The event was hosted by Laura Bush, State President and Anne Bush, Senior State President. The day began with registration and a state board meeting prior to the day s activities. Before the meeting began, members made cards for our service men and women in appreciation of their service to our country. Laura reported on her trip to the Great Lakes Regional meeting in Lafayette, IN. She told the members about National President Greg Thorne s theme Saratoga: The Beginning and his project is to raise funds for the Sword Surrender Site Project at Saratoga National Park. This project will include a bas-relief sculpture, memorial, walk-ways, and interpretive signage. The basis of this project is the famous painting, The Surrender of General Burgoyne, by John Trumbull. Laura announced her state theme, Fort Nashborough: the Beginning and project is to raise funds for the restoration of Fort Nashborough. Laura also had pins made depicting a log cabin which she was selling for $5 a piece to help raise funds for the state project. The Officers and Chairmen gave great presentations on the National Packet Programs by using creative posters, fun skits, and power point presentations. T.S.C.A.R. is off to a good start with officers and chairmen being able to take back this information for their own society meetings. Members from ten societies attended the meeting. The members had fun by standing up each time Saratoga: The Beginning was mentioned and receiving candy from Laura. The meeting adjourned early and everyone enjoyed a pizza lunch.

2 PAGE 2 THE LIBERTY BELL VOLUME LVIV, ISSUE 2 LETTERS FROM THE STATE PRESIDENT AND SENIOR Dear C.A.R. members, Thank you for coming to the summer packet meeting. It was great to see everyone again. I was impressed by the quality of all the presentations and I hope everyone had fun. I have been busy representing T.S.C.A.R. In June my mother and I traveled to Lafayette, IN to attend the Great Lakes Regional meeting. They kept us busy with meetings and fun activities to learn about the new National programs. In August, I attended two DAR workshops and had two displays. The DAR ladies were interested in hearing about everything our societies do. They are supportive of our state project of raising funds for Ft. Nashborough s restoration. Let s ring the Liberty Bell at the State Capitol on Sunday, September 23. Laura Bush State President Dear C.A.R. Family: The summer packet meeting was a great success. We had over 50 people attending from ten societies! Thank you to all who participated in the meeting and for being well prepared in your presentations. On Saturday August 11, Laura and I attended the DAR workshop in Jackson, TN. The C.A.R. had two displays. One was of all the societies in TN and the other was of the state project, raising funds for the restoration of Fort Nashborough. We also attended the DAR workshop in Murfreesboro on August 25. Fort Nashborough pins were sold at both events. We were well received by the DAR and received many compliments on our displays. We enjoyed bragging about the work that our societies are doing in the community. We hope to see you at the DAR Constitution Day Bell Ringing on September 23. Join us after the bell ringing for a joint meeting of the different societies. Anne Bunyan Bush Senior State President

5 VOLUME LVIV, ISSUE 2 THE LIBERTY BELL PAGE 5 Catherine Hughes (12), C.A.R. Life Member in Col. Return Jonathan Meigs Society, Chattanooga, TN donated her hair to "Locks of Love", a public non-profit organization that provides highest quality hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the U.S. & Canada under age 21 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. This is Kids Helping Kids program because 80% of the donors are children. Locks of Love provides a free, custom, vacuum fitted hairpiece made entirely from donated human hair that would retail between $3,500 to $6,000. The vacuum fit forms a vacuum seal, like a suction cup and is designed just for children who have experienced a total loss of scalp hair; the wig does not require the use of tape or glue which could irritate the scalp. Only the wearer of the hairpiece may remove it by breaking the vacuum seal at the temples. Nobody can snatch the hairpiece from the scalp; the child can swim, shower, and do gymnastics. Each bundle of hair arrives long so the recipient may style it to fit their face. Catherine has such thick hair she donated two ponytails 10 long to make two hairpieces. locksoflove.org News Article Submitted by: Leslie Myers; state treasurer Age: 13 Recently I was able to attend a meeting and meet Congress woman Diane Black. This was exciting to me because I know what our ancestors went through in order for us to have the right to vote. I was the youngest person there. I want to encourage all that are 18 and older to get out in November and vote. It doesn't matter which candidate you choose, it is your vote, use it. This is a way to have your voice heard. If you are not 18, go with an adult that is voting. I go with my mom all the time and have even been in the "booth" with her. She has shown me the way the ballot works and then lets me hit the VOTE button. It doesn't seem like much at the time, but it is great fun to see who wins at the end of the night. I have a better understanding of how changes are made now. Mark the date, research why it is called "Super Tuesday." A Message from your Historian Melissa Bush, T.S.C.A.R. Historian, needs pictures and articles from every society for the scrap book. In order to save the societies money, please include this address annetscar@yahoo.com when you send your pictures and articles to the Liberty Bell.

