Regatta Day opened brght and clear rwlth a crlspneas n the ar that was a sort of echo of the chll that made blankets comfortable durng the nght. But the crspness very quckly wore oft and the chll of the nght melted under the hot sun untempered by enough breeze from any quarter to break, the llaga that were everywhere hung out from ther ag staffs. But there was abundant evdence everywhere that t was a holday. Mute and dssolvng testmony to ths fact was gven by the meltng blocks of ce left by the cemen at the doors of the down-tow- n busness houses, doors whch n most cases were not to be opened durng the day except to admt some clerk anxous to clear up work that had fnllen behnd, or the head of the frm takng advantage of a quet day to work out some of hs busness problems. But there were more heads of frms out enjoyng tho holday than there were solvng busness problems n the quet of closed offces. A good many of them were out wth the youngsters of the famly and had to lsten to Juvenle expert opnon of the relatve merts of crews and yachts, and even to Jon n the dscusson of vctory and defeat. t may be sad however that for the most part these heads of Arms who are also heads of households seemed to enjoy both the dscussons and the holday a well as anyone. There was evdence that t was a holday too, n the drecton of the stream of travel on the streets. Everybody ueemed bound for, the water front. Pans cars used the seldom used tracks along the Esplanade, but tho crowds brought by the electrc cars had ether to walk from the car lne to the water front or tak6")acks. But there was no mstakng the drecton n whch the crowds were gong. Further evdence, f further evdence were needed, that the day was a holday, was gven by the attre of those on the street. There was lttle to suggest the work-a-da- y world. Everybody had on holday attre and nearly every- - body showed the colors of one or the other of the rval boat and yacht clubs oar-wawhose rvalry at the s one of the most absorbng features of the days program. The entre water front was early a scene of the greatest lfe, actvty and color. The crowds got down early. The boat club houses were the rendezvous of many of the holday makers. The Myrtle club house s n a locaton new snce last regatta day, and ths was the frst opportunty many of ts hundreds of frends had had to see t snce t was moved out beyond the channel wharf. And although the new locaton makes t much further from town than t formerly was, there seemed no ndcaton that any frends remaned away on ths account, so gen- - erous was the hosptalty dspensed and so generous the response to t. The ealanl club house too was the mecca of hundreds of frends who make regatta day a long enjoyable holday. The fact that the two club., houses are not now almost sde by sde was a new feature of ths Regatta Day and was much commented on by the RBSEBOElBnBQQDDQDBBBB&BSlED a s M B General Agts. for the aw. slands Prudental X.lfe nsurance Company XB qf Amerca, assets.$48,630,5 33 M Standard Accdent Co., assets,389, Natonal Surety Co. of New York, assets.c0.92c D7 Norwch Unon Fre nsurance Socety, assets 6,82, Englsh - Amercan Underwrters, assets 2,04, S Orent Fre nsurance Co., assets... 2,04,32 00 ZENO K, MYERS, Manager n sunnce Department, 923 m Fort a Street. The two club houses were handsomely decorated nsde and out. The shppng n the harbor was brght wth color. There was scarcely a vessel that was not dressed out. awaan ags Were almost as numerous as Amercan ags, and the colored buntng on the long halyards ashed brght n the sun. The arrval of the Nppon Maru early n the mornng added another feature of lfe to the harbor scene. She was docked at the Channel wharf and her passengers enjoyed an unusual and what to most of them was a most enjoyable experence a holday n onolulu, when that holday was Regatta Day. enry E. Almys houseboat was moored n the harbor and was used as the Judges and Starters stand. t was moored rght n a lne from Wllder3 wharf to the moorngs Ewa of the lghthouse. From.one end the Amercan ag oated and from the other the awaan sgnal ags of varous knds added color. From any of the wharfs the scene across the harbor wasan enchantng one. The Judge3 stand almost n the mddle of the harbor. Beyond t tho lghthouse and the lghthouse keepers quarters showng flags and buntng. On the AValklkl sde of the harbor the bg Japanese lner Nppon Maru at the wharf, and much small craft moored n that regon or ttng about as ther owners got them nto poston or carred guests nbout from one place of u- - terest to another. The Unted States shp roquos wth ts unon jack at the bow, the flag aft and her pennant lloat- - ng from the mast, gave a touch of lfe and color to the naval wharf porton of the harbor. Further toward the Ewa sde of the harbor there was much shppng and t all was resplendent n ags and buntng whle every wharf from whch a vew of any of the events could be secured was crowded wth men and women, young men and young women, chldren and youth, the brght colors of the ladles gowns addng to the anmaton of the crowds whch was at a hgh ptch anyway from nterest- - n the events gong on. Tho Terrtoral Band was early on hand and added the touch of musc to.what was a most entrancng scene onolulu arbor on Regatta Day. The decoratons at the ealanl Boat and Yacht Club were not elaborate but were qute effectve. The tme honored custom of havng the natonal colors and the club llag floatng sde by sde from the two ag poles at the front of the buldng was observed. Runnng from both standards were halyards of many brght colored sgnal flags. The front and sde lanals were lned wth a varety of these sgnal colors. nsde of tho buldng the dea of decoraton was to show the famous "Bluo and Whte" colors of the ealanl club. No