4 Alumn House Expands James S. Ruby, '27 As ths ssue of the Alumn Magazne s beng maled to you, the addton to Alumn House, headquarters of your Assocaton, has been completed and opened for your use when next you vst the campus. Our expanded actvtes n behalf of the Unversty and her sons are now provded for n a buldng whch n desgn and fu~nshng truly reflects the sprt of Georgetown, both the vllage and the nsttuton. Perhaps the most strkng feature of Alumn House s the Club Lounge on the frst floor of that porton of the buldng at the ntersecton of 36th and 0 Sts. The Lounge, measurng thrty by ffteen feet, s panelled n Pal Dao wood from the Phlppnes, the gft of Thomas A. Dean, College '20 of Chcago. The wall-to-wall carpet, n a forest green twst, s mounted on rubber for greater co~nfort and long-wearng assurance; t s the generous gf~ of the Georgetown Alumn Club of Metropoltan New York: Traverse draperes n an attractve pattern to blend w1th the walls and the carpet have been donated by Dr. Thomas F. Hggns, College '33, Med. '37 of Elzabeth, N. J:. A small but adequate ktchen and a lavatory adjolll the Lounge on a hallway whch leads to the receptonst's offce on the frst floor. The ktchen has a refrgerator, donated by the Medcal Class of '28, storage cabnet_s and a snk. A small grll wll be added when funds are ava1lable. The Receptonst's offce contans a carved oak desk, donated by the late Wllam R. Shearman, '20 of Tucson, Arz. t also contans the Alphabetcal Card Fle lstng the names of some 60,000 former students of the Unversty, both lvng and deceased, together wth the occupatons, addresses, etc. of the lvng. Another room on the frst floor contans our correspondence fles and a card fle of Alumn arranged by classes for ready assstance to Charmen of Reunon classes and for Alumn wshng to contact ther classmates. Stars rsng from the Receptonst's offce lead to the second floor where offce space s provded for the Executve Secretary, the Assstant to the Executve Secretary, the Facu~ty Representatve, the Bookkeeper and Stenographer. The Executve Secretary's Offce, whch occupes the space formerly used for our smaller Club Lounge before th~ addton, features a large oak desk presented to Alumm House by the fve Romweber brothers of Batesvlle ndana, who manufactured the furnture n the Alumn Rooms at McDonough Gymnasum. The desk s a replca of one they :made for the offce of "Happy" Chandler when he became Baseball Commssoner. The brothers ar.e John, '23 George '27; Robert, '30; Wllam, '35, and Paul who ' went to ' Notre Dame. n keepng wth the "Bl ue an d Gray" tradton at Georgetown, the walls of ths room are hung wth authentc Cvl War lthographs, the gft of Henry Lee '51, of Rchmond, Va.. The College class of '52 has presented a set of eght prnts of Georgetown Campus scenes, whch are hung n the offce of the Assstant to the Executve Secretary. Two of the second floor offce rooms are connected by a seven-foot openng so that the area can be used for largescale sortng operatons when mass maln~s t? the ~lum? are undertaken. At other tmes when qmet S desued m these two rooms, they can be separated by a 'Modern-Fol~" door, the gft of the Law Class of '28 n memory of theu hghly successful 25th Reunon. The basement of Alumn House contans our rather ex-. tensve malng department. Two Addressograph machn~s are employed, one wth an automatc feed for large malngs, the other equpped wth a lstng devce to allow us to.produce names and addresses of Alumn n any area of the country or the world. More than 26,000 addressograph plates are mantaned here, dvded by states and countes and by foregn countres, enablng us to communcate wth alumn, students, and specalzed groups, quckly and effcently. The basement also c_ontans s t~rage space for offce supples, and the heatmg and ancondtonng systems for the expanded Hou~e... n accordance wth the Dstrct of Columba bmldpg reg ulato.ns, the entre structure s protected wth fre doors. The renovaton of the orgnal Alumn House was done by the Unversty at a cost of $16,000. The more recent renovaton of the addton cost another $18,000. Furnshngs and equpment for the House, as well as cleanng and mantenance, have been provded out of a fund con trbuted by ndvdual Alumn over the last two