3 CDR JAMES BALOGH and P/C JAMES SOMMERS on WTOD RADIO PROMOTING SAFETY ON THE WATER from Patricia Meyer, P The beginning of the story is that members Pat and Steve Meyer know Rick Metz who has been a builder and developer since 1972, builds homes in Bowling Green, and is the co-host of A Firm Foundation radio show, heard every Saturday at 11:00 a.m. on Supertalk 1560, WTOD. Rick recognized that life jacket safety might be an excellent topic for his WTOD radio audience and so approached Pat and Steve with the idea. The rest is history...cdr Jim Balogh and Squadron Educational Officer P/C Jim Sommers were interviewed by Rick on the show on Saturday, July 7. The following is a summary written by Rick for the Bowling Green Sentinel & Tribune. Page 3 THE BREEZE Education, Education LAST BOAT SMART CLASS OF THE 2007 BOATING SEASON IS AT CLAY HIGH SCHOOL 4 Thursdays, Starts September 27 Details on back cover of Breeze Saturday on A Firm Foundation we did our first broadcast about an important subject here on the North Coast -- boating. Our special guests on the program were Jim Balogh and Jim Sommers, Commander and Educational Director, respectively, for the Toledo Power Squadron. This group is a squadron of the United States Power Squadrons, a group promoting safe boating on the water. Growing up in Ohio, I spent many of my summers at Indian Lake in Logan County. After many trips with friends -- on Lake Erie and in Florida on the Gulf -- it doesn t take long to realize that the bigger the body of water, the more complicated safe boating becomes. And with these larger bodies of water, the more the Captain of the ship must have knowledge and training in safe boating. Much of our safety discussion centered around PFDs, personal floatation devices, and their uses. In 2000 there were 815 boating fatalities. Of those fatalities, 574 drowned. Of those 574, 509 were not wearing a PFD -- a whopping 90%. Above: l to r: P/C Jim Sommers along with Rick Metz cohost of A Firm Foundation WTOD radio show, and Cdr Jim Balogh, along with the other co-host of the radio show. See article at left. Boating in this part of the country takes on a unique hazard in the form of hypothermia. The water temperature in a large body of water like Lake Erie is only warm during two (2) months of the year, but most of the year it s cold, below 60 degrees. Below 60 degrees the average person can only survive about one (1) hour before the effects of hypothermia set in. Below 40 degrees, the survival time can be reduced to just 15- to 30-minutes. Add to this hazard the clothes and shoes or boots a person who ends up in the water has on, makes cold water survival even more complicated. All these facts about safe boating brings me to a safety point to consider right here in Wood County where there are numerous ponds, small lakes, and rivers. How many of you living close to one of these bodies of water has a throwable device with at least 50-feet of line on stand by? For many years, when the kids were small and we had a pond adjacent to our house, I had a throwable device on a pole by the pond. We did a lot of ice skating when conditions permitted and what if someone had fallen through the ice? The pond was 12-foot deep; how would you get someone out of the pond without putting yourself at risk? We continually mentioned throughout this safety discussion with officers of the Toledo Power Squadron that being a good swimmer may not prevent a person from drowning. Living near the water, from the swimming pool to Lake Erie, safety should always come first! Pick up a podcast at: Above: P/C Jim Sommers was asked to give a short talk on water safety to 1st thru 4th graders at a local day care center. Except for the rubber snake that some kid tossed and the flashlight that another shined in his eyes, the demo went pretty well. Jim said he has found a new audience! We see he talked about fire extinguishers and he brought a boat to show that boats and life jackets go hand in hand. Good for Jim!

They have worked terrifically hard for our enjoyment.

7 MORE KELLEYS ISLAND Page 7 THE BREEZE Mid-Season Rendezvous Wrap-Up Kelley s was another wonderful rendezvous. This year for each of our cruises, it has been Knot too hot and Knot too cold, just perfect. All the TPS participants had a great time. Friday night we all enjoyed our share an appetizer event along with the most unusual hat contest. Everyone sported their most unusual hat and the winners were Jason Snook and Jan Leutz. Later that evening most of us headed up for some karaoke. We had singers, dancers, and drinkers. It was great fun. Friday night was our dock party with most unusual hat contest. Above l. to r. Larry Cole, Jan Leutz, Felicia Evans, Ed Fairchild, Jim Balogh, and Don Leutz. Left: Laughing at their funny hats are Honey Hutchinson, Jean Balogh and Pat Meyer. Our Saturday afternoon poker run was also fun. We could not have asked for a more perfect day. Everyone rented golf carts and headed out around the island to collect their tickets. The first place poker hand winner was Ernie Mease, and the second place winner was Chris Hoover. That evening everyone headed to their favorite restaurant for dinner. Sunday morning breakfast was its usual spectacular event. Ed Fairchild gave the blessing and all of us enjoyed a hearty breakfast with a lot of friendship. 10 boats made the cruise. Larry Cole s dock mates Bonnie and Jeff boated over too. We also had lots of guests: Pat and Steve Meyer s daughter Julie and husband Jason. Don and Jan Leutz s daughters Taylor, Logan, Jessica and her friend Chris. Todd Fischer and Sandy Corpe joined Honey and Chuck Hutchinson aboard. Fran and Karen Teserero had their daughter Liz and grandchildren Rachel and Zachary aboard as well. Those joining the rendezvous by taking the ferry over were Gene Joseph who stayed one night with Felicia and Nelson Evans, and Mike Schabeck and Carolyn who visited Samantha and Chris Hoover. We had a huge gang and a huge amount of fun and socializing! See you on the lake! Above: Hanging out on Larry Cole s new boat l. to r. are Jason Snook, Larry Cole, Linda Fairchild, Ed Fairchild, Felicia Evans, and Jean Balogh. Chuck & Honey Hutchinson Hello Gang, LABOR DAY CRUISING Apparently not many of you (just 2 boats) want to go to Cedar Point for Labor Day weekend. Therefore we have canceled the Power Squadron Rendezvous for that weekend. Greg & Ruth Gerwin are still going, so if anyone wants to join them, please give Greg a call. The rest of us have an opportunity to go to the new Marina District Marina in Toledo. Commander Balogh has arranged for $10.00 per day docks for all those who want to go. There will also be a water taxi that will take you to the restaurants in International Park if you so desire. If you are interested in joining us, please give me a call at P.S. We will be refunding all of you who paid deposits for Cedar Point. If you do not attend the Marina District rendezvous, I will mail your money to you. Chuck

I am so sorry to report that in typing the story from my notes, I left a very important person off the list. Also attending the dinner was P/C Brownell (Chuck) Goebel, SN (1984) and wife Barbara who reside in Eaton, Ohio. Chuck spoke to the group and reported that he is in good health. He walks two miles every day and has 12 beautiful grandchildren. Both Barb and Chuck are enjoying retirement. We are sorry about this omission. Dinner speaker Saturday night was R/C Jean Hamilton, who chairs the National USPS Marine Environmental Committee. She introduced an attractive new brochure Environmental Best Practices for Boaters which will be available in quantity later this year. Her talk was on global warming. She is employed by Marathon Oil Company and the talk elicited a good deal of discussion. D/C Sam Woodruff presided over the well-organized rendezvous and council meetings.
