hill, CT, which I was able to only briefly attend. April 5, 2014 I attended the Joint Commandery Inspection of DeWitt Clinton Commandery, No. 2 and Palestine Commandery No. 11 in Portsmouth, NH. April 19, 2014 I plan to be in attendance at the Business Meeting of this Grand Commandery on April 19 in Tilton, NH. April 26, 2014 I will represent the Grand Commandery on behalf of the Grand Commander at the 150th Spring Reunion of New Hampshire Consistory in Penacook, NH. April 27, 2014 I plan to attend the Grand Commandery of Maine s Installation of Officers in Portland, ME. May 9, 2014 I expect to attend the Grand York Rite Banquet in Manchester, NH. May 10, 2014 I plan to be at the Grand York Rite Sessions, including our Annual Conclave, on May 10 in Manchester, NH. I thank the members of this Grand Commandery for the trust they placed in me when electing me to this position. 13 Report of the Grand Captain General To the Right Eminent Grand Commander, Grand Commandery Knights Templar in the State of New Hampshire On May 27, 2013 at the Annual Meeting of North Star St. Gerard No. 4 I was installed as Grand Sentinel by REPGC Dennis A. Sheridan at the order of the Grand Commandeer September 6-8, 2013, I attended the NE Department Meeting in Albany, NY and did a presentation for Grand Council and Chapter while in attendance. We also had a meeting of all the Grand Offices on the future on NH Commandery. November 2, 2013, I attended a meeting of the Grand Officers after the Scottish Rite fall Reunion. January 2014, I attended an Order of the Temple in Portsmouth and after the Order I was escorted to the altar and Installed as Grand Captain General by the Grand Commander. February 1, 2014, I attended the Joint Official Inspection of the IG for Lancaster/Littleton and Concord/Claremont and served as the EC with EC Andy Lord for the Order and the three rehearsals in Tilton. February 23, 2014 met with Jurisprudence committee with the Grand Body heads and Sir Knights Lord, Smith, Ayen and Porter in Tilton, about upcoming proposed changes to the Grand Constitution. A discussion and explanation on the duties and responsibilities of the York Rite Grand Council followed. March 8, 2014, attended and participated in a Tactics Presentation and Reception of the Grand Commander with Pass and Review. Also attended the Past Commanders Association. March 22, 2014, I was unable to attend the Joint inspection of Manchester/Nashua and sent my regrets to the Grand Commander as I was out of state on Business. April 5, 2014, I attended the Official Inspection for Portsmouth and Rochester. On April 19, 2014 I will attend the Annual Business Meeting in Tilton. On April 27, 2014 I will attend the Annual Meeting and Banquet of the Grand Commandery of Maine. On May 9, 2014, I will attend the Grand York Rite Bodies Grand Banquet. On May 10, 2014, I will attend the Annual Meeting and Installation of Officers. 12

14 RECOMMENDATIONS 1.) That the NH Grand Commandery locate and select one vendor for the Uniform Jacket and pants with all the details needed to have the jacket in the correct manner and at a reasonable cost for our new members that need them and can no longer be furnished out of the closet. Also, that the vendor has a supply of the NH patches and placing of the Velcro on the uniform. The same for the Chapeau. Teach the new Officers how to wear the Uniform and use the Chapeau and Sword. 2.) A list of requirements from the Grand Commander to the Grand Officers when they start the new Grand Year so they know what is expected of them. 3.) Have several rehearsals throughout the year to keep all Officers sharp and start passing the knowledge from the Senior Members of Grand Commandery to the newer members so that when they pass their memory continues on in the work of the new Officers and becomes their Legacy of what used to make New Hampshire Grand Commandery great! 15 REPORT OF THE GRAND SENIOR WARDEN It has been my honor and pleasure to serve the Grand Commandery of New Hampshire as its Grand Senior Warden for the Templar Year. Not long after my election to said office I was fortunate enough to travel north with the incoming Commander of North Star-St. Gerard for his installation as Commander and Grand Sentinel. Additionally, I was greatly honored by the Grand Commander this past year to be asked to be the editor for the NH Supplement of the Knight Templar magazine and it has been my hope to provide something of interest to our valiant knights during that time. Earlier in 2014, I met with Sir Knights Leary, Ayen and Lord where we worked extensively on trying to revise and update the grand regulations for this Grand Commandery. We met with the Jurisprudence committee and offered proposals to strengthen the Grand Regulations, which we believe will be effective moving ahead. I have sat for the year on the Tactics Committee, and while I appreciate this appointment, there were no meetings of the committee and only brief discussion as to what it is in the tactics manual. I believe that this committee should meet and actively work to ensure tactics are being conducted uniformly and adequately across the jurisdiction. I continued on the Public Relations committee with SK Sheridan and have actively sought to promote not only Commandery work, but York Rite work, within our