2 Volume 39 Issue 3 Commander s Message Cdr Tony Smith, AP Executive Commander s Message Lt/Cdr Joseph Salafia, S Well, it certainly hasn t been a great spring for boating. After delaying the blessing of the fleet for a week due to rain we have now had to put it off indefinitely for the same reason. Nonetheless, we had a great lunch at Seacrets. We will hold the actual blessing of the boats in association with a raftup at a future date. Many thanks to Bonnie Curro for her perseverance through this entire series of events. In spite of the weather so far we have a fantastic selection of events lined up for the remainder of the summer. We have a number of raft-ups planned and our ever popular happy hours (aka summer socials) are back. Also note that we will be continuing our regular membership meetings throughout the summer. Check the calendar of events in this newsletter for details. In addition to our power squadron specific events we are running the Ocean Pines boat parade that is associated with the 50th anniversary celebrations. Standby, we will be needing a number of people to assist with this fun event. Well it seems like June 19th is here already. Seems like it snuck up on me all of a sudden. So, Tuesday, June 19th at 10 am Pintail Park cleanup. By the time you read this in the newsletter we will have already have completed the task. Oh well. Next function to keep in mind is June 21st, Thursday, General Membership meeting at the Swim and Racquet club, 6:30 pm. June 28th Happy hour at Sneaky Pete s, Chuck Hinz June 29th Raft up Capt. Bill Sewell. 6:00 pm Make sure you check the calendar in this newsletter for more upcoming events and dates. Our Chincoteague trip on Sept. 9and 10. Capt. Claude Lewis. Remember the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Well now you are in for a 21st century Expedition by Lewis and??? This is only a snapshot of the activities planned so far. Again, please refer to the calendar and be sure to join us for all the fun.
3 Volume 39 Issue 3 Administrative Officer s Message Lt/C Linda Hess, S Education Officer s Message Lt/C Morton Brown Hi, Summer of 2018 is here and the OCPS is geared up to make sure it is a great summer. We will have our June membership general meeting outdoors on June 21. It will be held at the Swim and Racquet Club Pavilion and begin at 630 pm. Please bring your own lawn chairs. Our Thursday night Social Hours have been scheduled. There will be s sent out on the date and time of the socials as well as our raft ups. Our trip to Chincoteague is planned for September. This is turning out to be a huge success with already 50 participants signing up. It will be a great trip. More updates will be available shortly, so keep an eye out for them. For this reason, our Octoberfest will be held the first Saturday in October. More details will be coming as we get closer to the date. Sue Sewell, Jeanne Stiehl and myself will be meeting shortly to get our list updated. If you are not getting s or know of any member that is not receiving s, please let me know. Hope to see you all at our June 21st general membership meeting. With the start of summer upon us, the Education Department has not been too active. I have three items to report for this period. I finally received a response from D/5 Commander Humphrey to the letter I wrote him concerning The Henry F. Sweet Fund. At the D/5 Conference a representative of the fund announced that they were looking for squadrons that could use funds for Education. I wrote them requesting funds to buy student books for the ABC3 course. I received such a negative response that I thought it should be brought to the attention of the Commander D/5. His response was that the Henry F. Sweet fund was separate entity from D/5, but he will watch more closely the activity of the fund. I submitted the OCPS for recognition as a volunteer group within Worcester County. I received an back from the Chairman of the Volunteer Committee stating that she received our forms and the selection committee will meet after the 4th of July. The last item I have is that I am nominating Fred Steihl for the Chapman Award for Excellence in Education. I would appreciate any former students, of Fred s to write a letter of recognition on how well Fred taught the class. The application calls for at least five letters from former students recommending Fred.
4 Volume 39 Issue 3 Good and Welfare Message Jeanne Stiehl Several of our members have been dealing with surgeries since our last report. Stock Harmon is up and around months after the hip replacement from hell. It was great to see him offering moral support at our annual Pintail Park Clean-up on June 19. Gene Harris is recovering after back surgery in early June. As I write this, Renee Fox is in the hospital for followup intestinal surgery which was performed on June 18. Hopefully, she will be home by the time you read this. Longtime members Dan and Penny McGrath are moving this month to Eagle s Point, a 55+ community in Chesapeake, VA to be closer to their son who works in the Norfolk area. We wish them a smooth transition and happiness in their new location. Mort and Lorraine Brown are also relocating, although they will still be nearby. They are going to Lighthouse Lakes which is off route 54 in Delaware. Their new home will be ready in July. I am sad to report that cancer has claimed the lives of two former members of our Squadron. John Bohlmann passed away in November after a private battle with lung cancer. Before moving to Ocean Pines, John and Bette had lived on Long Island, New York and John had worked on the clean-up of the Twin Towers after 9/11. Jim Wahl died in May shortly after a surprising cancer diagnosis. Our condolences go out to both families. There is some GOOD news! Vicki Harmon recently received the Spirit Award from Coldwell Banker. Congratulations, Vicki! We have some new members and I encourage all (both old and new) to attend our various summer raft-ups, socials and projects to get acquainted.
