2 From Your Pastor...from the heart There is no wisdom, no insight, no plan that can succeed against the Lord. The horse is made ready for the day of battle, but victory rests with the Lord. (Proverbs 21:30-31) 2018 is going to shape the life of our church for years to come as we purposefully come together to discern God s vision for the future of our church. We find ourselves at a wonderful crossroads 1)looking back we have successfully navigated the construction of a new building and expect to pay it off this year; and 2) we have further settled into a new normal with dual worship and Sunday School which has allowed growth to be accommodated. Now is the time to look forward! Around the church you may have seen the signs What s Next? Where are we going? All of this is centered around the theme His Vision, Our Mission, four words that perfectly capture what our goal is this coming year. Everything begins and ends with discerning God s dream for our church and then placing ourselves in position to where it becomes a living reality. Make no mistake---if it is of God it will energize us, stretch us, and lift us up to a higher place. Ultimately, it will invite us all to be a part of a revolution and a movement of God s Spirit. The stakes could not be higher as our church is not positioned to take the next step forward. What will that be---your voice will provide the answer but only if you come out and make your voice count. My experience and my conviction is that when we are seized by a dream that is God-sized we do not find ourselves dreaming of a building. WE do not dream of an institution. We do not dream of a program. We do not dream of an organization, but instead we dream of what God might do with each of us in doing something that is doomed to fail except God be in it. In it all, transformation takes place and a new people and a new experience of God s power results and your life and our church s life is never the same. Saturday morning February 17 there will be a multigenerational gathering to discuss your sense of God s vision for our church. Then on May 19 there will be a churchwide Summit to bring consensus from every voice heard as to what we sense God s future story is for Wake Forest Baptist Church. As a side note I am particularly pleased that Experiencing God will be taught in adult Sunday School classes starting in January. This is a time tested transformative study that invites us to discern what God is up to and then how we can join in on it. This is exactly what His Vision Our Mission is all about come and join the revolution!! May God s will and God s dream be known and may we all be different and fuller people by joining in. Save the Dates: February 17 May 19 I invite you to put two dates on your calendar. On Bill Slater, Senior Pastor, bill.slater@wakeforestbaptistchurch.org Page 2
3 Education & Administration Beginning January 14, all adult classes will be studying the book, Experiencing God by Henry and Richard Blackaby. This study will run concurrently with our Long Range Planning Process for education and emphasis on seeking God s will. Our study will help to guide us in praying for and being sensitive to where God is leading us individually and where God is leading our church. If you are not in Sunday School on Sunday morning and would like to attend a class, there will also be a class on Wednesday night beginning January 10 at 6:20 PM. This will be a class for teachers, but also for anyone that is not able to attend an adult class for any reason. This class will run for 12 weeks just like the study on Sunday morning. Please sign up to attend. Wednesday Night Live Adult Study Groups Session 3: January 10 February 7 Experiencing God led by Jo Ann Stancil Prayer Time led by the Deacon Prayer Team Jeremiah: Raising Faith from the Fire led by Bill Slater Children s Sunday School Teacher Training led by Kathy Page Quilting Ministry led by Alice Leonard Martha Harmening is our teacher of the month. Martha has been a member of Wake Forest Baptist for 10 years. She and her husband, Rob, Martha Harmening have two children, Robert and Rebecca. Martha has been a faithful Sunday School Preschool Division Director for many of those 10 years. She has worked tirelessly to make the Preschool Sunday School run smoothly and efficiently. Martha serves many Sundays in place of sick or absent teachers so our preschoolers are safe and have a teacher. She has also worked with the church in planning Dual Sunday School. Martha, thank you for your hard and faithful work for our littlest members. We appreciate your hard work. We love and appreciate you. What is True? Save the Date! 2018 Women s Retreat April Camp Caraway, Asheboro It is time for us to prepare for our fifth women s retreat. This year our retreat will take place at Caraway Conference Center outside of Asheboro, North Carolina. We will be looking forward to time away from the busyness of life. We will have time to relax with friends, to share laughter, stories, and a few bites of chocolate. We will also have time to study God s word, sing His songs and pray with all our hearts. Registration forms are available in all foyers, online, and in the church office. An on-going objective of the library staff is to support other ministries of our church. Sometimes that ministry is a function of our diaconate. Recently they gathered material resources to aid members who are dealing with illnesses, deaths and emotional reactions. Those supportive aids are for individuals or large groups and are on display in the library. Additionally, there are several related books in the library's collection that deal with grief and family care-giving. An upcoming ministry of the diaconate will be a focus on the role of prayer in our congregational life. Opportunities to participate with them will be on Wednesday nights. Again the library contains a significant array of items to support this effort, more than twenty books about prayer that are for the young and the not-young. New additions are The Power of the Praying Wife and The Power of the Praying Husband! These resources are available for your use. Deposit due by February 18. Page 4
