T E R M 1 W E E K Middle School Messenger Stage 3 Takes a Stand Against Bullying National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence, Friday 16th March There have been so many amazing things happening over the couple of weeks in our school. Clean Up Australia, Stage Four Waves Camp, PiP Day building Wicking Gardens, RFS Fundraisers, STEAM Solar Ovens and Bullying No Way Day are just some of the things we have to report in this week. What is more important though is that all of these fantastic events show how we are working towards our goals in our school; Parent Partnership at Camps, at PiP and in learning. Discipleship through personal challenge, sharing the Bible and helping others, and Academic Achievement with students achieving goals, meeting outcomes and sharing their knowledge. Thank you to every member of our community; parents, students and staff who contribute to make OCS a place to belong. Mr A Lee

Week 6 arrived and it was time to hit the road as Stage 4 headed to the Northern Beaches for the very first WAVES camp! In style we hit the road, with stories to share, games to play or singing to be... err projected. There were pillow pet dance competitions, interpretive dance and some intense Sweet and Sour on the Taberner bus. Five hours of active bus entertainment flew past! First stop was the Powerhouse. We headed straight into the special Future Park display, and had a ball experimenting with interactive displays of light and modelling. It was an illuminating experience! After this, we were able to freely explore the displays around the museum. There were so many different areas! From the electric chair, space machine, virtual reality glasses to transport, there was so much to see! For some, travelling from the Powerhouse was the very first time they went over our iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge! Overnight, we stayed at Covenant Christian School. There was heaps of space on site! After dinner, kindly prepared by the Year 7 boys, we engaged in a zealous game of Extreme Spotlight. The aim was to find Miss McGowen and drop a coloured paddlepop stick in her bucket without being spotted. Trouble was, she was very sneaky at hiding right under everyone s noses and kept changing spots!! The second night was just as entertaining, with Year 8 boys taking on the challenge of preparing dinner. It is suggested that perhaps Year 7 could give them some tips next time on BBQing! Mr Follent s problem solving activities were fun, and often hilarious, as we tried to navigate the challenges.
The second day was packed full, with a walk into the Bobbin Head mangroves and an 11 km hike into the national park to see the Sphinx at the top. We saw some amazing views, had a swim and popped bluebottles at Long Reef beach. We definitely slept well that night! The highlight was unquestionably the program run by Manly Surf School on Friday. The discussion on reading the beach and ocean, the body boarding and surfing were LOADS of fun! For many of us, this was the very first time trying out a surfboard. It was gnarly, dude! The successes, the amazing stacks and dunkings and the great weather made it a fantastic lasting memory. The common quote BEST CAMP EVER! says it all! A big shout out to all the parents who joined us Mr Bangert, Mr Flemming, Mr Taberner, Mr Clancy, Mr Williams, Mrs Lawrence, Mrs Baker, Mrs Brink and Mrs Pereira Thank you VERY much, we could not have done it without you!
National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence Bullying No Way We don t dig bullying. Let s slam dunk bullying. Buddies say No to Bullying. These were some of our slogans during the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence. The NDA or Bullying: No Way Day is an initiative that has been running since 2010 on the third Friday each March. This year the day has been brought into sharper focus after the bullying that led to Dolly Everett taking her own life in January. Prime Minister Malcom Turnbull and Education Minister Simon Birmingham wrote to all Schools encouraging involvement. The positive about days like this is that it reminds us to keep anti-bullying programs at the forefront of our minds. It is important to ensure that we work against bullying every day both at school and at home. A key idea in the research about bullying is that children / students who are assertive (rather than aggressive) will be bullied much less. This is because they are not good targets. These are the students who have the social skills to negotiate entry into groups and resolve problems fairly and firmly. Bullying behaviour is most often directed at those who find it difficult to stand up for themselves. I have also heard it said that we should turn the other cheek. Bullying, however, was not the context of Jesus statement there. Take in contrast Jesus response when he was hit unjustly during his trial (John 18). Jesus asserts himself, and faces the bully by saying "If I said something wrong, testify as to what is wrong. But if I spoke the truth, why did you strike me?" Some very practical things that we as a school and as parents can do to assist our children not to be bullied are to teach assertive behaviour; such as; Ask for things directly in a strong voice, respond to others directly. Understand that it is ok to say No Do not give in to bullies but politely stand their ground with possessions and territory. Be resilient to bounce back when things don t go our way. Accept the umpire s decision We also discussed our SUPERPOWER not to stand by and let bullying happen and strategies we can use. Check out the video on the Bullying No Way site; These are not easy skills for any of us. I m convinced though that we are able to build a culture in our school where bullying is not tolerated. I know you will join with me as we work toward this goal. Mr A Lee Middle School Coordinator Middle School wearing their NDA bands.
Stage 4 Solar Oven Challenge All the fun on Wednesday started off with OCS s Stage 4 STEAM Solar Oven sausage cooking challenge. This was from a program developed by the school s STEAM team in conjunction with the University of Sydney s STEM Academy. To most of the students, the challenge seemed impossible. However, we took on the task and spent much research, time and dedication to create the best solar oven possible. We started out the task in Week 2 and have been regularly adjusting and changing our models since. In the beginning, our group started off with eagerness and excitement. It slowly eased off as we realised how big and challenging the task actually was. Yet, the whole time we kept a positive and ready to learn mindset. This helped us to continue and in the end succeed. It was a big day on Wednesday as all the teams from Stage 4 determinedly tried to cook their sausage, despite the few times the sun went behind the clouds. As time passed each group s hopes of cooking a sausage became very slim, and as the lunch bell rang the challenge was left up to two groups. These two groups, who were the closest to cooking their sausage, had created the most efficient ovens of all the groups. After half an hour, our group checked our sausage s temperature and thankfully we had surpassed the minimum safety requirements of 72 degrees; surprisingly our sausage reached a temperature of 75 degrees. All in all, this has been a great experience with much learning. We would like to thank all the teachers who made this STEAM challenge become such a big success. Elliot Bangert and Joshua Williams
