6 From Our Pastor Never Be The Same Matthew 26:73-74 After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, "Surely you are one of them, for your accent gives you away." 74 Then he began to call down curses on himself and he swore to them, "I don't know the man!" Immediately a rooster crowed. Acts 4:18-20 Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. 19 But Peter and John replied, "Judge for yourselves whether it is right in God's sight to obey you rather than God. 20 For we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard." In the two scriptures above, we see the extreme and obviously supernatural change of Peter s courage in only a few short weeks. What in the world could make a guy who, in one instance denied even knowing Jesus, transform into a guy who can t help proclaiming His name? Make no mistake about it. it wasn t a change of threat or environment that changed Peter s tune. In fact, in both instances, Peter s declarations that Jesus is the Son of God are both life-threatening situations. If it wasn t a change of environment, then what could it be? I d argue that the change happened internally with His Spirit life. You see, between Peter s denial and his declaration to never do it again, two very important events happened in his life that would change him forever. One, after his 3-time denial before the crucifixion of Jesus; Jesus Himself reaffirmed Peter as the rock on which the future church would be built. He was also involved in another amazing event. Peter was one of the 120 in that upper room that received a new and supernatural outpouring of the Holy Spirit. I think at the re-affirmation moment that Jesus restored him into relationship and hope. I think at the outpouring moment that Peter was filled with a new power to walk in courage like He had never known. The beauty of this story is that we can all receive what Peter received. When Jesus calls us His own at salvation, He is reminding us that no matter how often we ve failed Him; He is still willing to call us His own. At the moment we submit ourselves to His infilling Spirit, we receive the POWER never to deny again. In this crazy world, we will need both. When it happens, we will never be the same! Michael E.