jurisdiction. This is an important committee and I would propose that its membership and utilization be increased in the coming years; this could mean in the production of videos, organizing lodge visits or other general outreach which would assist in the making of new Knights Templar. This will come, as well, through cooperation with the Membership Committee, on which I also sit. These two committees will ensure the future of the Knights Templar of New Hampshire and I am hopeful their work will continue long after I ve moved on. As a Grand Commandery officer, I have travelled around the jurisdiction whenever my schedule had permitted; please see below for my travels throughout the year associated with my position. May 28, 2013 I attended the York Rite bodies of Lancaster meeting where the annual meetings of each occurred and assisted in the installation of SK Paul M. Leary as Commander of his Commandery, and further assisted the Grand Recorder installing SK Leary as Grand Sentinel. August 14, 2013 I attended the Grand Commandery officers meeting at the Tilton Masonic Temple. September 25, 2013 I attended the stated conclaves of the Manchester York Rite Bodies in Manchester, New Hampshire. November 13, 2013 I attended the stated conclave of Trinity Commandery in Manchester, New Hampshire. November 25, 2013 I attended the Order of the Temple in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. December 22, 2013 I attended and participated in the Grand Commandery Christmas Observance in Manchester. 14

16 January 25, 2014 I attended and participated in the Grand Commandery full form opening practice in Exeter. February 1, 2014 I attended the Inspection of the North Star-St. Gerard Commandery in Tilton, New Hampshire. February 26, 2014 I attended the stated conclave of Trinity Commandery in Manchester, New Hampshire. March 8, 2014 I attended and participated in the Grand Commandery Tactics display in Manchester, New Hampshire. March 22, 2014 I acted as Senior Warden in the joint inspection of Trinity and St. George Commandery. March 29, 2014 I participated in the presentation of the Upper Valley DeMolay chapter s charter as a member of the Grand Commandery escort for the day. April 5, 2014 I attended and participated in the drill squad for the inspection of DeWitt Clinton and Palestine Commanderies. Again, it has been my distinct honor and pleasure to serve as a Grand Commandery officer this past Templar year and work with wonderful Sir Knights from around the jurisdiction. Smith, Grand Senior Warden REPORT OF THE GRAND JUNIOR WARDEN To the Right Eminent Grand Commander, Very Eminent Deputy Grand Commander, Eminent Grand Generalissimo, Captain General Senior Warden, and Recorder and the Sir Knights all of the Great State of New Hampshire: First of all, my most humble thanks to those who voted for me last year to fill the role Grand Junior Warden. I look forward to continued service in the many years to come. Over the past two to three years I have been watching and learning the ropes of the Grand York Rite. I have seen many Officers Reports that merely report a travel log and little else of substance. For those looking only for that information please find my travel log attached. From this point forward my report will be about my observations of the Rite and some suggestions. I feel it is my duty as an officer of the Grand York Rite to do all that I can to help the Rite move into the future with strength and prosperity. Feel free to contact me at any time discuss these topics with me as I am always looking to learn and grow. My Observations & Suggestions The first observation I have to make is that of the Missing Generation. It is just that, obviously missing. Masonry in general is devoid of a whole group guys who should be the experienced leaders by now with the old guard as their mentors and the new guard as their protégées. Teaching the new guys the rope and getting them started in their Masonic and leadership educations. But, alas they are not there and we cannot add them at this juncture, so let s move on to the next issue we can solve. Our current situation is such that we are in a place where the old guard still has the reins out of necessity, ala missing generation, and the new guard is ready and willing to learn quickly. Since time is not our friend, in my opinion, this transition needs to gain in fervor. I believe that this transition has already started in earnest with some of the wisest members of our order imparting their vast amounts of knowledge upon the new 15

