R. Workshops and Members/ Officers Society News 8-11 Announcements On Saturday, August 6, 2011, T.S.C.A.R. held its annual workshop at the Brentwood library. The event was hosted by Catherine Walton, State President and Anne Bush, Senior State President. The day began with registration and a state board meeting prior to the day s activities. Members began the packet meeting with an ice breaker of introducing themselves, stating the society they were from and something interesting about themselves. Catherine gave reports on her trip to Washington D.C. where she was sworn in as Tennessee's new State President. She told the members about National President Mary Lib Schmidt s theme Living the American Dream and her project, The Fisher House. Catherine announced her state theme, Picturing the Past and project, restoring John Overton s family portraits. Catherine reported on her trip to Lexington, KY to attend the Mid-Southern regional meeting in July. The Officers and Chairmen gave great presentations on National Packet Programs by using creative posters, fun skits, and power point presentations. T.S.C.A.R. is off to a good start with officers and chairmen being able to take back this information for their own society meetings. The members had fun in standing up each time Living the American Dream was mentioned and receiving candy from Catherine. The meeting adjourned early and everyone enjoyed a pizza lunch

Family, National President Mary Lib Schmidt and Sr. National President Ann Schaffer have developed an exceptional program this year as witnessed by the presentations at the summer packet meeting. I hope everyone who attended found ideas and inspiration for Living the American Dream. N.S.C.A.R. continues to change and this requires us to constantly check the website for news and resources. It takes a team effort to do so much in C.A.R. and that was evident at the summer packet meeting. State President Catherine Walton did an excellent job presiding over the meeting. I urge all members to support her state theme, Picturing the Past, and her state project, restoring the John Overton Family portraits. I was impressed by the quality of our membership, the dedication demonstrated to our societies and the diversity of experiences and backgrounds we have within our organization. Members and seniors need to work together to create and carry out everything from programs and projects to events and meetings. We need each other in this process. As the Mission Statement reads, one of our goals is to develop leaders and I believe we are off to a good start. Senior leaders should be there to show the way and not get in the way. The programs and projects as well as the meetings and events should be fun, productive and successful. As the Children of the American Revolution, we honor their dream and their bravery, but their dream and their fight for America did not end in the time of the American Revolution.

3 VOLUME LVIII, ISSUE 2 THE LIBERTY BELL PAGE 3 Living the American Dream. The National Theme for the N.S.C.A.R. year is Living the American Dream. Our Founding Fathers had a dream for what they wanted America to become, and great risk came with the action on that dream for them and everyone else who gave aid to the American Revolution. As the Children of the American Revolution, we honor their dream and their bravery, but their dream and their fight for America did not end in the time of the American Revolution. We carry with us today the same core values of their dream of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. What better way is there to honor their dream than by supporting those who defend that dream today? Thanks to the brave men and women of our Armed Forces, we are able to be Living the American Dream. This year our National Project is to raise funds for the Fisher House Foundation. The Fisher House Foundation builds "comfort homes" on the grounds of major military and Veterans Affairs medical centers. These homes are made available for families of those being treated to stay free of charge, allowing them to be close to their loved ones in their time of need. For more information visit the Fisher House website at Mary Lib Schmidt, National President Picturing the Past Tennessee State Project This year s State Project is to raise funds to aid in the restoration of family portraits of Mary McConnell Overton and her children at Travellers Rest Plantation. Travellers Rest is the home of Judge John Overton, a trusted friend and advisor to Andrew Jackson as well as a Tennessee lawyer, jurist, banker and political leader. Travellers Rest was built in 1799 by the then bachelor Judge Overton. In 1820, he married Mary McConnell May, a widow and mother of five children. The couple later went on to have three children of their own. The portraits of Mrs. Overton and her children have just been donated to the house by the May family. These portraits are in need of restoration before they can be viewed by the public. By providing aid to restore these portraits, we are in turn helping to preserve the past. Both paintings and photographs serve as gateways to different places and times. They reflect the progression of civilization while serving as a reminder that all things change but should not be forgotten. These portraits give us a glimpse into the lives of this historic and locally prominent family that helped shape both Tennessee and the country. Membership Chair Stones River Society QUESTION: What is the oldest patriotic organization for young people in the United States? No, it s not the Boy Scouts or the Girl Scouts! It s not the 4-H either! It s the Children of the American Revolution! NEXT QUESTION: Name an organization in which youth gain leadership experience, learn parliamentary procedures and serve as delegates before local, state and national conferences? That s right! Through the Children of the American Revolution! AND YOUR FINAL QUESTION is. How can a young person really get involved in helping others who are less fortunate and who really need our help? By JOINING the Children of the American Revolution! I am really fired up about our new membership challenge! The National Society of C.A.R. has a goal of having 11,000 members by 2012! Just think, that would be 11,000 young people like you and I who will have a solid understanding of what it means to be an American! That includes learning how to appreciate your grandparents, great grandparents, and many great great grandparents who were so brave in helping our country become such a great place to live! That also means there would be 11,000 young people who grow into caring and giving adults who grew up helping children in poverty and underprivileged schools and homes, who give books to children who don t have any, and who are always on the lookout for ways to help people! What a great way to learn to live! If each member in our local societies could invite just ONE friend to come to a meeting and think about joining, we could reach our goal. Ask your moms and dads for the names of people in the D.A.R. and the S.A.R societies and then seek ways to invite their children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews to join in your meetings! If they can just see some of the wonderful things that C.A.R. promotes, they will definitely want to become part of this organization! Let s all do our part to reach out to potential new members and make C.A.R known to everyone!