years. A lst of the names and classes of these "Fellows of Alumn House" s kept up-to-date and posted on our frst floor. So far, nearly 500 men have contrbuted n some measure to our headquarters. am sure that they share wth us the pr'de we feel n ths present demonstraton of the unty and effectveness of the "Georgetown Famly". Alumn House s open every week-day from nne to fve. Any actve alumnus or class group may arrange for the use of the Club Lounge at any tme, day or evenng, by makng reservatons wth the House staff n advance. Al good Georgetown men are encouraged to treat ths head quarters as ther own and to vst t often. NEW ASSSTANT TO THE EXECUTVE SECRETARY Several months ago, the Offcers and Board of Governors of the Alumn Assocaton decded that the growng actvtes of the Assocaton necesstated an Assstant to the Executve Secretary to help carry the load of servng the Alumn and the Unversty. After a careful revew of a large number of possble choces, the Commttee apponted to select the new Assstant, decded upon James H. Buchholz, '49, of Kansas Cty, Mo. An nfantry veteran of the Pacfc Campagns n World War, Mr. Buchholz came to Georgetown after hs dscharge. At the Unversty he was very actve n student affars, served on the Student Coun cl, engaged n debatng actvtes wth the Gaston and Phlodemc Socetes, and was the frst wnner of the Coakley Award for outstandng all-around student performance. 9 ATHLETCS BEN A. BUSCHER By CHARLE STEELE '52 Electrcal Contractor For a school that goes n for qualty rather than quantty n all thngs, ncludng athletcs, Georgetown has had a remarkable number of great athletes wear her blue and grey. As the years slde by t's easy to forget that the great Arthur Devln played thrd base for the Hoyas before gong on to fame n a ew York Gant unform. Because Jack Hagerty and George Murtagh have been the backbone of athletcs on the Hlltop for qute a few years now, some may not remember that they stood out both as Georgetown grdders and as New York Gant stars. The lst of smlar athletes s not a short one. Al Blozs, Harry Costello, Auge Lo, Buddy O'Grady, Danny Kraus, Tony Plansky and Ed Hargadn are some of the stand outs and there are many more of the same calber. Just last June three great runners and the number two draft choce of the Mlwaukee Hawks basketbal~ team graduated n the form of Charle Capozzol, Joe La Perre, Carl Joyce and Bll Bolger.. n an attempt to honor both Georgetown and her great athletes, the Alumn Assocaton s n the process of creatng the "Georgetown Hall of Fame", whch wll preserve the memory of athletc stars of natonal rankng who went to G_eorgetown.. Jack Walsh of the Washngton Post, Bob Ad.de of the Tmes Herald and another Washngton sports wnter yet to be chosen wll make the fnal selectons for the Hall of Fame. ames wll be submtted to them by an alumn commttee of fve grads from fve dfferent decades. We on ths fve man commttee wll try to submt to the sports wrters all those worthy of membershp n the Hall of Fame, but fve men cannot be expected to know all the great athletes who even went to Georgetown. For ths reason we're callng on all the alumn for help. f you know of a Georgetown athlete who was a natonal standout, whch s the norm for admttance, please send hs name, year and achevements to me, care of Georgetown Unversty, Washngton 7, D. C., and 'll see to t that the name comes before the alumn commttee for consderaton. f ten alumn send n the name of any one athlete, that name automatcally wll be submtted to the sports wrters. The success of the whole dea wll depend to a large degree upon the alumn response, because only f that response s there wll the Hall of Fame be a vald collecton of Georgetown's greatest athletes. SPEAKNG OF GREAT ATHLETES, two of the senors returnng to the Hlltop ths Fall may fall nto that category before they graduate next June. They are track man Edde Krk and basketballer Lou Ggante. Krk gave an ndcaton of thngs to come last sprng n a race n whch he fnshed thrd. Though losng out to Capozzol and LaPerre, Ed's tme for the mle was 4:15. The New Jersey speedster was also a manstay on the two and four mle relay teams whch swept the Drake relays, beatng all GEORGETOWN UNVERSTY ALUMN MAGAZNE 3906 Yuma St., N. W Grace