L to R: Benjamin Dammann, Community Projects; Ava Scotchie, Flag Chairman; Rachel Hood, Treasurer; Allison Cook, Secretary; Olivia Scotchie, Chaplain; Samuel Hood, Vice President; Ashleigh Cook - President Col RJ Meigs members Olivia and Ava Scotchie presented a program on the Fisher House to Chickamauga DAR Chapter in June. The girls researched the Fisher House Foundation as part of the CAR National Project for The program included information on how the Foundation started, who the Fisher Family is and the purpose of the Foundation. Pictures of those who have benefitted from Fisher Houses across the country were included. They reminded DAR members that a Fisher House will be built in Murfreesboro and the groundbreaking ceremony happened this summer. Col RJ Meigs members and guests visit Eagle Point Railroad on Fredonia Mountain. Six Society members, six prospective members, three seniors and eight guests had fun riding the miniature railroad through the wooded mountain on almost 20 miles of track. The trains are 17% to scale and are built by the Chattanooga Society of Model Engineers. There are 15 trestles and 15 small bridges including a working drawbridge. The history of trains and their part in how early American moved westward was included in the interesting program.

7 VOLUME LVIV, ISSUE 2 THE LIBERTY BELL PAGE 7 Col Return Jonatan Meigs, continued Col RJ Meigs Society Members Ava and Olivia Scotchie handed out programs at the Brainerd Mission Cemetery Flag Raising Ceremony in June. During this annual event the Flag of the USA is replaced by helping JROTC cadets. Also flying at the cemetery are the flags of the Eastern and Western Bands of the Cherokee Nation. The Brainerd Mission Cemetery in Chattanooga is the only indicator that the Brainerd Mission ever existed. Now a part of the infamous Trail of Tears and the Glory Road Religion Trail, the cemetery is listed on the National Register of Historic places and has been deemed a site of national significance. The Brainerd Mission is where Cherokee Indians were educated and taught the ways of the "white man". The curriculum used ensured that the children would be steeped in Christianity and receive a classical education. The American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions was founded in 1810, and was tasked with the creation and running of the Brainerd Mission. The mission was in operation from 1817 until the Cherokee Indians were removed by the U.S. government in Today, all that remains of the mission is the Brainerd Mission Cemetery. Rachel, Sarah, & Samuel Hood of Col. Return Jonathan Meigs Society Chattanooga, TN, visited their father and CAR Senior, John, in Germany where he is in school at the Wacker Chemical Corp. Wacker, based in Munich, Germany, is building a $1.5 billion hyperpure polysilicon plant in Charleston, TN; hyperpure polysilicon is used primarily in solar panels for generating electricity from sunlight. The Hoods had a wonderful time touring for 3 weeks in July with one of their favorite places visited being Neuschwansein Castle built by King Ludwig II ( ) of Bavaria. The Castle sits high on a mountain overlooking the Village of Hohenschwanger, Bavaria. Neuschwanstein Castle is marvelously spectacular and was used as the model for Cinderella's Castle at Disney World. 10 PAGE 10 THE LIBERTY BELL VOLUME LVIV, ISSUE 2 Matthew Fountaine Maury Members of Matthew Fontaine Maury participated in Ring the Bells for 1812 on July 18 th in Franklin to commemorate the Bicentennial of the signing of the Declaration of War with Great Britain by President James Madison. Church bells were rung at downtown Five Points at the Historic Franklin Presbyterian Church, St. Paul s Episcopal Church, and Franklin First United Methodist Church. Joining in the ringing were members of the Old Glory Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and members of The National Society of Colonial Dames in Tennessee. After ringing the bells, the members met and learned about the War of 1812 and why this date was being remembered. The National Society United States Daughters of 1812 encouraged patriotic groups to ring bells nationwide to remember that the war for independence from Great Britain which began with the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776 was finally settled with the War of The outcome of the war allowed for westward expansion during the 19 th Century, established the United States and Canadian border, and resulted in a peaceable relationship between the English, the Canadians, and the Americans. Matthew Fontaine Maury members gathered for a pool party at the home of Carol and Todd Moss in College Grove to kick off their year on Sunday, August 5 th. Several prospective members came to the party. Following a fun afternoon of swimming, they all enjoyed a cookout with hot dogs and hamburgers. Shown enjoying the pool are: Miller Garrett, Jack Butler, Levi Moss, Alexander Walker, Olivia Moss, Thomas Fields, and Elaina Fields. MFM member Miller Garrett and his grandmother, Mrs. Lynn Garrett-Moss attended a naturalization ceremony in July to welcome new citizens at the U.S. Courthouse in Columbia with Mrs. Marcia Fraser, Americanism Chairman for the Old Glory Chapter. They handed out American flags and cards with The Pledge of Allegiance and The American s Creed.