17 guys. My hope is they continue to do so and try not get frustrated when we (the newer guard) don t absorb it all on the first download or two. My second observation is that of a general lack of focus and planning. This is changing however. In the past three months, I have seen more planning and strategy discussions happening at all levels of the York Rite, from the local level straight up and through the Grand Bodies. There has to be an excitement and a buzz that will cause other blue lodge members to want to join us and see what they are missing out on! We have too much to keep hiding it from them! I will lay it out there for any and all to know. If you give me ample notice and time, I am will to help anywhere in the state with any part you may need. Obviously the bigger the part the more time I will need unless I already know it. It is time for the new guard, READY OR NOT, to put up or shut up. I for one am READY! Let s go! On that same vein, I am also ready to learn and absorb from those who have gone before me. If you allow me to continue in a leadership role, I will work hard at trying to bring the Rite back to its rightful place as a vehicle for further Masonic light and fellowship! The third observation I have to make is that of unity. The York Rite while technically three separate bodies needs to start acting and moving on a more unified front. I think that working together as a cohesive team across the leadership of the York Rite is in ALL of our best interests. We need to dust off this Rite and put a high gloss shine back on it. I think that if we EXCEL in the areas of COMMITMENT to our Membership and KNOWLEDGE in our beautiful ritual, we CAN NOT FAIL!! This report outlines in great detail the thoughts and recommendations of the Membership and Education committee. It has been my honor and privilege to serve the Grand York Rite this past year and hope that I can continue to work with everyone else in our endeavor to make the York Rite truly great and special to all Masons! 24 PUBLICITY COMMITTEE REPORTS FOR NEW HAMPSHIRE Report of the Committee of Publicity and Public Relations To the Right Eminent Grand Commander, Grand Officers and Sir Knights of the Grand Commandery Knights Templar for the State of New Hampshire: The Publicity Committee reports that New Hampshire York Rite is still progressing well with Commandery Degree Work being performed around the State in active fashion. We are still using the web site at currently posting events on that page and info on our York Rite Bodies Trestleboards page. We still make use of the calendar to keep track of degree work and meetings. We strongly encourage all York Rite Bodies to submit their notices to the Grand Recorder s Office by so they may be included and their degree dates, etc. added to the calendar. Also please remember to inform the Grand Recorder when changing or cancelling events so that the calendar can be updated to reflect the change. We have released a new web site developed by Sir Knight Ayen. He has taken the time to redesign our current one and made it more attractive and professional. He has offered to assist us in keeping that page going and I will be discontinuing the current one by years end. To check out the new site go to and scroll around. I think you will appreciate the fine work he has done on this project. Our Facebook page is still active and attracts interested masons to inquire about the York Rite. SK Herbert H. Hutchinson s daily reports of deceased or ill brethren and sisters of our jurisdiction has stopped due to the fact he could no longer afford the cost of the newspapers subscription costs. David R. Walters, on April 19th, 2014 for the purpose of auditing the Grand Commandery financial records for the past fiscal year. Once again your Committee found the financial records in good condition, and commends the Grand Treasurer for his excellent work. Your Committee has also prepared a recommended budget for the ensuing year, , which is hereby presented for acceptance. 28 Report of the Grand Recorder To the RE Grand Commander and the Sir Knights of the State of New Hampshire: The Proceedings for 2014 are completed and have been placed on the web site. I have ed our sister Jurisdictions with copies of the same, as well as printed version required by the Grand Encampment Office. Bills for the Proceedings including materials, duplication and postage, as well as copying and postage for Annual Conclave notices, have been submitted to the Grand Treasurer and been paid in full. We are going to continue ask all Grand Officers to sign for materials supplied to them from the Grand Commandery. There are missing items that we have not been able to locate. I recommend that the incoming Grand Commander appoint a team to consider replacement of said Jewels, or perhaps purchasing a new set of less expensive ones. Most Reports from the Grand Officers have been submitted one week prior to the Annual Business Conclave. However, the request was a two week notification. Report from the various Committees have not been so received. I respectfully request that to make the Recorder s Office less challenging that all reports be ed to me in timely fashion. Last year I had to wait months for some reports and it held up finishing the Proceedings as hoped. On another note, all Commanderies but one have integrated into the YRIS system. I have taken over for North Star-St. Gerard Commandery and am using that for printing dues bills and keeping record of dues payments now. I could still bring our other Grand Bodies into that same system and make the work for all an easier chore. I have attached to my report a summary of the checking account and also an income and expense balance sheet. We received and distributed the life membership checks in the amount of $ to all the Commanderies. 