St., N. W. EM wo Bg Ten comers as well as the famous Wes Santee and hs Kansas team mates. Ed should be runnng the mle n und ~ r 4:10 ths year, and no one would be too surprsed f he got down to 4:06 and 4:07. t's hard to estmate just how much consolaton Lou Ggante must be to Coach Buddy Jeannette as the basketball season approaches. Buddy saw ten of hs travelng squad of twelve graduate last June. What's worse, only two lettermen are returnng, and only four who have ever played as much as a complete varsty game wll be on hand. Joe Carroll, a frst strnger last year, wll be terrfcally mportant to the club ths season, but t's Ggante who wll have to be the superman. t sn't accurate to say.. that as Lou goes so wll go the Hoyas, because Lou undoubtedly wll play top notch basketball. He dd all last season. Besdes scorng, play makng and defendng, however, all of whch the 5'11" spark plug does wth the best, Lou wll have to hold together a predomnantly sophomore team. The team wll be young, nexperenced, the shortest n years and almost completely lackng n depth. t's also the fastest n years, wth two of the most talented sophs Hoya fans wll have seen snce Bolger and Sullvan n Warren Buehler and Bll Co\vley. Lou Ggante s the boss when he's on the court. Ths was true even on last year's Senor club, and t wll be more true ths year. So f Lou can make ths club clck, he'll rank among the greatest of Hoya hoop stars. For that matter whether the team clcks or not, t's a safe bet that Ggante wll jon O'Grady, Hassett, Kraus, Hargadn and O'Keefe as the very best of Georgetown back court men of recent years. SPORTS AN STUF: Tom O'Keefe, '50, now out of the Army, wll be head basketball coach at Catholc U. ths season... When Bll Bolger takes the floor for the Mlwaukee Hawks ths Fall he'll be one of the two Georgetown men n the N.B.A... The other s veteran John Manken of the Boston Celtcs... Denny Murphy of last year's team was drafted by Baltmore, Hughe Bens by Rochester and Jerry Nappy by Syracuse, but Nappy and Murphy are army bound and Bens wll forsake pro ball for law school... Bob Scott who played on the basketball team durng Buddy O'Grady's last season as coach, has been honorably dscharged from the army, and could gve the basketball team some of the experence t lacks... Carl Joyce, Joe LaPerre and Charley Capozzol ran n Europe durng ths past summer... Don't forget to send n your nomnatons for the Hall of Fame. 7

11 A Plan for Georgetown's Future By JoHN J. TuNMORE '31 Presdent, Georgetown Unversty Alumn Assocaton Alumn who follow the newspapers and natonal perodcals are well aware of the problems confrontng pr"vately endowed and operated nsttutons of hgher educaton n -the Unted States today. Those havng large endowments fnd that whle the cost of educatng students s ncreasng, the ncome from endowments, once adequate, s decreasng and some materal assstance from outsde sources must be sought f the non-tax supported Colleges and Unverstes are to survve. The plght of the prvate college wthout a large endowment s stll more desperate. ncome from small endowment funds s neglgble, and rsng prces contnue to defy the ncome from student tuton fees to meet them. Some two hundred Amercan Colleges and Unverstes have been able to exst and even to develop educatonally only because ther Alumn have looked realstcally at the problem and have determned to meet t. Thus, the prvate College has been able to compete, successfully, wth the St~te and Muncpal Unversty whch draws upon appropratons from taxes. Your Offcers and the Board of Governors of the Georgetown Unversty Alumn Assocaton have long been aware that Georgetown's ancent place as a leader n educaton s n jeopardy. Prces have rsen n Washngton as n the rest of the country. The Unversty's endowments are meager. Tuton rates and fees cannot be advanced to the pont where desrable students look elsewhere for what Georgetown has always offered n a superor way. n June of 1952, those offcers and Board members determned to nvestgate the possbltes of launchng, for Georgetown, an Annual Gvng Program smlar to the Alumn Funds operatng so successfully at schools lke Dartmouth, Yale, Prnceton, Notre Dame and others too numerous to menton. Snce then, wth panstakng care, every