ACK FROM THE COAST FFTY PORTUGUESE WHO LEFT FOR CALFORNA RETURN ON ALAMEDA TODAY. n the Alamedas steerage today re turned half a hundred Portuguese men, women and chldren, who went from these slands to seek ther fortunes n Calforna. They have had ther expe rence and are returnng to Hawa, asssted by local captal, to reman. Some, durng ther stay on the man land, developed consderable world-pols- h and are brngng t home n layer-cak- es to pass around among ther less prvleged frends. As one young Portuguese came off the gangway he was greeted n Portu guese by a Honolulu boy. "Aw, talk Englsh, cant you," sad the prodgal. He had learned Englsh snce hs departure. The Portuguese found Calforna a falure, as a place for them to settle n, and ther experences wll probably do much to put an end to the Portuguese exodus from here. GOLFNG HAVNG A LOCAL ROOM SOME OF HAWAS ENTHUSASTS WOULD LKE TO ENTER AGANST CALFORNA CHAMPONS. Tho comng golf tournament for tho champonshp of the slands s caus ng no end of speculaton among tho golfers here n town. The date has not been decded upon as yet, but t wll probably be held some tme about the mddle of September. t s rather hard to pck the wnner, but t s thought that the race s among about eght players. Tho players from the other slands are an unknown quantty. "Golf wth ts ups and downs s a very uncertan game at all tmes." Some of the best players m the country today have been beaten by other mens who dd not come anywhere near them when they were n form. To be good at golf one has to play the game constantly, and to keep at weak ponts. The course nt the Country Club hero s one of tho best natural courses n the country today, and n a very lttle whle wll be far ahead of a good many courses that are consdered to be tho best today. One has to take a good deal nto consderaton when playng at the Country Club. Wnd, dstance and drecton are ttte prncpal thngs that have to be thought ot there. On other courses the wnd does not play such an mportant part. The strong trades blowng over the Pall and down the valley have a tendency to carry the ball away from the hole,.whle a ball drven rght nto the Wnd wll nvarably be carred n just about the rght drecton. The comng champonshps on the Pacfc Coast wll be played very shortly somewhere n Cal forna and many would lke to have a team chosen to represent the slands The frst four players n the Mclnernj Cup tournament would make a very good team. The foursome tournament wn oe payea sometme tns monm and some good matches can be expect ed. CENTURY OR PLANS FOR SOME NTERESTNG CONTESTS AT THE RACE TRACK BENG DSCUSSED. The Endurance race around the sland next Sunday for the cup gven by the von Hamm-Youn- g Co. s causng a good deal of nterest among the dfferent automoble owners n town. The run s gong to be a great Success, t the entres have anythng to do wth t. Nearly twenty people have sgn- - led ther ntentons to go, and all aro anxous to have ther names nscrbed on the cup. The race wll be a good endurance test, as the course s rather a hard one, and the odds are such that a car wll have to do some tall gong to fn sh wth perfect scores. Every ono who s entered n the race s asked to be on hand before 8 oclock, as numbers and sgns wll be gven out then, and other matters explaned before the start at 8 sharp. The cars wll three-mnutstart at e ntervals, and wll go over the Pall road to Kahuku. A stop wll be allowed there for a half an hour, when they wll contnue to Halewa. One hour.wll be allowed there for lunch and then the return to town. All cars must carry an offcal observer, who wll note any stoppage and the length and cause of same. Some of the places on the weather sde of the sland are very sandy, and t would be very much better to have the cars equpped wth non-skdddevces so that they would not snk down n the sand, ana perhaps put them out of the race, when everythng else was runnng well. The commttee of the Automoble Club s very anxous to have the races on- Labor Dayjf they can be arranged, and t seems that t would be a good thng for the sport to have them, one of the members stated. The dea s to lvdo the cars nto classes and to start them at one mnute ntervals nstead of placng them all n lne as on larger tracks. Tho danger would not ue so great, and better tme would bo made on the track n the park, anda t has been decded by the commttee of the Honolulu Automoble Club that n the run on Sunday the owners lttle practce wll enable every drver can put on skddng devces wthout to take tho turns at full speed. SEATTLE, July 29. The poston ot the Japanese Assocaton on the ques ton of the excluson of Japanese laborers from tho Unted States s stat ed n a memoral address whch was presented to Oscar S. Straus, secretary of Commerce and Labor, durng hs recent vst to Seattle. The address 3 sgned by C. T. Takahash, actng