31 Grand York Rite Bodies of New Hampshire Unified Report of the Education & Membership Committees of all Grand Bodies April 19, 2014 To the Leadership of all Grand York Rite Bodies in the State of New Hampshire, Sir Knights and Companions all, It was a pleasure to serve the three Grand York Rite Bodies as their Committee on Education and Membership for the past year. We thank R. Bradley Alderfer, Right Eminent Grand Commander; Roger A. Douillette, Sr., Most Illustrious Grand Master; and John S. Geas, Most Excellent Grand High Priest for appointing us to take on this task. Membership numbers and recruitment efforts for the various chapters in the state show signs of improvement. While we did not have the quantity of new members of a year ago, we do have a general improvement in the work. The Committee s goal was to start planning for the future of the York Rite. After several conversations, the committee agreed to focus on two items: Stronger commitment to our membership, and Deeper knowledge of our ritual and customs. Together, these things will, we believe, lead to excellence, setting the hallmark of the York Rite in the days to come. Recommendations for Immediate Implementation 1) EDUCATION AT EVERY MEETING. We must focus on that which will bring Companions and Sir Knights out to a meeting. Education is fundamental to Masonry, and should be used at every meeting to engage our members, utilizing Grand Officers as needed to assist. As suggestions, start a discussion on: A portion of the ritual. Dig into its meaning and how it should be portrayed to the candidates. The more we know about the ritual the better we will perform it, and the more meaningful it will be to the candidate. The symbols of the York Rite. Any of the seven liberal arts and sciences. 2) PLANNING. Lack of sufficient planning hurts the attendance at many York Rite events. Events need to be planned with enough lead time and communication to the membership, and to the public. Cooperation and coordinated planning with other Bodies will make for better attended and generally more successful events. 30

32 3) RITUAL DIVERSITY & EXCELLENCE. The bedrock of the York Rite is its beautiful ritual. It completes the story started as we began our Masonic journey. We need to tell that story in the most captivating and meaningful way possible. Here are some ideas on how best to do this: Maintain a list of people willing and able to perform parts of degrees. A list will help us identify areas of need, for members to work on memorizing, and allow work to be more diverse, by drawing on more members. Utilize the York Rite College in creating your list. Rehearse. Work on the ritual continually and progressively. Start by reading from the book. Work on perfecting the floor work and getting good at the mechanics of the degrees. Memorization and performance then can come into play. Do Full Openings at every meeting (If multiple bodies meet on one night, have a different body open each time). If a sufficient number are present to open at each meeting, close as well. If not, recess the body. Share the work. Break up bigger parts between members. There is no reason that the large pieces of ritual cannot be broken into more digestible portions. Give members work to keep them involved. 4) ELEVATOR SPEECH - MISSION & VISION STATEMENT. For members to easily tell What the York Rite is All About, we should have clearly stated Mission and Vision Statements for the organization, with a short list of bullet points our companions can use to explain York Rite in thirty seconds. 5) MENTOR. As members of the York Rite, we took an obligation to dispense light to our less informed Brethren. Become a mentor in your Blue Lodge. Be not only proficient at the lessons of ancient craft masonry but at their meaning as well. Teach this knowledge to these newly made brothers. Answer their questions and when the time is right they will ask the questions only the York Rite can answer for them. 33 To: Most Illustrious Grand Master Right Imminent Grand Commander Most Excellent Grand High Priest DEMOLAY/RAINBOW REPORT It is with great pleasure to inform you that DeMolay in New Hampshire is doing very well. A revitalized Chapter was reformed in the North Country all is well with them. It was with great pleasure to observe a new Chapter formed in Cornish with a full slate of officers and a NEW CHARTER was presented to the Upper Valley Chapter. They have a full slate of officers and a full advisory board. The new Chapter invited dignitaries where both I and REGC were in attendance. The Grand Commandery performed both a full crossed arch of steel salute for the state officers and a sword salute for the new Chapter and advisory board. The REGC had eight members present. The DeMolay International also presented to two of our York Rite officers the DeMolay Legion of Honor. R. Bradley and I and we thank them for the honor. RAINBOW IORG OF New Hampshire is doing very well and all assemblies are very active and traveling within the state with a few going out of state. All assemblies have a full slate of officers and are doing initiatory degrees. The Grand Officers are out and about the state, out of state and some going to Supreme. All the girls are working very hard towards their grand session all dignitaries were received with all proper courtesies by both Rainbow and DeMolay In conclusion, I would encourage all heads of York Rite to support our young girls and men. Bradley Alderfer, Right Eminent Grand Commander, Officers, and Sir Knights of the Grand Commandery of New Hampshire Date: March 