This very user friendly app is free for all parents and provides a fantastic platform for sharing news and information about what s happening at school. It can be used to alert us to your child s absence, see newsletters, check the calendar, and for us to send out important alerts, If you haven t already downloaded the app, please see the instructions included in this week s Newsletter. 2 Dear Parents and Caregivers, In the Christian tradition, this week is known and celebrated all over the world as Holy Week. This week comes at the end of the season of Lent where for the past forty days we have been journeying with Jesus in our thoughts, our prayers, and in our compassion towards those in great need. For all Christians, Lent is a time for renewal, a chance to get our lives on track and to re-consider and re-commit to our following of Jesus. In every Catholic school during this time of Lent, we have a great opportunity to take up the challenge to be practical in our following of Jesus by taking part in Project Compassion. When we actively do things to raise money for Project Compassion we are doing two things: we are allowing ourselves to think beyond our own needs and wants to become aware of people in other places who do not have the basic needs for a happy and healthy life, such as food, clothing, shelter, the chance to be educated. Secondly, we are taking the mission and message of Jesus seriously: we are putting our faith into action. When we do this, we are following the example of Jesus who gave his life for us. This year, Project Compassion will assist families in many Third World countries to grow crops that will then provide them with food and a living. In recent days, we have been made aware of the suffering and hardship of the people of Vanuatu, one of our near neighbours. The support we can give to Project Compassion may help the people of Vanuatu to rebuild their homes and to provide hope for a better and safer future. In addition to offering our practical assistance, we are also asked to remember such people in our prayers. Throughout this week, children in various classes have been leading us in our reflection on the most important days of this week. They have led us in prayer as we remembered: Palm Sunday (last Sunday) when Jesus entered Jerusalem and was greeted as king by people carrying and waving palm branches as a sign of their welcome and gladness to be with Jesus. Holy Thursday: We remember that on the night before he died, Jesus gathered for a final meal with his closest friends and followers. We call to mind this last supper when Jesus took the bread and wine and blessed them, offering them to his disciples as his body and blood with the request that whenever they gathered, they would do this in memory of him. Each time we gather together as a community on Sunday, the Lord s day, and for various school and family Masses, we are gathering as Jesus asked and we are remembering him by celebrating the Eucharist. Families who are preparing children for first Communion this year, are doing exactly this: they are teaching their children what it means to be a follower of Jesus and to be able to share in the Mass in a special way. Good Friday: This is a solemn day when we recall the events that led to the suffering and death of Jesus. We call this day good, not because what happened to Jesus was a good thing, but because Jesus was willing to give his life for us because he came to spread God s message of love to all people. Jesus would not back down or cave in to the people religious and civic leaders who were against what Jesus was teaching. As Christians, we know that Good Friday is not the end of the story. We celebrate Easter Sunday and the new life of Jesus as a powerful message of hope for all of us. It is a celebration of life and joy and begins the Easter season which lasts for the next 50 days. In the days ahead, we pray that all families will have a happy and safe Easter and we look forward to the final week of term when we return on Tuesday. 3 Special Announcement Message! Our School now has our own Skoolbag iphone and Android App to help us communicate more effectively with our Parent community. We are asking parents to install our Skoolbag School App. To install it, just search for our school name St Joseph's Catholic School Hindmarsh in either the Apple App Store, or Google Play Store. Please read below the wonderful communication advantages this App offers our parents. iphone & ipad Users 1. Click the App Store icon on your Apple device 2. Type your school name in the search, using suburb name will help. 3. If iphone, you will see your school appear, click Free then install. 4. If ipad, change the drop list to iphone Apps, your school will then be visible, click Free then install. 5. When installed click Open 6. Select OK to receive push notifications, when asked. 7. Click the More button on the bottom right of the App, then Setup. 8. Toggle on the Push Categories that are applicable for you. Android Users You must first have signed up with a Google Account before installing the App 1. Click the Play Store button on your Android Device 2. Click the magnifying glass icon at the top and type in your school name, using suburb name will help. 3. Click the school name when it appears in the search. 4. Click the Install button. 5. Click Accept for various permissions (please note, we do not modify any of your personal data on your device) 6. Click Open when installed. 7. 4 Easter Raffle Last chance to donate an egg! Our Easter Raffle is going well. The wrapping of the Easter baskets will take place tomorrow Thursday 2nd April. We should have 26 prizes of equal value, making the drawing of the raffle much easier. ** Please let your child s class teacher know if you are able to be the Parent Representative for your class. How many teachers at St Martin's school can speak Italian? A very successful Term 1 of Kanga Cricket was completed over the weekend. Congratulations to both teams on the skills, effort and enthusiasm they have displayed over the term, who knows there may even be some future Strikers and Australian players in the group. This term we introduced midweek Kanga training sessions focusing on some of the finer points of cricket with great success. Thanks to all families and friends for providing invaluable support over the term and we look forward to some more exciting cricket action when the season recommences in Term 4. Our Book Fair will be set up in the Hall early on Thursday 30 th April in time for Playgroup then will be open for students to visit along with their class.
