3 Looking for Dead Relatives Meet Harry Clark The Flagler Chapter continues to grow with new members. Our latest Compatriot is: Harry Gilman Clark, Jr. who was born in Potsdam, New York to Harry Gilman Clark Sr. and Marion Spring Clark. He spent his growing up years in Colton, New York, where he acquired his love for the outdoors and a great appreciation of nature. He earned an Associate Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the State University of New York at Canton; a Bachelor's Degree in Education from the State University of New York at Oswego and a Master's Degree in Education from the State University of New York at Potsdam. Compatriot David Kelsey and his wife Victoria vacationed in Connecticut this summer. While there, the two conducted extensive research on some of Dave's ancestors. Rather than spend time at the beach or sightseeing in the New England countryside, the couple spend a large portion of their time Harry held the position of Chief of Adult Inpatient Services visiting Cemeteries, Court Houses, Historical Societies and upon his retirement from the New York State Department of other genealogical sources. Mental Health after 32 years of service. Harry and his wife The trip was extremely beneficial to Dave's efforts to complete and submit supplemental applications to the S.A.R. Dawna have two daughters and three grandchildren, they enjoy every opportunity to be with them. He has been a true outdoorsman throughout his life, always enjoying hunting and fishing as well as playing music with a local group for several years. Harry's Patriot is Benjamin Cox Sr. Captain: Company of Rangers, Major Eben Allan's Detachment of Vermont Militia / and served in the Vermont General Assembly Grape Vine Chapter Registrar/Genealogist September Speaker Compatriot Bill Creager, Flagler Chapter's Registrar and Genealogist, was the speaker for the September Chapter meeting. It appears that while no one was looking Compatriot Jerry Service sold his house in Palm Coast Plantation and has moved out of town. Where Jerry went is still unknown but it is not a secret that he was hoping to move back to Jacksonville. Jerry, wherever you are, you will be missed and everyone wished you the best of luck. Compatriot David Kelsey reports that the State has made a partial Reimbursement to the Chapter for some of the medals that we have given to worthy individuals. Dave, who was attending the BOM and was not at the September meeting, will report on the details of the reimbursement at the October meeting. Compatriot Roger Kelly was unable to attend the September meetings. He advised that on September 7th, he will be taking the MCAT (Medical College Assessment Test) that day at noon in Orlando. Good Luck Roger! Our best wishes go to Gary Odendahl who also was unable to attend the September meeting. Gary is recovering from some complications resulting from a recent eye surgery. Get well soon Gary. Hope to see you in October. Page 3

4 George Washington Trivia by Washington Publishers George Washington, in fact, never chopped down a cherry tree. It was made up by a man named Mason Weems shortly after his death to show people how honest Washington was as a child. It is also said that George Washington threw a silver dollar across the Potomac River. First of all, the Potomac is over a mile long, and second, there were no silver dollars when he was a boy. George Washington is called the father of our country yet he never biologically fathered any children. However, he was a father for Martha s two children from a previous marriage as if they were his own. George Washington s annual salary as president was $25,000. He was first inaugurated at the age of 57. George Washington is the only president to be unanimously elected when he received all 69 electoral votes (1789). George Washington was the only president to be inaugurated in two cities, our nation s 1st capital, New York City, and our nation s 2nd capital, Philadelphia. Believe it or not, Washington had to borrow money to attend his own inauguration. In addition to having our nation s capital named after him, George also had the following named after him as well: 33 counties 7 mountains 9 colleges 121 post offices Washington had a history of dental problems. When he was 57 he had all of his teeth pulled out. Many have grown to believe over the years that he wore wooden dentures but that was not the case. In fact, his dentures were made from human or animal teeth and ivory or lead. George Washington was so much of an ice cream lover, he had ice-boxes kept full for his family and guests. They apparently ordered thousands of gallons over the years. George Washington was one of the tallest and largest presidents in George Washington made Thanksgiving a holiday in October of our countries history at 6 3 and more than 200 lbs with size He said it was to be observed on November 26. boots. 5 Questions and Answers Here are some questions have been purposed by new members that we would like to try and answer Q: I have noticed that at the Chapter meetings some members wear the SAR badge attached to a ribbon around the neck. Can anyone wear this badge? A: The answer is both a yes and a no. The Membership Badge may be worn by all members in good standing of the SAR. The badge is available through the SAR store in both a regular and miniature size. The member's national number is engraved on the eagle on the larger badge at no extra cost. Now the no part of the answer. The wearing of the badge on the neck ribbon is reserved for current and past Chapter Presidents. All other members can wear their badge on the jackets or shirts. It comes with a short breast ribbon and pin. Q: What is the Membership Rosette and when and where should it be worn? A: The rosette is the only official recognized lapel pin that may be worn informally to signify membership in the Sons of the American Revolution. Most SAR members wear the rosette whenever they wear their suit or sports jackets. The colors of the Rosette are the same colors of General George Washington's uniform. Q: I have heard members talk about Supplemental's. What are they? A: In order to become a member of the SAR you had to submit and have approved an application, with documentation, proving that you were a direct descendant of someone who contributed to the American cause during the Revolution. Many members actually have more than one Patriot and the SAR welcomes the submission of additional applications, with documentation, from established members. These applications are called Supplemental Applications. The fees to register these additional Patriots is substantially lower than the first application and if approved, you will receive an additional certificate for each new Patriot. Q: I see that some members who wear the neck ribbon have stars on their ribbons. What's that all about? A: The gold stars that you are seeing can be worn on the breast ribbon or the Official neck ribbon for each approved supplemental ancestor. One star for each additional Patriot. For multiple Supplemental Patriots there are star with the number 5 in the center. Each of these represent five Supplemental Patriots. Q: If I wanted to buy some SAR Merchandise where can I get it? A: That's an easy one. Go to the SAR web page, under the heading Compatriots you will find the link to the SAR store. Q: Does the SAR have a Handbook? A: Yes, a rather large one at that. It comes in three volumns and it is available on the National SAR web page. Simply go to the web page and under the heading Compatriots click on SAR Handbook. Q: I know that there will be annual dues but when are they due and how are they paid? A: Each Chapter is required to collect the annual dues from their member usually during the month of November of each year. Our Chapter will send out due notices advising of the amount due and an address where the dues are to be sent. When all dues are received, they are forwarded to the State and the State sends National their portion. We ask all members to be prompt in dues payment as delays cause lots of problems for everyone.
