4 Seamus Heaney (1939 ) Poetry Corner A native of Northern Ireland Heaney received the Nobel Prize in Literature in Here, he praises the satisfaction of manual labor, life on a farm, and the succession of generations. Follower My father worked with a horse-plough, His shoulders globed like a full sail strung Between the shafts and the furrow. The horse strained at his clicking tongue. An expert. He would set the wing And fit the bright steel-pointed sock. The sod rolled over without breaking. At the headrig, with a single pluck. Of reins, the sweating team turned round And back into the land. His eye Narrowed and angled at the ground, Mapping the furrow exactly. I stumbled in his hob-nailed wake, Fell sometimes on the polished sod; Sometimes he rode me on his back Dipping and rising to his plod. I wanted to grow up and plough, To close one eye, stiffen my arm. All I ever did was follow In his broad shadow round the farm. I was a nuisance, tripping, falling, Yapping always. But today It is my father who keeps stumbling Behind me, and will not go away. Wikipedia 2009 Emerald Elections Seventy-four Emeralds voted. 6 Condolences David Skip Russell ( ) Although born in Worcester, Massachusetts, Skip grew up riding a bicycle in the School House Road area and lived in Coral Gables and Miami for over 60 years. He married Judy after their graduation from Coral Gables High School (1959). Skip got his nickname from his love of sailing, which he inherited from his late father (Gus), a founding member of Coral Reef Yacht Club. Skip attended the University of Miami before starting a career in banking and insurance. He went on to earn a stellar reputation among doctors, hospitals and Florida officials in his decades of service in the healthcare industry. He was an excellent dancer who loved to talk politics and current events. Skip was active in many local organizations, President of the South Florida Emerald Society and a member of the Coral Gables Congregational Church. Condolences to his wife Judy, daughter Tiffany and son-in-law James Grippando, and three grandchildren: Kaylee, Ryan and Ainsley and sister-in-law Gayle DeJulio and cousin Richard Dodd. Services were held February 15 at Coral Gables Congregational Church, followed by a reception at his daughter Tiffany s home. R.I.P. (from the Miami Herald obituary of February 13, 2013) Valentine s Day Miami Herald How I Met My Other: Readers tales of love FLOWERS AND FOOTBALL, By Helen and Jerry Doyle, In the summer of 1974, I was fresh out of college, working for a shipping company at the Port of Miami. The company had leased a new ship. I was about to leave for the weekend on Friday when my boss informed me that I was expected on the ship at 7 p.m. for a reception welcoming the new crew. I had a date, but not going was not an option. I opted to go, meet everyone, welcome the crew, then leave. I met about 50 people. One of them showed up at my office the following Monday and said: I saw you across that room Friday night and knew you were the one. I m going to marry you! I promptly informed him that he was crazy. Not letting this deter him in any way, he embarked on a campaign to win me over, starting with tickets to the Dolphins game. Then came flowers, chocolates, concerts, even taking my mother to the circus and my cat to the vet. He convinced me. In July of 1976 we got married. We still go to Dolphins games. And, he still brings me flowers and chocolates. (Compiled by Howard Cohen and Jessica de Leon, Miami Herald February 14, 2013) (Helen and Jerry Doyle and the parents of Kassandra Kassie Doyle.) 6
