Carroll Cameron Immediate Past President Edward S. Cooke Directors Billy Cameron Carroll Cameron James Cooney John Cosgrove Mary Ann Fierro John Kane Oliver Kerr William O Brien Joseph McManus Patrick Novak David Russell Judi Sherry Editors Mary Ann Fierro Oliver Kerr Member Tel: (305) On Bloomsday, June 16, you are invited to a special evening celebration of James Joyce and his most celebrated novel Ulysses featuring Leopold Bloom. The evening begins at 6:30 at Books & Books, 265 Aragon Ave, Coral Gables (just behind JohnMartin s) with dramatic readings from the novel performed by local actors and celebrities. Then join the parade around the block at 7:30 pm to dinner and live music at JohnMartin s for a special Bloomsday menu. Stick around after dinner for some sweet old songs and a goodnight reading of Molly Bloom s romantic soliloquy to her husband that ends the novel and our evening together. Mark your calendars for the June social! Thursday, June 26 at 7:00 pm we will once again assemble in the hallowed home of one of our most gracious hosts, Maurice Grondin. We re in for a special treat, with a Clambake planned for that evening. Almost downtown, Maurice s address is 2355 South Miami Avenue. Phone for reservations (we need to know how many clams to dig) and directions. See you there! July 4 th Celebration on Key Biscayne Join your fellow Emeralds in the traditional July 4 th Parade on Key Biscayne at 11:00 am. Emeralds and their families and friends are encouraged to walk under the Emerald Society banner. Wear green tops and white bottoms for this great event. Bring sunscreen and wear a hat. We rendezvous in the parking lot of St. Agnes Catholic Church, right at the first light on Crandon Blvd. in the Village. Try to come over before 9:30 am, as the traffic gets heavy after that. Pre-parade refreshments will be served.
2 Board Members: The monthly Board will be on Thursday, July 10, at the Miami Yacht Club on Watson Island at 6:30 P.M. Attendance is expected of all Board members. Dinner and drinks, as usual, are available at the club. Stick around for a while after the meeting and enjoy good company by the water s edge under the stars. Beautiful on a warm summer s night! Congratulations to our editor, Oliver Kerr. Oliver, a Miami-Dade County planner working in the Planning and Zoning Department recently was honored as Best Public Servant by the New Times newspaper in their Best of Miami, 2003 awards. His congenial response to public enquiries and his timely handling of information requests earned him this welldeserved honor. Your fellow Emeralds salute you, Oliver. We re very proud of you. A thousand thanks to Judi Sherry for orchestrating a wonderful evening at Christie s Restaurant for our Installation Dinner for Officers & Directors. The ambiance was wonderful. Fifty Emeralds and guests braved a tropical downpour to attend. The food was delicious and the craic (fun and fellowship Irish style) was great! An outstanding job, Judi! Irish Toasts May of you live as long as you want, And never want as long as you live. Again we thank John Doherty for his submission of Irish proverbs. Keep em coming, John. Remember, anyone can submit stuff. Contact the editors. Poetry Corner Each month the Shamrock News will present a poem by an Irish poet. Here s one of William Butler Yeat s (1865 to 1939) most famous poems. Like last month s poet, Seamus Heaney, he was awarded in 1923 the Nobel Prize for poetry. He helped found the Abbey Theatre in Dublin. The Lake Isle of Innisfree I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree, And a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made. Nine bean rows will I have there, and a hive for the honeybee, And live alone in the bee-loud glade. And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow, Dropping from the vales of the morning to where the cricket sings; There midnight s all a glimmer, and noon a purple glow, And evening full of the linnet s wings. I will arise and go now for always night and day I hear lake water lapping with low sounds by the shore; While I stand on the roadway, or on the pavements grey, I hear it in the deep heart s core. Here s to a long life and a merry one. A quick death and an easy one. A pretty girl and an honest one. A cold beer and another one!
3 Christmas Party Update Tom Dunn is looking for volunteers to help with the Christmas Party Thursday, December 4, Our focus now is finding spectacular raffle prizes. Send your ideas and leads to Tom at or Emeralds. Be sure to patronize those businesses and services that advertised in our recent Festival Booklet. New Members We extend a warm Irish welcome to our new members this month. Janice McKay Sponsored by Mary Ann Fierro Serre Murphy Sponsored by Bill O Brien. Cultural Series The Sunday afternoon Cultural Series held at John Martin s Restaurant will not meet during the summer months (June through September). Heartfelt congratulations to John and Grace Wright on the occasion of their 50 th wedding anniversary this month. What s the secret, John and Grace? We need to know. Condolences to one of our Festival Colleens this year, Krystyna Kraska-Llenza on the recent passing of her grandfather, John Kraska. Editors Note This newsletter is being ed to members with addresses on file with The Emerald Society. There s color in this edition and you can see it on the Emerald Society website.
