2 FALL 2009 VALLEY NEWS AND VIEWS PAGE 2 RALPH CROSSAN RECEIVES 33 AT BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS The 197th Annual Meeting of the Supreme Council of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction was recently held at Boston, Massachusetts. On Tuesday August 25, 2009 the 33º was conferred upon 111 candidates which included Ralph E. Crossan from the Valley of Cambridge. Ralph is a member and past master of Somerset Lodge #76 F&AM, Past District Education Officer, Past District Deputy Grand Master, Past Grand Chaplin of the Grand Lodge of Ohio, currently serves as District Advisor of the 13th Masonic District, is an honorary member of five lodges in the 13th District and in 2006 received the Grand Master s Community Service Award. He is a member of the York Rite Bodies of New Lexington and joined the Valley of Cambridge with the fall class of Ralph and Rita live in Somerset, Ohio and are the parents of three daughters and one son and several grandchildren. FROM THE SECRETARY S DESK Fall is here and things did not slow down around the office one bit during the summer. We are rapidly approaching the Fall Reunion and it is very short compared to most reunions. The 4 on Monday and the 31 and 32 on Saturday. Lunch and some entertainment and we hope to be on our way home by at least 2 p.m. Bring the ladies as we will have something for them and the lunch is freereservations please (170 maximum). One of the interesting things that has happened to us lately is changes by the US Postal Service for bulk mailing. We have worked hard for some time trying to keep addresses up to date, but now it is easier in some ways and more complicated in others. Prior to this the bulk mailing generally went off in the postal cyberspace when the addresses were bad. We knew a lot of bulk mail did not get delivered. Now we use Return Service Requested on newsletter mailings and they are returned if the address has been changed, not good, or in a lot of cases-temporarily away. We are still learning to work with all of this, but our addresses are getting better because of our efforts and the efforts of Supreme Council. If you are not getting your mail please give the office a call and we will try to fix it. Dues notices should be reaching you any time. This is a busy time of year as we try to work with the Supreme Council to get them in the mail and then as they come in, as we post and deposit the dues. There is a $3.00 increase this year and it is Supreme Council per capita. The Valley had no increase. If there is a problem with your dues notice please let us know. We solicit for donations for three items with the dues notices. At the time of paying their dues last year the members of the Valley of Cambridge donated $2096 to the Learning Center, $852 to the Ohio Masonic Home, and $490 to the Membership Endowment Fund. Thanks to everyone for paying their dues and supporting these items. A lot of effort is being expended to strengthen the local Scottish Rite Clubs. Presently there are five which are active to one degree or another; East Ohio, Athens/Meigs, Muskingum County, Perry County and Washington County. We are trying to have activities closer to home for our members and if possible attend one of their functions and join in the fellowship. In this issue is the announcement of the Abbott Scholarship winners for We had 27 applications and I am glad I did not have to select the winners. A lot of great kids applied for this limited number of scholarships and if you see one of them offer your congratulations. This was not an easy process and is very competitive. I wish we had more money to give out, but it is limited. For your information the Blue Envelope Appeal helps support these scholarships. We are still accepting contributions to the Building Endowment Fund ($500) and the Membership Endowment Fund ($700). The Membership Endowment pays your dues for life and both of these funds contribute to the long term financial stability of the Valley. If you need any information please let me know. Fraternally, Tom Fisher-Executive Secretary
