1 American Legion Post 80 February 1, 2014 Issue 2 of Pennsylvania Ave., St. Cloud, FL Website: AmericanLegionPost80fl.org Commander s Newsletter Greetings Legion Family, Did anyone notice how quick January went by? Has everyone gotten over the cold weather? Like they say, "if you don't like the weather in Florida wait till tomorrow, it will change. If you weren't at our New Years Eve Party, you missed out on a good time bringing in the New Year. The band was a local band that most folks have seen around town called Train Wreck. Everyone was complimenting them and I was advised, that although the crowd was small, everyone had a great time bringing in the New Year American Legion style! February is upon us and although it is a relatively slow time of the year for American Legion activities (ex: parades and patriotic services), some very important things will be taking place at your Post which will require your participation. Before I get started, let me first thank our Riders Director, Ed Falkowski, and Assistant Director, Chris Falkowski, for a great District Ride-in on January 11th. We all had great fellowship with our AL Riders from all over Central Florida. I would like to thank all of our Post, Auxiliary, SAL, and Riders who participated on Sunday, February 26th in the 6th District Bowling Tournament to benefit Boys/Girls State transportation cost. A fun time was had by all. This year we had some good bowlers. We'll find out sometime within the next couple of weeks if we got the coveted District Trophy back. If you remember, we held the title of District Champs for 2011 & 2012 and lost it in On Thursday, February 13 at 7:00 PM at our American Legion Post 80 General Membership Meeting, nominations for Officers for the 2014/2015 year will be taken. Nominations will be made for the position of Post Commander, 1st Vice Commander, 2nd Vice Commander, Chaplain, Sgt-at-Arms and Executive Committee. As a Veteran and member of our American Legion Post, your attendance is imperative. Nominations will be taken from the floor or from the Post Officers. The person being nominated, if present, needs to verbally accept the nomination. If that person is not at the meeting, they must deliver to the Post a written acceptance letter. All nominators and nominees must show their 2014 membership I.D. card at the time of nominations and acceptances. Nominations will be held during each Post General Membership Meeting, with the voting taking place by ballot at the Post the day of the May 2014 Post General Membership Meeting. Only Post members with a current 2014 membership card will be allowed to vote. We, as a family, need to take part in this vital endeavor. Remember the Post Executive Committee meeting will be held on Monday, February 3rd at 7:00 PM. In service to our Veterans and our Post family, Daryl Bass Commander Post 80 District 6 Sgt-at-Arms American Legion Department of Florida Chaplain s Corner Greetings in the name of our awesome God. This month we celebrate Valentine's Day - a day when people attempt to show love to that special person in their life. We use different ideas to demonstrate our love. I like what the Bible says in Romans 5:8, "But God demonstrates His own love toward us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." Scripture also tells us that, "Greater love has no one than to lay down his life for his friends" (I John 15:13). So we see that God loves us, not in words only, but also by His actions. We should do the same. "Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God, and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love, does not know God, for God is love" (I John 5:7-8). If you need to speak to the Chaplain, please call For God and Country, Chaplain Dave Nigh

American Legion Auxiliary Mission: In the spirit of service, not self, the mission of the American Legion Auxiliary is to support The American Legion and to honor the sacrifice of those who serve by enhancing the lives of our veterans, military, and their families, both at home and abroad. For God and Country, we advocate for veterans, educate our citizens, mentor youth, and promote patriotism, good citizenship, peace and security. January's RoadKill Bingo and Dinner was a huge success! Thank you to Judy, Rita, and Charlyn for the awesome dinner and service. Also, a big thank you to all of the Auxiliary members and Legion Family who helped with both the dinner and RoadKill Bingo! Thanks to all who helped with the Legion Riders 6th and 12th District Ride-in on January 11 th. It was a lot of fun. It is always great to be a part of the Legion Family events. Mark your calendars for our next meeting: February 6, 2014 at 7:00pm in the Civic Hall. Thursday, We will be holding our annual Valentines Day Dinner and Dessert Auction on Friday, February 14 th. We will be serving a Surf and Turf dinner from 5:00 to 8:00pm. Entertainment will be provided by our own Cindy Hoover (Galaxy Blue Productions) from 6:00-11:00pm. The Dessert Auction will start at 7:00pm. With that said, we are in need of desserts to auction. So come on out and bring your dessert specialty to be auctioned off! All proceeds from this event will be donated to Special Olympics. We also have a beautiful basket filled with special items for Valentines Day being raffled off, so stop by the Post and get your raffle ticket from the bartender! The raffle