The St. Patrick s Day Committee is a not-for-profit 501 (c) 3 organization affiliated with the South Florida Emerald Society, which, in turn, is a 501 (c) 7 organization in the IRS code. Tinkers Faire. Ladies: there is still time to rummage through your closets and dressers and bring your forgotten treasures to the Tinker s Faire early on March 8th. Someone will be there to accept your cast-off goodies. The Tinker's Faire will accept everything--except stuffed animals and Charlie Davis, President used clothing unless still new and in original wrapping. Soda Bread Booth Ladies, if you can assist at the Soda Bread Booth, call Jan Paris (305) President Charlie Davis announced that the 2014 Festival will give special honor to the memory of Marge Hartnett, who passed away over a year ago. R.I.P. Our Festival book funds the Festival. Despite the difficult economic times, our Ad Committee worked very hard. Bill O Brien, Billy Cameron and Judi Tierney Sherry deserve our congratulations for all their efforts. And Thank You to all our advertisers who make the Festival possible. Later from 6-8pm, we need you to see Bill Gregory to take down/ put away. Recall that the City of Coral Gables expects the Park to be left in pristine condition. Our final pre-festival meeting was this Tuesday, March 4, 7pm at the Coral Gables/ South Miami Elks Club. 2

Spouses, Veterans and friends are invited; late Chief Gael Tom Flynn will be remembered and Veterans will be honored. Menu will be individual-choice dutch-treat+standard donation. Celtic Cultural Series: March 23 The Celtic Cultural Series will feature a discussion of the book Gangs of New York at 4pm, Sunday March 16 at John Martins, 253 Miracle Mile, Coral Gables. The 2002 film, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Cameron Diaz and Daniel Day-Lewis, was based on the 1928 book by Herbert Asbury. Host Ed Cooke will lead the discussion. This event is free and open to the public; parking is available either on Miracle Mile or at City parking garages north and south of JohnMartins. The Great Hunger Recalled The Irish Potato Famine of the 1840 s was recalled by Marie Tierney Smith in a discussion sponsored by the Celtic Cultural Series/South Florida Emerald Society on February 16 at JohnMartins. Ed Cooke, host, introduced Mrs. Smith who highlighted the recent publication of The Famine Plot by Tim Pat Coogan as bringing out the motivations of the principals. Among the 25 Emeralds and guests were: Ann McShane, Helen Synnott, Mary Ann and Oliver Kerr, Frances Baboun, Bill O Brien, Leo and Dorothy Cook, Molly Harris, Jane Thompson, Patricia Villacorta, Melissa Dynan, Don and Tracy Harrington, Dan Fitzgerald and Billy Cameron. At the March Board meeting, the Nominating Committee composed of Chair Dan Fitzgerald, Chris Kelley and Hugh Ryan announced that the following Officers and 3-year Directors of the South Florida Emerald Society had been elected for : President: Sean P. Dear Emeralds: Joe McManus asked if I wanted to write a greeting as the South Florida Emerald Society s President-Elect. Well, being of Irish descent, how could I not take advantage of this opportunity to say Hello! The first thing I would like to do is thank Hugh Ryan for his two years of leadership as President. He worked to ensure that the St. Patrick s Festival will return this year, and be held at the same place, Fred B. Hartnett Ponce Circle Park. The second thing I want to share with you is that the International Police Association (IPA), Region 43 has invited members and their families to attend the IPA s Annual Picnic. (see page 5) That will take place at the US Coast Guard Communication Facility south of 152 Street and SW 117 Avenue on March 29, There are a couple of things happening soon, and there will be more, new and traditional activities throughout the year. Hope to see you Saturday at the Festival! Sean Dear Emeralds: My term as President of the South Florida Emerald Society is coming to an end at the Festival on March 8th. I d like to thank all of the Board members and the Society for a great run. We ve had some great times and festive events in the past two years! In addition to many of the Emerald traditions that celebrate our 60-year history, we ve also started some new traditions, like marching in the Junior Orange Bowl Parade in Coral Gables and going out to the ballgame at Marlins Park to watch our home team (this year-april 5th)! Our membership is growing, participation is up, and the St. Patrick s Day Festival is back! Our Society is in a great position for the future. With Sean Hayes as our incoming President, I am certain that the good times will continue! So, let s all support our new President! 6 March-April Emerald Board Meetings The next Board meetings will be at 6:30pm Thursday March 6 and April 3 at the Miami Yacht Club on Watson Island on the MacArthur Causeway. Attendance of all Board members is expected; all members are welcome. Membership and Dues By the February meeting, out of 120 possible members, 52 had paid annual dues, 64 were unpaid and there were 4 reinstatements.