Elizabeth Paxton Houston Society Children of the American Revolution (C.A.R.) and their sponsoring DAR Chapter Mary Blount participated in the 41st Annual 4th of July celebration at James White Fort in Knoxville organized by the Stephen Holston Chapter Sons of the American Revolution. Members of the C.A.R. participated in reading the names of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence and Vice President Dylan Moya gave greetings for the C.A.R. Madeline and Elizabeth Titlow, whose C.A.R. papers are pending, attended their first C.A.R. function. After the ceremony, the EPH Society was given the huge, tattered USA flag that had flown over the fort to be retired at the next C.A.R. Flag Day Retirement Ceremony. The event was held at the gravesite of Captain William Driver, the man who coined the phrase Old Glory. He was a ship captain who always had an American flag with him on his journeys.

9 V OLU ME LV I I I, IS SUE 2 T HE LIBERT Y BELL PAGE 9 Good Ship Adventure Good Ship Adventure Society attended the DAR s Flag Day ceremony at the Nashville City Cemetery. The meeting was put on by the Davidson County DAR Regents Council. While at the event, GSA members heard from George Miller on The Ultimate Sacrifice. The event was held at the gravesite of Captain William Driver, the man who coined the phrase Old Glory. He was a ship captain who always had an American flag with him on his journeys. Several of his descendents were at the ceremony, and the CAR members present were able to have a picture taken with Captain Driver s descendents. Good Ship Adventure Society President Mary Kathryn Charlton and Good Ship Adventure Senior President Cindy Charlton were honored with the opportunity to sew a stitch on the National 9/11 Flag while the flag was on display in Nashville the weekend before the Fourth of July. The National 9/11 Flag was found in the rubble after the aftermath of the attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, The flag is being gradually repaired and includes a patch from the flag that President Lincoln rested on after being shot at Ford s Theater. Though the flag is currently on tour across the country, it will finally reside in New York City at the National September 11 Memorial Museum. Good Ship Adventure Society President Mary Kathryn Charlton attended Volunteer Girls State earlier in the summer. While there, she attended many sessions to learn about state and local government, and she was elected mayor of her city and also voted Best Citizen of her city. GSA President Mary Kathryn Charlton was honored to be appointed the Chaplain for the MidSouthern Region this year. She led many prayers as Chaplain. By attending the MidSouthern Regional Meeting in Lexington, Kentucky, Mary Kathryn was blessed to meet fellow CAR members from across the country and saw some very interesting skits on the National Programs. While in Lexington, Mary Kathryn also went to the Kentucky Horse Park with CAR members, including current TSCAR President Catherine Walton and past TSCAR President Alisha Adams. It was such a good experience, and Mary Kathryn looks forward to attending next year s Mid-Southern Regional Meeting in Virginia!