will be drawn on Valentines Night! We will be celebrating Auxiliary Members with February Birthdays on Friday, February 21 st at 6:30pm, so come down to the Post and celebrate with friends! Our next major events will be in March. We will be having our Auxiliary RoadKill Bingo and dinner on Saturday, March 15 th and our St. Patrick's Day Dinner on Monday, March 17 th from 5:00pm to 7:00pm. Since this falls on Monday Bingo night, we are going to need LOTS of volunteers for this event! young men and women. Some of the items that we need are: razors, small shampoos, toothpaste, toothbrushes, mouthwash, shaving cream, snacks, books and games. Most importantly, we are in need of names of men and women who are currently deployed. We only have one name right now, and we will be sending items to he and his unit. The others whom we have been sending to are scheduled to come home. So, if you know of anyone currently deployed, please give their address to Brenda Breaker or Lady George, as they are the ones who have been coordinating our Troop Box program, along with the help of some of our Auxiliary volunteers. We plan to send out more boxes in February. Thank you to all who have helped us with this project with donations for postage as well as supplies! We thank you again for your support! We are still in need of volunteers for Monday Night Bingo. Also remember that in all of our bingos (Mondays and Sundays) if you bring in an item for the Troop Boxes or food pantry, you will receive a free Speedball card on Monday nights and a free card on Sundays. I have used this article in the Newsletter before, but I believe that every once in a while it serves as a reminder as to what the American Legion Auxiliary is all about. From the May 2012 Auxiliary Magazine: We all have choices for how we spend our time. There is a lot of competition for our every waking minute. We choose to belong to the American Legion Auxiliary, or any organization, for one of two reasons-either we find the experience personally rewarding, or we are so proud of what we see being accomplished by the organization that we want to be associated with it and support those who are actively involved. Whether you belong for personal fulfillment or pride, our membership is an investment in mission. Our mission is big. We are committed to a calling larger than self. If you are not receiving my s, please me at cmbass43@hotmail.com so that I can add you to my contacts. For God and Country, Charlotte Bass President, Unit 80 Auxiliary District 6 Chairman of Children and Youth Department of Florida, American Legion Phone number Remember, you can also follow us on Facebook at American Legion Auxiliary Unit 80 St. Cloud, FL.
3 Page 3 Website: AmericanLegionPost80fl.org American Legion Post 80 Auxiliary Chaplain s Report Sons of the American Legion (S.A.L.) Happy Valentines day to all! Here it is, time for another newsletter! Hard to believe another month has passed us by. I really wish they would slow down. It has been pretty quiet this past month, although we do have some special people who need our prayers. Mona Skidgell will be having surgery on her kidney on Feb. 3 rd. This surgery is very serious, but we know that God will see her through and not to mention those of us who know Mona know that she is a strong willed woman who can do anything, so please keep her in prayer. I haven't seen Margaret Harber, but I have been sending cards to her. We miss her, but she is getting stronger every day. Also, I saw Beth Steinberg today and she told me that her mother, Harriet Steinberg, who is also a member has been in ICU in the Kissimmee hospital but is doing better. So please keep her and Beth in your prayers, too. Now for those who are in the nursing homes: Polly Weddle and Beverly Thomas, they are ok and doing well. Polly has been moved to another room, 215, it is a lot nicer then the one she was in. So please stop by to see them if you get a chance. Greetings all! Well, we made it through the holidays. Now it s just cold weather for a couple months. If you have been to the Post, you have seen that the S.A.L. has a three wheel bike up for raffle. We will announce the winner on St. Patrick s Day. Tickets are only $5 for 10 tickets, so get some chances! We are offering roses for Valentines Day at some really good prices: 1 for $5; 3 for $10; 6 for $18; 12 for $24. Don t forget your Sweetie-pie! Please see me or another S.A.L. member or a Bartender for tickets. We will have them available Thursday and Friday, Feb. 13 th and 14 th, for pick-up. For God and Country and Children, George Campbell S.A.L. Commander Post 80 Bowling I do hope that if anyone needs me they know that all they have to do is call. My number is Just leave a message, and I will get back with you as soon as possible. Safe travels to all who are going on the cruise. Hoping you have a great trip. Remember, be kind to one another, let someone know you care about them and trust in God, for all things are possible if you put God in your life. Please pray for our troops and their families and let us never forget that our freedom comes with a price. God Bless America and God Bless our troops! Until next month, take care! God Bless America, Becky Adams Chaplain, Auxiliary Unit 80 Service Officer Report I have been working on all the new information and forms for 2014 in order to keep you up-to-date.