31, 2014 During the last Templar year, no items were referred to this Committee. The Committee forwarded to all Commanderies the Grand Encampment s pamphlet, Guidelines for Patriotic and Civic Activities, in an electronic format. The Committee suggests that Commanderies recognize individuals within their communities who have demonstrated the virtues of patriotism; whether at a Stated or Special Conclave or at an awards banquet. The recognition may include presenting the honoree with a plaque or certificate, or with a flag flown over the White House. Flags may be ordered through the offices of Senators Ayotte and Shaheen, and Representatives Custer and Shea-Porter. The costs currently start at under $20.00, including shipping. The Committee recognizes the difficulties every Commandery faces in attaining an adequate compliment of Sir Knights to participate in a Memorial Day or Independence Day parade. 49 Report of the Grand Commander To the Officers and Members of the Grand Commandery, Knights Templar, State of New Hampshire, I submit the following report as Grand Commander: Introduction I would like to again welcome all of you to the Annual Conclave of the Grand Commandery of New Hampshire. We appreciate your taking the time to be with us, and understand that this time of year can be challenging, given that Mother s Day generally falls the day after this Conclave. I d like to thank Sir Knight William H. Koon, II, MEPGM, for joining us today and representing our Most Eminent Grand Master. We re glad to have you back with us. And to Sir Knight Thomas X. Tsirimokos, RENEDC, welcome to your own Grand Commandery. Thank you all and especially thank your ladies--for sharing your weekend with us. The demands on our time are many, and sharing some of your time with us is sincerely appreciated. This year has been somewhat personally challenging for me, the reasons for which many of you are aware. Perhaps the time has come for a reassessment of where my time can be most impactful. Activities What follows is a summary of the activities in which I was able to participate in during my term as Grand Commander. In many cases, my commitments in other Grand Bodies placed me at a particular activity in other regalia or in other hats. During the year, I had the opportunity to participate in the conferral of the Order of the Temple on several occasions, but for the first time in recent memory, I was able to witness the Order from the sideline. Among the highlights of my activities was an invitation to participate in the color guard, accompanied by several of your Grand Commandery officers, at a rather elaborate Veterans program sponsored by Burns Lodge. It s not often the Grand Commander gets to represent the Sir Knights while spending the entire evening on a relatively uncrowded dance floor yes, you can dance in uniform. It was truly enjoyable, and while I am certain our performance was worthy of tips, unfortunately, none were forthcoming. Once again, your Grand Commandery was asked to participate as escorts in the services on St. John s Sunday, both in Portsmouth and in Rindge. I chose to join DeWitt Clinton Commandery in Portsmouth for this occasion, while your Deputy Grand Commander and others represented us in Rindge. As the Christmas season approached, I had the pleasure of officiating at an Observance held at Manchester. The Observance was presented by the Grand Commandery. We thank the Knights of Trinity Commandery for their gracious hospitality. 48

50 I was also privileged to be received in my own Commandery as part of a full form opening. This impressive ceremony has fallen into relative obscurity within the State, and I am hopeful the practice will continue, so that my successors will have the opportunity to witness some of the pomp and circumstance that makes this Order unique. In March, I had the privilege of escorting the newly elected officers of Upper Valley Chapter into the chapter room for the conferral of their new Charter--a truly impressive gathering. I was accompanied by several officers, along with our Northeast Department Commander. It was a good showing for our Grand Commandery, and it was an honor to be involved. In addition, I was able to visit my colleagues in Pennsylvania, Massachusetts & Rhode Island, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Maine for at least portions of their Annual Sessions during my term, and was warmly received. I was also privileged to be accompanied by many of my officers. Thank you, Sir Knights, for your support. Further, I was warmly received in other Masonic bodies throughout the state, including the Grand Lodge of New Hampshire, The International Order of Rainbow for Girls, The Order of DeMolay, Granite State Conclave, Red Cross of Constantine, Profile York Rite College, No. 100, John Harris Council, No 458, AMD, Scottish Rite Council of Deliberation, and New Hampshire Consistory. I was also able to attend the Northeast York Rite Conference in Albany. Inspections I was able to attend two of the three Inspections within the State. These were well attended though not well enough. Sincere thanks to Sir Knight Robert L. Sutherland, Jr. for his tireless work as Inspector General. Decisions I d like to thank my Jurisprudence Committee under the capable leadership of Sir Knight Richard F. Cole, Jr. REPGC for their advice and collaboration during the year. I d also like to thank our Northeast Department Commander, Sir Knight Thomas X. Tsirimokos, and REPGC for his advice and counsel. I approved changes in by-laws for several Commanderies, most of which dealt with the changes in the time of meetings. After many discussions, and as a result of votes taken in their respective Commanderies, I approved the merger of Mt. Horeb and Sullivan-Hugh de Payens Commanderies. Mt. Horeb is the surviving Commandery and will continue to meet in Concord. 49