attempt was made to decorate the club house n the lower oor as the varous racng shells and barges had been scored n ths part of tha buldng up to the tlrnorof callng the varous races, so t was thought best not to do Lany thng that mght nterfere wth the prompt removal of the boats. Upstars however the decoratons were artstcally arranged. The hand rals leadng up the wde star case had been wound alternately, wth whte and blue materal. The prncpal attempt at decoraton had of course been made n the dancng hall on the upper floor The chandelers were wound wth the FSERMEN Would do well to nspect our lne of tackle. Refreshments were served from the sde room. Dancng was enjoyed durng tho mornng and wll be contnued durng the afternoon. The ealanl Club had ssued nvtatons dsregardng the former custom of keepng open house. n contrast to ths polcy, however the rval organzaton, the Myrtle club held open house, both clubs entertaln-nl- g large crowds, the Myrtles especally beng prased for ther manner of entertanng n such lberal fashon. The Myrtle boat house was" decorated n qute artstc style. The hroad lanal where dancng was enjoyed was decorated wth a profuson of tl and palm leaves. Varous stars and garlands made of the Amercan coolrs decorated the cellng. Flags were dsplayed about the house, the colors floatng from the mast n front of the place. As early as 9 oclock ths mornng, the people began to ock to tho bout house and along the Water Front. The vew from the Myrtle boat house was much supelor to that from the ealanl boat house. The Myrtles had a splendd vew of the entre course. The arrval of tho Steamshp Nppon Maru and her dockng at tho Channel wharf close to the ealanl club house shut off much of the makal end of the course and obstructed what would otherwse, have been a lne vew. Seats were provded for the varous people at botl club houses. The cuos wn entertan throughout tho afternoon. Dancng wll be the order of the day. WRELESS LNE TO FARALLONES GOVERNMENT. PLANS GREAT N- NOVATON FOR POltT-v TRACT FOR STATON AWARDED. SAN FRANCSCO. Sept. 3. Professor McAdle, chef of the local Weather Bureau, was nformed by a telegram from the Washngton authortes yesterday that the contract for the constructon of the new wreless telegraphy staton on the Farallones had been awarded to W.. lealy of the frm of ealy & Tlbblts. Work on the buldng wll commence mmedately and t s expected that the structure wll be completed wthn sxty days. The accepted desgn was made by Reld Bros., archtects. The staton when fnshed wll have cost the Government about $5000. Fourteen contractors presented bds. The buldng wll consst of lvng rooms for the Weather Bureau olllclals n charge and a second story for an observatory and workshop. That ths port s to have so great an mprovement s due largely to the energy and perseverance of Professor Mc- Adle. t s solely on hs recommendaton that the Government has consented to the necessary outlay of money and he wlt have entre charge of the work when the staton s establshed. n speakng of the matter last nght he sad: We have a start now and the thng s gong through as fast as possble. We shall undoubtedly at some tme n the near future have the Farallones connected wth the manland by wreless telegraph. t may be necessary at frst to lay a cable because the new system has not yet reached a stage where t s always practcable. The Fessenden method, whch s the one adopted by the Government, s undoubtedly the best. Whether the authortes wll decde to nstall that system mmedately, do not know. At any rate, we shall have telegraphc connecton wth the slands very soon. The nnovaton wll be a grand thng for ths port. t wll be of especal value to the shppng nterests, as vessels can be reported much earler than at present. An attempt was once made to get connecton wth the slands by means of carrer pgeons, but the scheme proved mpractcable. Of course there s no mmedate danger of war, but n such a case, f San Francsco were to be attacked, the value of the new staton would be nestmable. wll have the buldng erected mmedately and meanwhle awat nstructons from Washngton as to the means of communcaton to be adopted. That s, t s not pleasant for true Democrats. t must be understood that there are two broad classes urder the Democratc banner. There are the real Democrats, who know what the prncples of tho Democracy are, men who are Democrats by convcton, who are not after offce or emolument, but who beleve n ther party, and then there are the spurous Democrats. These latter are composed of men who have been dsapponted of ofllce from the Republcan party, men who are ome R.ulers and followers of W.coxlsn,.but have not dared to as hs supporters, but have sneakedn anvong the come-forwar- Democrats, and hlflden ther poltcal After the boat. races.there wll be a polo game. One feels that wth personal effort, there s every chance of the enterprse beng well done. nakedness under the folds of the Democratc banner. The true Democrats one can honor. They are men who have reasons for the fath that s n them. From the Republcan pont of vew they may bo utterly n the wrong, but one can gve them credt for ts beng an honest fath. For the spurous Democrat there can bo nothng but reprobaton and contempt. e gets hs measure of t, too, from the out and out ome Rulers wth whom he has afflated, as wtness the remarks of Wlcox last nght. The Atlantc slave trade has been practcally broken up, but slave vessels stll carry on ther tralllc on the Red Sea, on the east coast of Afrca and from thence nto the Persan Gulf. Tho pretunt slave trade s n the hands of Arab traders, and the crews of the slavers are Arab and Negro. n former days, the days of the celebrated Black Jake, the crews were gathered from all the natons upon earth.