angle of the program has been examned and dscussed and the fnshed plan s now ready for executon. What s an Annual Gvng Program? t s just about what the name mples. Each year each former student of the Unversty wll be asked to contrbute what he can to enable the Unversty to develop wthout runnng nto defct fnancng. Furthermore, the ndvdual Alumnus may choose the functon of the Unversty to whch he wshes to gve hs support. He may select, as the recpent of hs generosty the College, the Graduate School, the Medcal School, the Law School, the Dental School, the Foregn Servce School, the School of Nursng or the nsttute of Langustcs. Or he may desgnate hs gft to pay off the debt stll remanng on the McDonough Gymnasum. Or, f he wshes, he may leave the dsposton of hs gft to the dscreton of the Unversty Drectors. Whatever hs wshes n the matter, they wll be scrupulously followed. The value of every gft can best be determned by measurng t aganst the endowment (non-exstent) whch t represents. For example, at current nterest rates, an annual gft of $35.00 represents the nterest on $1,000 of endowment. By makng hs gft an annual one, the grateful alumnus can mantan the equvalent of as much endowment as he wshes or can afford, and wth full knowledge that hs annual gft s a tax-deductble tem. Meanwhle, problems other than operatonal costs of the Unversty have been gven careful study by Father Bunn and by Father Foley, Drector of Unversty Development. Ths study reveals that the 164-year-old campus needs more brcks and mortar f t s to become the even fner Georgetown whch we all desre. Educaton lke ndustry cannot stand stll, t must keep pace wth the expandng horzons and needs of Amercan lfe. Georgetown needs a Scence Buldng, a more effcent dnng hall, a permanent structure for ts School of Foregn Servce. ts School of Nursng needs a buldng to adjon the Unversty Hosptal. The Hosptal tself, as a teachng hosptal, needs a new wng for more beds to meet the rsng demand for ts excellent servces. Georgetown needs a permanent home for her growng Graduate School. The Lbrary needs a modern replacement for ts cramped quarters n Healy. The Law School needs to expand nto a Law Center. The nsttute of Languages and Lngustcs, though only four years old, has outgrown ts present quarters and needs a new buldng to keep t n the very forefront of language educaton whch has been so vtally necessary n the complex modern world. New technques and new equpment now avalable to the Dental professon requre that Georgetown's School of Dentstry expand ts facltes. And, n servng manknd by educatng the best mnds, Georgetown needs an opportunty to offer more scholarshp ads to promsng students. Furthermore, endowed chars and professorshps would make t possble for her to attract addtonal dstngushed scholars to her facultes. The "brcks and mortar" program, whch s the Captal Gfts phase of the Greater Georgetown Fund, wll run concurrently wth the Annual Gvng Program sponsored by the Alumn Assocaton. Natonal Charman of the Greater Georgetown Fund wll be Thomas C. Egan, '17 of Phladelpha, formerly Presdent of the Assocaton. Hs Commttee wll seek out sources of gfts whch wll make the "Fner Georgetown" possble.. Plans call for the ntaton of the program at a dnner for commttee charmen and fund workers at Georgetown on October 24. Shortly thereafter, detaled nformaton on Georgetown's needs and our plans to meet them wll be maled from Alumn House to each Alumnus. Then the varous State Charmen wll arrange personal contact wth as many Alumn as possble, and those who cannot be so Contnued on Page 15 9

Meanwhle, your Alumn Assocaton whch s responsble for a porton of ths program and s vtally nterested n the success of both of ts phases, must contnue to count upon the actve membershp to support, through annual dues as n the past, the actvtes of our organzaton. The responsble offcers of the Assocaton feel that our organzaton has been successful n servng Georgetown's nterests, and much of that success s due to our ablty to fnance Assocaton busness ourselves. Your deas upon the program outlned above wll be gratefully receved and consdered. Above all, the Charmen of our two funds wll be grateful to an Alumn who wll volunteer to assst n these efforts.