presdent, for the Japanese Assocaton. Dscussng the queston of mutual excluson from Japan and the Unted States of the laborers of both countres, sklled and unsklled, the address says: "t s not dffcult to perceve that an agreement of mutual excluson s, n ths case really one-sde- d, because there are but few Amercan laborers desrous of gong to Japan. A mutual excluson of laborers, sklled and unsklled, under such crcumstances s not, we fear, calculated to foster a frendly feelng between the two natons. To mantan and chersh the frendly relatonshp that has exsted between ths country and Japan ever snce the latter entered nto the worlds comty, t s, we thnk, of the frst mportance that the Japanese be treated by the Amercans on the same footng as the peoples of Europe. "The yearly number of Japanese mmgrants nto ths country does not ex ceed a hundredth part of the entre mmgrants.n one year. n the fscal year ended June, 90G, there were on ly 3, 835 mmgrants from Japan as compared wth 265,38 from Austra-Hungary-, 273,20 from taly and 25, GG5 from Russa. n the precedng year the Japanese numbered only one to ten compared wth Russan mm grants; one to thrteen conjpared wth Austrlans, and one to fourteen com pared wth talans. "Moreover, the number of Japanese mmgrants s not ncreasng, as has been reported n the newspapers. The address sets forth that the state atut that tre Pacfc coast wll soo repeat the hstory of Hawa, under laws permttng the Japanese the same rghts as the mmgrants from Europe, s untenable. t says: "t has also been asserted that f Japanese mmgraton be not stopped, the Pacfc coast wll soon be turned nto a second Hawa, where 74 per cent of the adult populaton s Japa nese and Chnese. t s, however, very unreasonable to forecast the future ot the Pacfc coast from the experence of Hawa. "The reason why the Japanese and Chnese populaton has become so large n the Hawaan slands les n the fact that the Japanese arfu Chnese had come to settle there before the Amercans had acqured the terrtory. Prevous to the annexaton of the slands by Amerca, the natve government, n order to promote and develop the sugar ndustry, concluded a treaty wth Japan authorzng the latter to mport contract labor wthout restrcton. Thus a large number of Japa nese laborers had already been There before the Unted States took posses son of the slands. Had there not been such a treaty encouragng Japa nese mmgraton, the Japanese popu laton of Hawa would never have grown so large., "t s, therefore, most llogcal to vew the stuaton on the Pacfc coast, where the laws forbd all contract la- - j bor, n the same lght ab we vew con--, dltons n Hawa. t s mpossble that the condtons, where the Amerl-- j cans have long establshed themselves poltcally and economcally, would become the same as n Hawa. j "Even n Hawa, tho Amerlnnnt nro the masters n the economc as well as n the poltcal feld and the predomnatng feature of the Hawaan cvlzaton s decdedly Amercan. Furthermore, European mmgrants to the Pacfc coast are far more numerous than Japanese mmgrants to the same dstrct,- whle the Amercans themselves are mgratng westward n ncreasng numbers. The condtons n Hawa and the Pacfc coast aro too dfferent to admt of comparson," The memoral declares the chargo that Japanese mmgraton tends to lower wages wthout foundaton. "Tho reports of tho Rureau of Labor ot tho Unted States and of tho Pacfc coast," contnues tho address, "conclusvely shows that tho wages of lallor on tho Pacfc coast have been ncreasng steadly. "t s trm that n soma Hndu of work, tho Jnpnnoso gou Joss wages tmn what aro U whte laborers, lnt tlls doon lnt by any m&ans proyu, tjmt (le Ml tltlr nlne at a ulgun prgs, TO STRAU On the contrary, they are gettng tho hghest prce they can reasonably ask. n some work they can not reasonably asc the same wages as are pad whlto worklngmen, because ther physcal strength s not equal to ther whte fellow worklngmen. Besdes, they are handcapped n many ways, beng unable to speak Englsh and- - unfamlar wth the tools they have to handle. What sane employer would pay such laborers as those the same wages ho pays stronger and n some sense more effcent worklngmen? "t s the opnon of superntendents of mlls and ralroads that the Japa nese are steader and more honest than some classes of European mmgrants. t s a noteworthy fact that the Japanese ralroad laborers are gettng no smaller wages than the talan and the Greek ralroad laborers." The memorlnl to Secretary Straus ends as follows: "We respectfully submt to your ex-- ppllpnrv Ur fnrfn nnrl nnlnlnna nrt above set forth hopng that they wll receve your excellencys careful exam naton, and trustng that your excellency wll brng to bear upon the soluton of the Japanese queston the same foresght and the same breadth of vew that have characterzed your excellencys dstngushed career n other felds."
