Dear Parents & Friends of Kuyper, Thursday 10 May 2018 We all need a reminder sometimes. A reminder to stop and think about who we are in this world, what our purpose is, what we were made to be.

The world they are growing up in today is somewhat like our teenage experiences, but also very very different.

1 Dear Parents & Friends of Kuyper, Thursday 10 May 2018 We all need a reminder sometimes. A reminder to stop and think about who we are in this world, what our purpose is, what we were made to be. Teaching, talking and working with young people opens our eyes to their view of the world. The world they are growing up in today is somewhat like our teenage experiences, but also very very different. With technology at their fingertips our young people are fed a constant barrage of lies and mistruths about who they should be. Advertising, social media, society and their peers tell them often that they are not enough; not good enough, not pretty enough, not smart enough, not popular enough the list goes on. Last term in PDHPE I challenged Year 10 to Dig a Little Deeper. Using this song from the Disney Movie The Princess and the Frog as inspiration, students were asked to start digging to find out who they really are in this world. We looked at the messages that they are being fed, deciphered these and discussed the purpose behind the messages. They thought about the impact these messages have on us and our society. We looked at God s word and compared His message to find the truth about who we really are. These are some excerpts from their Reflections on the unit: I ve learnt that the world says that people should dress, act, and talk in ways that they think is correct, but really people should dress, act, talk how they want without anybody saying any different. People should be confident in who they are because God created you as you GA Now that I have made a decision to dig a little deeper and not let vanity take over, and to look at life with a grateful and thankful perspective and spirit. Trying to look at life through God s perspective, through God s eyes. GP The most shocking thing, however, something which definitely made me stop and think was realising how blessed I am to grow up in a Christian community with so many other people who share similar world views to me. I am so blessed that I can go to school and hear input from other people who have the same ideals as me and realise that true beauty is on the inside, not the outside. It is also such a blessing to be able to go to a school where the teachers strive to help you to know God better and understand the way He wants us to think about similar issues such as self-worth. 2 I believe that if there are others saying you are not good enough you truly are, this is proven in the Bible. 1 Samuel 16:7 Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, Because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart. This shows that the most important one of all, Jesus, doesn t care if we have abs or the perfect body, we come to God as who we are and he accepts that. DG Another topic we discussed was how the internet, school, peers media, parents and God think about our individual looks, personality, sexuality, relationship, intelligence and career. The results showed how incorrect the internet, media and in some cases the school and individual peers were. It also reinforced that the only real opinion that matters is God s opinion. At the end of the day God made us all individuals so that we are all special and each and every one of us has a different role to play in God s big plan. LM I usually think about myself in not so good ways. I don t always like the way I look or how I dress or even how I act in day to day life because for me I don t always enjoy being different or sticking out in the crowd. The world s view on life only confirms my doubts, it tells me I am overweight and unhealthy, unfit and not muscly enough, that I don t dress in trendy or cool clothing and it even tells me that I am ugly and should wear more makeup to cover up my flaws and reach the right standard. These things that the world puts into my head are wrong and unhealthy and this term I have learnt that if ever I need confirmation that the world s message is wrong all I need to do is turn to God and he shows me that I am the exact opposite I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made. (Psalm 139:14) God Created man in his own image, in the image of man he created him; male and female he created them. (Genesis 1:27) It has helped me to change my views on what is important about my life, myself, my goals, my gifts and who I am as a Child of Christ. Because when it comes down to it, It don t matter what you look like, don t matter what you wear, how many rings you got on your finger, we don t care! LT I encourage us all to dig a little deeper. 3 Reminders Primary Winter Tunics are now selling for $20 each. They are not compulsory. However, they are warmer for winter than the Primary Dress. to order or enquire. Pray for staff, parents and campers as they plan and prepare for the Year 7/8 and Year 9/10 camps. Pray for school families who are going through difficult circumstances with illness. Pray for our School Tour morning that many new families would respond to the invitation and pay us a visit. Pray for students as they begin NAPLAN next week; for peace, truth and encouragement. All families with children enrolled at the school will be rostered on to one Working Bee during the year. Four are held; at the beginning of each term on a Saturday morning from 8am until 12 noon. Morning tea is provided and we ask that all families give a few hours once a year to help maintain their school. Working Bees are a great opportunity to meet other families and contribute to the place your children attend almost every day. The Working Bee Roster for 2018 shows the Working Bee each family is rostered for. If you find that you cannot attend your rostered date, you will be moved to another Working Bee. You will be rostered under your child s family name, and you are only expected to attend one Working Bee (although attendance at more is greatly appreciated!). You will be asked to note your attendance at the Working Bee/s. There are no penalties for families who do not attend a Working Bee, however if you cannot attend one at all, your help on another day during the week would be very much appreciated. Please contact the Office if this is the case.
