1 NEWSLETTER No.3 6 th March 2018 Dear Parents, OUR LADY OF THE ASSUMPTION PARISH PRIMARY SCHOOL TELEPHONE: CENTRE DANDENONG ROAD, CHELTENHAM VIC 3192 FAX: principal@olacheltenham.catholic.edu.au Website: On Friday afternoon, the children had a wonderful time cheering on their houses and participating in the Twilight Sports Carnival on our own school grounds. They participated in a variety of events: team chants, a relay, sprints, goal dodgeball and the Ninja Warrior Wall. It was great to see so many children and parents having a great time, demonstrating sportsmanship and enjoying time together. The final scores for the evening were: MacKillop (Gold) 261, Lourdes (Red) 269, Brigid (Blue) 308 and Fatima (Green) on 371. Congratulations to Fatima Green Team! A huge thank you to all staff who attended and to our wonderful house captains who put a lot of time into making and leading chants, creating posters, decorating our areas and assisting with the setup and packing up of activities. Thank you to the P&F Association for providing the sausage sizzle. Yours sincerely, Mrs Elizabeth Thompson P.E/Sports Coordinator Mrs Leonie Young Principal

3 EDUCATION IN FAITH Term 1 Catholic Social Teaching Focus: Dignity of the Human Person Scripture Focus: Mark 12: Love One Another Catholic Social Teachings This term we are focusing on the Catholic Social Teaching of Dignity of the Human Person. Each person is made in the image of God. As Christians we celebrate that God has created each person uniquely. We are joined together as a family and that God loves each of us equally. We experience God through our family and friends and The Church. This means we have to treat people with respect and fairness. Lent Week 3: In the Temple with Jesus Gospel John 2:13-25 (Sunday 4 March 2018) The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the temple he found people selling cattle, sheep, and doves, and the money changers seated at their tables. Making a whip of cords, he drove all of them out of the temple, both the sheep and the cattle. He also poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. He told those who were selling the doves, Take these things out of here! Stop making my Father s hous e a marketplace! His disciples remembered that it was written, Zeal for your house will consume me. The Jews then said to him, What sign can you show us for doing this? Jesus answered them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. The Jews then said, This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and will you raise it up in three days? But he was speaking of the temple of his body. After he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this; and they believed the scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken. When he was in Jerusalem during the Passover festival, many believed in his name because they saw the signs that he was doing. But Jesus on his part would not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people and needed no one to testify about anyone; for he himself knew what was in everyone. DAILY REFLECTION POINTS MONDAY This Gospel reading takes us into the temple in Jerusalem with Jesus. What struck me in the reading? TUESDAY Jesus is angry wit h what is happening in his Father s house. How do I feel about what I see happening in the Catholic Church today? What things make me angry, and what brings me life? WEDNESDAY Jesus is describing his body as a temple of God. How do I feel when thinking about my own body as a temple of God? How might that change the way I live? THURSDAY Some places make me feel a greater ease with God. Where is my sacred space? FRIDAY What have I discovered while spending time with Jesus in the temple this week? Mr Steve Evans Religious Education Leader

4 EDUCATION IN FAITH MEDITATION Jesus wants every person to have an ease in relating with God. The temple is a help to this end, because the believers know they can meet the Creator there. When Jesus finds the temple at work as a market he erupts. Jesus has a deep desire that the people be able to pray in the temple. Today, Jesus Spirit dwells within me, making my body a temple. I can pray because God s Spirit already rests in my body. Yet I sometimes feel a block in my sense of relationship with God. When I act without love, when I use violent words, when I see faults in others that I choose not to notice in myself These decisions might lead me to think of myself as removed from God s favour and distant from God s presence. But Jesus wants me to return to relationship with him. So now I ask Jesus for an ease in relating with God. I take time to consider the ways my body is a temple of God s Spirit. I ask God for a new sense of wonder and awe at all that I am. Now I give thanks to God s Spirit for making a home in me. I become aware of the love that is being poured into my heart. I imagine this happening each and every moment. I ask for the grace to unite my every action with the love moving within me. 8 STUDENT WELLBEING SWELL WEEKLY FOCI/THEME Week 5 Week 6 My strengths & challenges Encouragement & Positive talk Looking for the good things is the way to succeed. Teachers & students will play games and activities designed around positive talk about themselves and others. What can you do to help? 1. Encourage your child to notice things that they ve done well and say them out loud. It is important that they don t compare themselves and turn positive talk into boasting. 2. Ask your child to comment on things such as friendly behaviour, cooperative acts, patience, hard work, generosity etc; that they ve seen in the classroom or out on the yard by other students. Do you find that your child is displaying emotional or behavioural issues? OnPsych are a team of fully qualified and registered psychologists who specialise in child and adolescent services working in primary and secondary schools in both individual and group settings. Services are performed at NO COST to the school, student or parent through Medicare bulk billing. This year, we are fortunate to have OnPsych staff member, Jessica Elberg at Our Lady of the Assumption Parish Primary School. Jessica is a passionate psychologist who works with children who are experiencing a range of psychological issues such as anxiety and mood disorders, Autism Spectrum Disorders, interpersonal, learning and behavioural disorders, and adjustment difficulties (social & situational). Jessica employs psychological techniques such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, client-centred and solution-focused therapy with psycho-education. Jessica firmly believes that a collaborative approach will produce the most successful outcomes for a child. If you believe that this might benefit your child, please contact Jacqueline Kovacich, Student Wellbeing Leader at OLA, for further instructions. Miss Jacqueline Kovacich Student Wellbeing Leader

9 OLA WORKING BEE Saturday 17 th March 9:00am-3:00pm Working Bee tasks: Cleaning out gutters & drains Weeding & tidying all garden beds Playground audit & Soft Fall check Check & repair all fences & gates Plus a whole lot more!!!! BBQ Lunch Provided Bring your rakes, shovels, wheelbarrows; even your kids can help too! Whatever time you can spare would be greatly appreciated. There are many types of jobs to be done, everyone can contribute! Why do we have working bees? To make your children SMILE: Safety is a priority and the school grounds/buildings require regular upkeep. Maintenance is required to ensure that the school s facilities are in the best working order. Involvement in the school community on all levels helps build school pride and shows children we care for our school environment. Learning happens best in an orderly and well maintained environment. Encourages social interaction between families and puts faces to the names we hear at the dinner table from our children! See you all there!