While there GSA members learned about TSCAR President Catherine Walton s project of Picturing the Past and how she wants to raise money to restore historical portraits of Mrs. Overton of Travellers Rest and her family. GSA members also presented many NSCAR programs as state officers and as committee chairmen. By the end of the day, GSA members had learned a lot, and the fun concluded with a yummy lunch of pizza. Matthew Fontaine Maury Members of the Matthew Fontaine Maury Society are shown at Franklin City Hall with one of the 9/11 flags given to the Franklin Police Department and the Franklin Fire Department by the Old Glory Chapter of the DAR. The flag was designed by a member of the DAR and are produced by the DAR. The symbols include the Twin Towers, the Liberty Bell (representing the field near Shanksville, PA), and the Pentagon, all sites of major destruction and loss of life. These flags commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the 9/11 attack and were given by the Old Glory Chapter in memory of all who lost their lives that day and in memory of the first responders who gave their lives to save others that day, and in honor of the men and women of the Franklin Police and Fire Departments who protect and save lives today. Rudy Honorary Senior State President Jeanette C. Rudy and a supporter of T.S.C.A.R. and N.S.C.A.R. died on August 13, 2011. Mrs.

She served as the 1974 1976 Tennessee Senior State President and then as Senior National Vice President of the MidSouthern Region. Her involvement in C.A.R. continued over four decades.

For many years, she served as a T.S.C.A.R. Senior Officer and Chairman and as an Honorary Senior National Vice President. She and her husband, Dan, were Life Promoters #131 and #252.

Her love and concern for young people was evident in her numerous philanthropic activities, which will influence young people and society for years to come.

Arriving from Lawrence County were current and former State Officers and Chairman Emily Brewer, John Calvin Bryant, Cacey Shelton, Tori Bryant and Caitlyn Shelton. Jeanette C. Rudy Honorary Senior State President Jeanette C. Rudy and a supporter of T.S.C.A.R. and N.S.C.A.R. died on August 13, Mrs. Rudy, who did not have any children, was a great friend to young people and believed in supporting youth activities in many areas. She served as the Tennessee Senior State President and then as Senior National Vice President of the MidSouthern Region. Her involvement in C.A.R. continued over four decades. She and her close friend Nancy Griswold attended many Tennessee State Conferences and Mid-Southern Regional Meetings as they continued to encourage new members and assist in guiding the organization. For many years, she served as a T.S.C.A.R. Senior Officer and Chairman and as an Honorary Senior National Vice President. She and her husband, Dan, were Life Promoters #131 and #252. She established the T.S.C.A.R. Daniel Cleeves Rudy Endowment Fund in support of Tamassee and served as the Senior State Chairman. Her love and concern for young people was evident in her numerous philanthropic activities, which will influence young people and society for years to come. She was an avid wildlife conservationist and hunter and an accomplished trap shooter. Under Governor Phil Bredesen, she had the honor and pleasure to serve as a commissioner of the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. Her wide spread influence was shown by the organizational representatives attending her funeral, which included the bald eagle Challenger, who has flown at numerous sporting events and has been at N.S.C.A.R. National Convention. Mrs. Rudy seemed to always know when someone needed just the extra boost at a special time in their life. Honorary State Presidents John Griswold and Andrew Peercy plus other Honorary State Presidents and C.A.R. members who had Mrs. Rudy as a Senior and most importantly as a friend may remember the honor of receiving a pin or other acknowledgement at a C.A.R. banquet but most of all they will remember a lady who was interested in young people and their future and who gave a willing hand and a smile of encouragement.
