1 Volume 64, Issue 1 September 2018 COMMANDER MESSAGE Hello Everyone, Hats off to P/C and current SEO Tom Schmersal for organizing the BOC On the Water certification for IN and CN held last Saturday, 25 August out of West Harbor on Catawba, and special thanks to certifier P/C Larry Lowe SN CN for putting up with all of us. Together we had six or seven members seeking BOC credentials from Toledo and Lima. A member certifier came from Chicago to help, a serious racing sailor who is at a level I will never reach. It was truly a thrill simply to be there. And the weekend started Thursday when we helped at the Cedar Point Boat Show. Short story: A man from Buffalo, NY joined our local sailing club a few years ago, having started as an engineer for a small manufacturer south of Celina. Dave bought a Hunter 25.5 from a club member, tuned it up and encouraged the rest of the racing fleet to see if we could catch him we couldn t. RCR Yachts is a large dealer and brokerage in Buffalo, with which I am familiar from looking at boats. Dave was able to retire early to become the RCR agent in western Lake Erie, based in Sandusky. They insist he sail around in a new 41 Beneteau Oceanis, to try to sell it at boat shows, and to generate traffic for the rest of their offerings. When Dave Bertsch, a fairly new member from Sandusky and I finished our time, we went to walk the docks, and I told him on one of the sailboats was probably a guy I know. First pier, first boat, there sits my friend from Buffalo on his new 41, shirt pressed perfectly with a grin on his face one can have only when things have been going very well. Indeed. The next E Board meeting is Thursday, 6 Sept at the Allentown church. Then for October we will have Mr. John Myers, who spoke to us before, telling the story this time about his recent crewing adventure, delivering a 43 sailboat from Ecuador, through the Panama Canal and to Florida. Four weeks at sea, if you can imagine that. It will be Thursday, 4 October at the St. Marys Boat Club, and I think we re doing the Past Commanders spaghetti dinner. E Board will meet at 1700 with dinner at Have a safe and joyous Labor Day weekend. Be well, Cdr. Brad Barton SNN C ALANDER O F E VENTS THURS. SEPT. 6 EBOARD MTG ALLENTOWN CHURCH, LIMA THURS. 2 EDUCATION OFFICE I hope everyone is having a good boating summer. Two more months for my boating season, I take it out the last weekend of October. Remember boats need to be taken care of after the fun in over. USPS has several boat courses that can be taken after boating season is over. If you need to take or brush up on your boating maintenance please contact me. BOAT OPERATOR CERTIFICATION (BOC) Some of our own were busy getting certified in August. Brad Barton Inland Navigator IN Mike Lyons Coastal Navigator CN Tom Schmersal Coastal Navigator CN Please contact me if anyone is interested in any classes. Any questions or comments please call SEO P/C Tom Schmersal, CN Squadron Educational Officer tomschme@bright.net Cell # Administrative Officer Ahoy! I hope this finds everyone enjoying the summer days! I cannot believe it is Labor Day! Brad and I have been so incredibly busy this summer. We have made lots of trips to Cleveland, some small camping trips and a long trip to Kansas to visit family. Summer has been so very nice but it seems we have not sailed nearly enough. I am hoping for Fall sailing. It actually is my very favorite time to sail. The breezes tend to be cool and steady. There is nothing like having a crisp hot tea on the boat looking at the fall foliage. Anyway, we should have some beautiful days ahead! Hopefully we can get a nice showing for the Lake Cruise. Thank you Rick, Penny and Erica for heading this up! Brad and I are excited about the trip. Unfortunately, we will not have our boat at Lake Erie but we are planning to meet everyone at the dock! It amazes me we have been to Cleveland so many times and passed the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame often and never have been there! We are excited! Just a reminder we have an E Board meeting coming up on Thursday, September 6 at 7:30 at the Allentown Church. Thank you Carolyn for offering to host! Please come and support the club! Also, the first dinner meeting will be Thursday, October 4th with more information coming. Remember, November will be the Fall Conference and December 1 will be the Christmas Party with the Findlay Squadron. The Christmas Party will be held at the Findlay Inn this year. Also, more details will be coming at a later date. Enjoy these last warm days of summer and hoping to see everyone at the E Board meeting! See all soon! Lt/C Anita Barton, P Was a good time for all in attendance and thank you to the members that set up, cooked and tore down.we appreciate you! Thank you to ALL for joining us!
