To invesigae, researchers conduced invasive plan surveys on and around 127 Marcellus shale gas well pads and adjacen access roads in seven sae fores disrics in he Allegheny Naional Fores. Sudy sies were disribued across he Allegheny High Plaeau, which is dominaed by mixed-oak and Norhern hardwood foress; he Pisburgh Plaeau; and he Ridge and Valley regions of cenral Pennsylvania, dominaed by mixed-oak foress. Sixy-one percen of pads had a leas one invasive, non-naive plan species, and 19 percen of hose had hree or more species. Reed canary grass, spoed knapweed, creeping hisle, Japanese silgrass and crown vech were he mos common invasives found. The sudy provides sriking evidence ha invasive plan presence on well pads is correlaed wih he lengh of ime since pad consrucion; he number of wells drilled per pad; invasive plan abundance on adjacen well pad access roads; and he densiy of roads in he area of he pad prior o consrucion. Using field daa from he 127 well pads, researchers creaed a model o evaluae direc and indirec relaionships beween mechanisms and condiions ha could accoun for invasive plan presence. Surrounding plan communiies were also surveyed on a randomly seleced se of 32 well pads in he sudy. Nonnaive plan cover was greaer on he disurbed well pad edges han in he surrounding plan communiies.