Pinson Mounds Society participated in City Councilman Ernest Brooks II and the City of Jackson s Health and Sanitation Department s third annual E-cycle. Laptops, CPUs, computer monitors, keyboards, scanners, printers, toner cartridges, modems, speakers, power cords, cables, fax machines, DVD players, VCRs, PDAs, cell phones and chargers are collected in order to keep the hazardous waste materials out of the landfills. Pinson Mounds collected 5 computer processors, 1 stereo receiver, 3 printers, 2 keyboards, 2 computer mice, 1 set of speakers, 1 fax modem, 1 laptop, 3 monitors and 5 cordless phones for this event and is currently still collecting these items for recycling. The newest member of Pinson Mounds Society, Alyvia Baxter, pictured right, participated in her school s Patriotic Parade on June 28, She and the other children from First Baptist Church Jackson dressed in red, white and blue as they celebrated the birth of America. At our August society meeting we discussed the Battle of Saratoga and how it was the Turning Point in the war. The children designed a poster about the importance of the Battle of Saratoga and the important military leaders that took place in the Battle. A pamphlet designed by the society about these military leaders was passed out to the members and seniors in attendance. 12 PAGE 12 THE LIBERTY BELL VOLUME LVIV, ISSUE 2 Rocky Mountain Rocky Mount Society members say there are plenty of things to do in Upper East Tennessee in the summer. Michael Wimberley, age 5, says he liked the race car exhibit near Gatlinburg. Hannah Elliott (14) says "To me, a fun thing to do is golf in the summer. There are about 11 golf courses in East Tennessee, plus it is easy to pick up." Sylvia (age 12) and Greta (age 7) our new President attended the day camp at Tipton-Haynes Historic House in Johnson City, TN. They went to the Cherokee week, the Revolutionary Week and the Civil War week with crafts and dramatic productions of the periods. Greta Lane says " You should go to Tipton-Haynes Summer Day Camp. It is fun! The house is big and square. The woods are big and full of oak trees, and the cave is fun, too. The cave is easy to walk into, but you may bump your head so duck. There are wild flowers and pretty flowers especially May apples, Jack-in-the -pulpit, trilliums, and blackberries, but you can't eat them yet. The people who lived there were John Tipton and Landon Carter Haynes. The farm used to be 120 acres, but what you see now is 17 acres. Imagine 120 acres, that would go to Buffalo Mountain (on the south side of Johnson City.)" Sevier Station The Sevier Station Society traveled to Historic Collinsville Southside, TN on Saturday Sept. 15. We enjoyed a hay ride to look at the entire area and were entertained and informed by Mr. Stanley who lives on the property. It was wonderful to see first hand how folks lived in the 1800s. We presented Mr. Stanley a Ft. Nashborough pin from our state project. He beamed when Elizabeth Clark-our President presented it to him. We are proud to announce that Abigail - our youngest member-was verified on Sept. 5, She presently lives in Japan with her military family. Her mother, grandmother and great grandmother all belong to the Captain William Edmiston Chapter DAR Clarksville, TN. Two of our members-derek Clark and Ella Gould-represented our chapter at the DAR social on Sept. 8, They sold flag pins we had made, sold Ft. Nashborough pins and gave out constitution pamphlets to the DAR members.

15 VOLUME LVIV, ISSUE 2 THE LIBERTY BELL PAGE 15 Fount T. Smothers SAR/C.A.R. Patriot Ancestors Essay Contest The ultimate mission of SAR and CAR is to share the ideals and values of those valiant men and women who gave us "AMERICA" with our fellow citizens and most particularly, with the next generation. Thus in an effort to find ways to strengthen our natural bond with, and our support of, our young CAR Compatriots, we in SAR have established a program to encourage you young people to explore our shared heritage of liberty, through the lens of your own Patriot Ancestors involvement in that epic struggle to give us AMERICA. The idea is for SAR chapters to sponsor an essay contest among the members of the Tennessee CAR Society (or societies) in their vicinity and then hold a competition between the various chapter winners at the state level. 1. Age Groups: In order to encourage our younger CAR Compatriots to participate, we have established two age groups: Those 12 years of age and younger and, those over 12 years of age. The contestant should indicate their age on the submission. 2. Family. We wish to strongly encourage these young people to express their own thoughts and understanding of our history and the ideals and values which led their Patriot Ancestor to risk everything to give us our country. However, we also hope that work on this essay will offer an opportunity for the CAR contestant to strengthen the bonds of their family s and their community s shared heritage. We believe that invaluable knowledge of their personal connection to the ideals and values that underlie AMERICA can best be achieved by young people in a strong connection with their own family and community. Therefore, parents, other family members, teachers, etc., are not only allowed to work with the CAR contestant on this essay, but they are strongly encouraged to do so. The contestant should acknowledge those family members (and/or others) who assisted them with the essay. Dates: Contest participants should contact their sponsoring TNSSAR Chapter for their contest closing date. TNSSAR Chapter winners should be submitted to Rick Hollis by January 31, 2013 at tnssar@bellsouth.net. TNSSAR state level winners of this contest will be presented at the Youth Awards Luncheon of the Annual TSSAR Meeting, Saturday afternoon, March 16, Details may be found on the Tennessee Society SAR website at tnssar.org.