51 Late last year, I was made aware of the apparent resignation of Michael Blair as Commander of St. George Commandery. (We received nothing in writing, but he did turn in his uniform and regalia.) After consulting with Sir Knight Tsirimokos and the Grand Encampment Constitution, I decided that the best course of action was to formally remove him from office. This allowed for the transition of leadership to the Generalissimo as Acting Commander. Due to mounting family obligations, I accepted the resignation of Sir Knight John B. Clark from his position as Grand Generalissimo. I thank John for his faithful service to Templary in general, and to this Grand Commandery in particular. As a result, Sir Knight J. David Meader advanced to Grand Generalissimo as provided by the Grand Encampment Constitution. I appointed Sir Knight Paul Leary to serve as Grand Captain General, and Sir Knight Patrick J. O Sullivan to serve as Grand Sentinel. Unfortunately, the angel of death received the dread mandate and struck from the role of the living our dear frater Sir Knight Charles J. Kennedy, REPGC. Charlie was a great example and role model during my early years in Commandery, and he will be sorely missed. As he was serving this Grand Commandery as a member of the Committee on Jurisprudence at the time of his death, I appointed Sir Knight Glen R. Gordon to serve the remainder of his term. Finally, I issued General Order No. 1, conferring and encouraging candidates for contested offices the opportunity to address their qualifications and motivations, and to introduce themselves to the members of the Grand Commandery through personal remarks prior to ballots being cast. Awards and Honors As I reflect back on my Templar journey, I recall many individuals, too numerous to name, who had a significant impact on me, either by example or in the advice and instruction they provided, and I am pleased to have been able to suggest the formal recognition of two of those individuals. I was pleased to approve the nomination of Sir Knight Alan M. Robinson for our highest honor, the Knight Templar Cross of Honor. Alan and I were contemporaries in serving our respective Commanderies as Commander in what now seems a former life. He has continued to serve with distinction, and it gives me a great deal of pleasure to see him recognized as he so richly deserves. As a young Sir Knight, I was given the opportunity to travel around the State and to participate in the Inspections of various Commanderies throughout the State. As a result, I came under the watchful eye of our then Inspector General, Sir Knight Gerald F. Buehrer. Sir Knights, no man has contributed more to promote excellence in our Order than this hard working Sir Knight. He has been previously awarded the Knight Templar Cross of Honor, but this year I felt it was high time that he be recognized for his unparalleled efforts, and I was please to nominate him for recognition as an Honorary Past Grand Commander an honor well-deserved, and long overdue. 50

52 Finally, I would be remiss if I did not add my personal congratulations to Sir Knight John B. Clark. For his dedicated service, Sir Knight John was constituted as a Knight Commander of the Templar by the College of Honors. Acknowledgements I have been involved in this Grand Commandery for a number of years and have enjoyed the friendships I have developed, but as Grand Commander, it is vital that I seek to leave this Grand Commandery in better shape than that in which I found it. I have watched with pride as some of your junior officers have joined together, working and planning to grow our Order in the future. Among their accomplishments are a long overdue recasting of our Grand Regulations into a form and format that is more easily understood and free at least to the extent possible from inconsistency and redundancy. Specifically, I want to thank Sir Knights Paul Leary, Paul Smith, Scott Ayen, Andy Lord, and Steve Wood for their thoughtful planning and support. I have also been blessed to have worked with a strong Deputy Grand Commander. Thank you, Sir Knight Porter, for your tireless support. Sir Knights, should you elect him, this Grand Commandery will be in good hands. Recommendations Our Membership Committee is beginning to get their arms around several important issues. They are in a unique position to advance the Rite. We recommend that they be allowed to continue their work. I further recommend that the practice of exemplification of the full form opening and holding at least one Christmas observance be continued. I encourage the development of the capacity within the several Commanderies to exemplify the Orders of the Red Cross and Malta in full form. Conclusion As my tenure in this office draws to a close, I realize that this is not necessarily the end of a journey, but it certainly represents the end of an important chapter. So, as this portion of the journey comes to a close, I want to express my gratitude for the opportunity to have served you. It has been an honor. I want to thank the companions and Grand Officers for their support during my tenure. Thanks, especially to my dear friends you know who you are for your support. It has been rough and rugged at times, but you, my true brothers, have always been there. I can t thank you enough. To my children, thank you for understanding. To my Assistant, Monique, who keeps both me and my practice on track, regardless of where I m engaged, I couldn t do this without you. And 51

