1 April 2014 The Haversack The Newsletter of the Sergeant Lawrence Everhart Chapter Maryland Society of the Sons of the American Revolution President s Message Compatriots, greetings and welcome to the first edition of the 2014 Haversack, our Chapter s first and foremost line of communication. Thus, I am leading off with our first Call to Duty; Compatriots, your presences is encouraged and very much needed at our April 9 th Semi-annual Chapter meeting; promise, it will be more entertaining, more social, and considerably shorter than similar gatherings have been in years past (read further in this edition for the pertinent details). Our newly formatted, less lengthy, and soon to be more frequently published Haversack reflects many of the positive program and process evaluations, course adjustments, leadership assignments, and outright priority changes that our chapter has undertaken; all necessary fine tunings to better fill and reposition the very big shoes left behind by our industrious immediate Past President and Secretary, Rick Stup. Our chapter-wide realignment was necessary to redistribute the work load of the largest, and said to be the most active and fastest growing, SAR Chapter in the State of Maryland, -- a realignment needed to better balance Chapter, State, and National needs against the wisdom, wishes, and availability of both the Compatriot and the financial resources of our Chapter. As you peruse this edition, please note the vision and accomplishments reflected in the mini-articles penned by the core of outstanding Officers, Chairmen, and Project Leaders that guide our Chapter. In particular, we are indebted to Compatriot Don Deering for serving as interim Chapter Secretary, as Chairman of our Membership Committee, as our 1 st Vice President, and as the leader of both our Chapter Color Guard and our Frederick Town Fife & Drum program; to Compatriot Patrick Boyton for taking on the awesome task of Editor and Chief of the Haversack; to our 2 nd vice President Pat Barron for leading the reorganization of our Awards Committee, and for representing our Chapter in a SAR/DAR tri-chapter endeavor to celebrate the 250 th Anniversary of the Repudiation Act, The Frederick Spark that Fired a Revolution. Please do not pass up the opportunity to volunteer your much needed and highly valued services to assist one or more of our officers, chairmen, and/or project leaders; help them in our efforts to maintain, promote, and advance the needs of your chapter, the MDSSAR, and the core values of the NSSAR. Finally, be sure to congratulate, thank and support our outstanding Chapter Compatriots who are representing you at the state level; MDSSAR President Elect Doug Favorite, Chancellor Chris May, Board of Managers Jack Schrodel, Sheldon Shealer, Gene Moyer, and Don Deering. George Lewis Compatriot & President Information Web Links: NSSAR Web Site: MDSSAR Web Site: Sergeant Lawrence Everhart Chapter Web Page: Sergeant Lawrence Everhart Chapter Events are posted on the MDSSAR Events Calendar. 2 Changes in Awards Process The Executive Committee has implemented a new procedure for nominating members and non-members for commendation by the Chapter. As the largest chapter in Maryland and with an ever increasing membership, it is essential that we develop organized approaches to our planning and business practices. One key element of our business is the special recognition we give to our compatriots and other deserving individuals in our community. A formal, documented process benefits the Chapter in several ways, including: assuring the Chapter is operating within the bounds of its delegated authority; codifying the process of nominating individuals for awards; providing a uniform tracking system for award nominations; assisting in the logistics of ordering awards from NSSAR; and, finally, providing a central repository for historical purposes. The Award Nomination and Chapter Approval Procedure will soon be available on the Sergeant Lawrence Everhart website. The form to be used for nominations will also be available for download. A copy of this procedure will be ed to all compatriots. For compatriots without internet access, a copy will be mailed to your home address. Contact Compatriot Pat Barron with questions at Executive Committee Update and Schedule of Meetings Your Executive Committee (EC) has been hard at work streamlining its format and mission. Beginning April 17th, 2014, EC meetings will be held the third Thursday of each month (6pm-7:30pm) at the Historical Society of Frederick County building. Everyone has a stake in keeping our Chapter vibrant and moving forward. All Chapter members are welcome and encouraged to participate in these meetings. Please note: only by-law, designated, Sergeant Lawrence Everhart Chapter Officers are allowed to vote on matters brought before the committee. Address: Historical Society of Frederick County 24 E Church Street, Frederick, MD Off street parking is available, next door, after 5pm, in the Winchester Hall parking lot and on the street in front of the Historical Society's building. Contact Compatriot Don Deering with questions at dadeering@comcast.net. Frederick Town Fife and Drum The following brief offers a summary of the Sergeant Lawrence Everhart Chapter's vision and goals regarding establishment of the Frederick Town Fife and Drum Corps (FTFD). The FTFD will be funded by our organization via contributions to our SAR Foundation Fund; a part of the Community Foundation of Frederick County. Our Chapter has created a partnership, with the parties listed below, to develop a revolutionary period fife and drum corps patterned after Colonial Williamsburg's renowned unit. We believe our corps performances will quickly provide the region with a widely recognized, historic image that fits perfectly with Frederick's Revolutionary War history. We are confident our performances and re-enactments, like Colonial Williamsburg's, will draw people to Frederick as well as surrounding jurisdictions, increasing tourism and benefiting local businesses and institutions. The corps' recognizable uniforms, exciting performances and popularity will become the face of our organization and synonymous with Frederick. This, in turn, will enable us to better acquire the funds to support the corps and better preserve Fredrick's unique history. It should be noted we continue to add community members and organizations to our partnership or "Planning Board" who are helping us design, develop and ultimately guide the corps. Our planning board currently includes: the Mayor's Office of Economic Development; Hood College; Fredrick County Public Schools; the Downtown Frederick Partnership; the Tourism Council of Frederick County; Frederick City Police and Sheriff s Departments; Maryland State Police, Historical Society of Frederick County; Mt. Olivet Cemetery; a local business owner and Colonial Williamsburg s Director of Revolutionary City Programs. Please note: Director Sutphin will be our Semi Annual Meeting's featured speaker. Don't miss this important event ( Dutch's Daughter, April 9, :30 AM - 1:30 PM). As we begin to publicize the corps and initiate our fundraising campaign, please consider supporting our chapter's cause by contributing to the Sergeant Lawrence Everhart (SAR )Foundation Fund in the name of the Frederick Town Fife and Drum. Contact Don Deering with questions at dadeering@comcast.net. Sergeant Lawrence Everhart Presentation Sergeant Lawrence Everhart: The Patriot will be the theme of Compatriot Jack Schrodel's presentation to the Middletown Valley Historical Society, on Wednesday, April 16, 7 PM, in the Chapel at Christ Reformed Church, 12 South Church Street, Middletown. Mr. Sutphin currently serves as Colonial Williamsburg's Director of Revolutionary City Programs and is a former member and director of the foundation's world renowned, Fife and Drum corps. It would be impossible to find anyone, who has visited Colonial Williamsburg, who has not been awed by the historical performances and reenactments that Mr. Sutphin has played a role in choreographing. We are most fortunate to have Mr. Sutphin as an adviser and working member of our own Frederick Town Fife and Drum Planning Board. As such, he will speak to the history, purpose and importance of these Revolutionary period musicians and how Frederick's corps will benefit our local and surrounding communities, our planning board partners, and the students who participate in this exciting opportunity to make a historic new beginning here in Fredrick.