5 Music & Worship Ministry On January 10, the Kairos Singers 2nd through 6th grade will begin preparation for Table for Five...Thousand! a fully staged musical drama portraying the miracle of Jesus feeding the 5,000. The primary rehearsals will occur within our regular Wednesday evening Kairos ministry from January April. Here are a few dates to mark on our calendars: Saturday, March 10, 10:00 AM 12:00 PM Table for Five...Thousand BONUS REHEARSAL Friday, April 20, 6:00 8:00 PM Table for Five...Thousand Blocking Party Wednesday, May 2, 6:00 7:30 PM Table for Five...Thousand FINAL DRESS REHEARSAL Wednesday, May 9, 6:30 PM Table for Five...Thousand Performance More detailed information about drama parts, solos, auditions, attendance expectations, etc. will be sent electronically by January 10 to all families. Our Kairos Ministry offering Large Group, Puppets, Drumming, Orff, Chimes, and Missions will continue for our K-1st graders January April. Music and Missions will also continue for our 3 and 4 year olds and Pre-K children. All singers Grade 7 through age 97 are invited to share in the preparation and presentation of In His Own Words, a musical setting of nine of the most influential and significant words of Jesus Christ. Powerful texts such as the Great Commission, John 3:16, the great I am sayings and others are beautifully expressed through music written for choir and orchestra. Our goal is to have 100 singers share in this life-transforming ministry that will culminate with a performance of In His Own Words on Palm Sunday, March 25. We will sing most of the anthems during the weeks of Lent through Easter and Dr. Slater will be preaching a sermon series on these very important words of Christ. Additional devotional and study options will be offered for those who want to dig deeper into these great truths. If you have ever considered being a part of the Music Ministry this is the perfect opportunity! Students in grades 7 12 will prepare for In His Own Words through regular Youth Choir rehearsals each Sunday from 5:15 6:00 PM beginning January 7. We talk about FAITH in the safety of our homes and church, but do we equip our kids to live out their faith in their classrooms, soccer fields, baseball fields, dance studios, etc. Do they understand (at their level) what it means to be a faithful follower of Christ in their world? Join me for our What Exactly is this Thing Called Faith class offered to 4th, 5th, & 6th graders. This class will be great for those kids considering baptism! To register your child, Lisa Baker. Youth and friends of WFBC youth are invited to a Super Bowl Party in the youth center February 4 at 6:00 PM. Youth are asked to bring snacks, drinks, and a canned soup to donate to the church pantry. We hope you ll be able to join us for this fun time of fellowship! This is the FIRST in a series of articles for Grapevine that focus on Missions. Each will focus on one of the WFBC Missions, and will provide valuable information. Good Neighbor Ministry The Good Neighbor Ministry was begun twelve years ago as a direct result of a Youth Group member seeking to build enduring and useful relationships with the community. This Ministry provides fresh and lovingly prepared hot dogs with all the fixin's at lunch time nearly every Saturday at the Taylor Street Park (corner of Taylor Street and Juniper Street). Our youth knew that some of the youths and children in this area sometimes go all day or all weekend without having enough to eat. This Ministry provides about 120 hot dogs, water, and when in season, fresh vegetables from the community garden for youth, children and adults at no charge. The Ministry has two teams of volunteers: one to purchase the food items and stock them in the WFBC kitchen, and the other to cook and serve the food. The purchasing and stocking team is coordinated by John Frank, and is typically a four week rotation with each participant volunteering to do the buying and stocking one week out of four (requires about four volunteer families for the monthly rotation). The cooking and serving team is coordinated by Stacy Barrington, and is typically a thirteen week rotation with two participating families volunteering each Saturday to cook, transport, and serve the food (requires about 26 volunteer families for a complete rotation). The buying and stocking team makes sure all needed supplies are available in the WFBC kitchen before each Saturday. On each Saturday, the cooking and serving team meet at the church kitchen at about 9:00 to 9:30, cook the hotdogs and chili, pack them into the bun bags, and carry them along with the fixin's from the refrigerator to Taylor Street Park and begin serving the food by about 10:50am. They usually finish up by noon and return to the kitchen to clean up, which usually takes about 15 minutes. This Ministry is welcomed by the community, and has helped us to meet and relate with our neighbors around the park. Volunteer families enjoy the service and the relationships that are built through this Ministry. Currently we do need additional volunteer families for both teams: for more info or to volunteer for the buying and stocking team, please contact John Frank at jpfrank3@gmail.com; and, for more info or to volunteer for the cooking and serving team, please contact Stacy Barrington at s4barrington@yahoo.com Leah Harlow, leah.harlow@wakeforestbaptistchurch.org Page 9