Grand Commander REPORT OF THE JURISPRUDENCE COMMITTEE To Right Eminent Sir Knight Robert Bradley Alderfer, Grand Commander, and the Sir Knights of the Grand Commandery, Knights Templar of New Hampshire: The Jurisprudence Committee has reviewed the report of the Right Eminent Grand Commander s activities for the Chivalric Year, and would commend and thank him for both a timely submission and a comprehensive report. The report addressed all significant elements necessary to document the effective management of this Grand Commandery during the Grand Commander s term of office. The Committee commends the Grand Commander for the extent and diversity of his activities both within and without the State, and would especially recognize his participation with both Masonic youth groups. The Chairman is aware that the Grand Commander was recognized for his achievements by being invested with the DeMolay Honorary Legion of Honor this past March. Such recognition is not arbitrarily awarded or easily earned. The Committee reviewed the by-law changes and Commandery mergers approved by the Grand Commander, and find them to be in accordance with applicable regulations. The Grand Commander was presented with several difficult personnel issues during his term, including the necessary removal of a Presiding Commander and the resignation of an elected Grand Commandery dais Officer for personal reasons. In both instances, the Grand Commander consulted with this Committee to ensure that his intended actions were within regulatory guidelines and/or within his prerogative. With one very minor exception, his proposed actions were spot on. The Committee heartily concurs with the honors recommended and approved for the Sir Knights indicated in the Grand Commander s report. The Committee members severally and individually are very familiar with each of the recipients, and we believe the recognition is well-deserved and appropriately presented for the service demonstrated by the recipients. Right Eminent Sir, it has been a distinct pleasure working with you this past year, and we thank you for the opportunity to serve our Grand Commandery. Knowing the personal turmoil you faced during the early part of your term, you are to be commended for your level of activity and degree of involvement in the operation and organization of Chivalric Masonry in New Hampshire. Tsirimokos and Installing Marshal and RE PGC, SK Dennis A. Sheridan and Installing Prelate. The prayer given at the Opening was written by SK Phillip J. Beiner and is included for historical significance. PRAYER FOR GRAND PRELATE Let us pray: O Lord Christ, who art ever ready to receive and to strengthen the earnest aspirations of thy children, look down in thy love upon these, your servants, who desire to labor as officers in this Grand Commandery. Sanctify them, O Lord, with thy heavenly grace that, growing continually in virtue, they may rightly practice the duties of their office and so be found acceptable in thy sight. 57

We therefore pray, Holy Father that you endue our Grand Commander and all that are put in authority under him with wisdom and understanding, that by their endeavors all things may be ordered and settled upon the best and surest foundations, to the happiness and welfare of our Order. O Lord Christ, help all Sir Knights preach your gospel at all times, and when necessary use words, that we may become instruments of thy peace and shining examples of your love by practicing your commandments, to love God with all of our hearts, with all of our souls, with all of our strength, and with all of our minds, and to love our neighbor as ourselves. (Luke 10:27) And now, instructed by the words of sacred scripture and following holy tradition from old, we pray as you have taught us: Our Father, who art in Heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, On earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, And forgive us our trespasses. As we forgive those that trespass against us. 60 GRAND YORK RITE BANQUET The combined York Rite Banquet was held at 7:00 p.m. in the dining hall in the Best Western Hotel in Manchester. A fine banquet was enjoyed by all, and speeches were kept minimized. The Grand Commander thanked all who had made this a successful venture. The last three speakers were SK Thomas X. Tsirimokos, R.E. Department Commander, Sir Knight William H. Koon, II ME Past Grand Master of the Grand Encampment and Right Worshipful Deputy Grand Master Brother John F. Gordon, who gave concluding remarks. Past Grand Commander Alderfer was presented with his PGC Jewel.
