Rajendran (South Chennai MP). Rajendran told Mambalam Times that the old lights, which have seen enough service, are not bright enough now. 2 Page 2 TAMIL CINEMA 75 - A LOOK BACK By RANDOR GUY Tamil Cinema and Music - 23 Manamagal was the Tamil screen adaptation of the popular Malayalam play Suprabha by one the noted Malayalam writers, Munshi Paramu Pillai. The socially reformist play was all about a young woman who marries a womanizing useless man by force of circumstances, after being in love with another fine man who is away in England. In a daring move, she makes up her mind to be only a bride and a virgin and never a wife. Hence the title Manamagal (Bride). NSK, an ardent champion of social reforms, found the Malayalam play to be up his alley and he produced and directed it under his own banner. The cast had, besides himself and his star wife T. A. Mathuram, S. V. Sahasranamam, Padmini, Lalitha, T. S. Balaiah, D. Balasubramaniam and other members of NSK Nataka Sabha. The film had classical music as a continuous thread right through its screenplay. T. S. Balaiah played the role of a lecherous music teacher who covets his student (Padmini), the only daughter of a wealthy man. The girl is engaged to her cousin who is studying in England (Sahasranamam). The music master had previously abandoned a widow with whom he had a relationship (T. A. Mathuram), who is rescued by a good Samaritan (N. S. Krishnan). The music master also has his eyes on the young wife (Lalitha) of an aged gumastha (clerk). This lady reciprocates and the scheming duo plot to ruin the life of the rich young girl. The introductory scenes feature T. A. Mathuram lamenting about her fate to NSK. The flashback shows Balaiah leading her inside his bedroom with the tune of Radha sametha Krishna (made famous by the legendary GNB) in the background. At the end of the narration, NSK asks Mathuram where the paavi (rogue) lives. The scene immediately shifts to Padmini s house, where Balaiah is teaching her the song Paaviyanum Padu Paavi, set in raga Kalyani, a duet by V. N. Sundaram and MLV. Later Lalitha also becomes Balaiah s student and the duet Ellaam inba mayam..., set in raga Simhendra Madhyamam, followed by ragamalika swarams in Kambodhi, Mohanam, Hindolam and Ataanaa and is performed by the two (Lalitha and Padmini, with Leela and MLV as the playbacks respectively) as a sign that they have attained musical maturity. The sequence, set in a typical 1950s drawing room, has the girls seated on a mat with the music master looking. At the other end, on a swing, sits Padmini s ageing father looking on admiringly. Part of the song is shot from his perspective and the camera (placed on the swing) keeps panning forward and backward in time to the music. The duo then participate in a dance competition too where they dance to Aayirathi Thollaayirathi (sung by MLV and Leela again), a song championing many social causes - a fast paced number that has MLV dominating the show. Chinnam Chiru Kiliye of Subramania Bhrathiar made its screen debut in this film as a duet on screen between T. S. Balaiah (V. N. Sundaram) and Padmini (MLV), to which Lalitha dances. Its raagamalika suite has been grafted since then to the concert platform without any change. A song, not much heard, from the film is a solo by MLV. A sad piece (Piranda Koondil), it is shot on Padmini. The song has an amazing range and only MLV could have done justice to the number. Most of the songs in the film were penned by Udumalai Narayana Kavi. The music composer Chintamani Ramaswami Subburaman ( ) was one of the most brilliant music directors of South Indian cinema who died at the height of his creative powers when he was hardly forty. Hailing from a Telugu Brahmin family long settled down in Tirunelveli district, music ran in his genes. As a lad of sixteen, he was member of the famed HMV Orchestra in Madras. Even though he was reluctant to take up music composing as a profession at such a young age, he was forced, thanks to the games Dame Destiny plays in human lives, to compose music for a successful Telugu film Chenchu Lakshmi when he was still a teenager! Trained in classical Carnatic music, he created new trends in Tamil and Telugu cinema, bringing in other schools of music like Western and Latin American with which he was quite familiar. 3 July 28 - August 3, 2012 Plea to cover stormwater drain in lane Residents have appealed to the Corporation to cover the open stormwater drain in the service lane between Lakshmi Street and Govindan Road in West Mambalam which has remained open for several weeks. Garbage and other waste are being dumped in the open drain. Residents told Mambalam Times that they had also appealed to the Corporation to remove the encroachments in the lane which can be used by 2-wheelers during peak hours. 4 Page 4 MAMBALAM TIMES July 28 - August 3, 2012 Mambalam resident involved in research on God particle Rajivalochan Subramaniam (resident of 34/31, Kripasankari Street, West Mambalam) considered himself a failure in a US university before rediscovering himself in the field of high energy physics. A Ph.D was once a distant dream for Rajiv. It is the support of his father A. Subramanian, a retired government officer, and mother Latha and his grandparents, that enabled him to pursue his dream in CERN, Geneva. After schooling in Sri Sitaram Vidyalaya (2001) and Shri Ahobila Mutt Oriental School (2003) in West Mambalam, where he grew up on mathematics, he studied Electrical and Electronics Engineering in Bannari Amman Institute of Technology in Sathyamangalam. His finalyear project was funded by the Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology in In August 2008, Rajiv joined the Electrical Engineering Master s program in Louisiana Tech University, USA, where he got partial scholarship. In the US, there is an option to design one s master s curriculum, and Rajiv chose a combination of research and academics. A majority of Indian students in the university chose the academics option as most of them are interested in a job. Having made a tough decision, I struggled during my first year of MS, he says. The open book tests were more difficult than the closed book ones and the research work in electrodynamics made no sense to him. After nine months he quit that research, realizing he was not cut out for electrodynamics. This statement of Einstein came to his mind then: Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid. One year on American soil ended in the Fall of All of my educational loan was spent and I was depleted financially and morally. My self-confidence was very low during this time as I considered myself a failure, recalls Rajiv. It was during this hard period that he met his current adviser/professor Dr. Markus Wobisch who is involved in high energy physics. At that time he did not know that his life was going to change. Prof. Wobisch was working with the U.S. Fermi National Lab located in Chicago and Rajiv s electri- cal background was good for high energy physics research. Even for the very minor results that I showed him, he encouraged me to such an extent that I really gained confidence in life. This moral support pushed him to become a successful Ph.D student. Seeing his progress, the department chair, Dr. Lee Sawyer decided to involve him in mankind s biggest collaborative experiment, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). And that is how he started working at the ATLAS detector in the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN), Geneva, exactly two years before the discovery of the Higgs bosonlike particle. In July 2010, he arrived at CERN. CERN is an underground lab which spans the Franco-Swiss border with a circumference of 27 km. and is 100 meters under the ground. At CERN, students, academicians and scientists do collaborative work for common goals. CERN tries to answer fundamental questions about the universe. The Standard Model is a basic model in modern physics. It lists and classifies all fundamental particles and forces, many of which were discovered at CERN. There were many parallel experiments at CERN and one of the main goals was to search for the Higgs boson. The universe is filled with a field called the Higgs Field and the particles of the field are called Higgs bosons. Assume that a swimming pool is the universe and a HO molecule is equivalent to a Higgs Boson. As you cannot see water molecule in a swimming pool you cannot see the Higgs boson in the Higgs Field. About 48 years ago, Peter Higgs and a few other scientists postulated this theory. The mathematics behind the theory was so wonderful that people started liking it.when most scientists agreed on the idea and were able to convince governments, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) experiment came to life in The Indian government has spent USD 40 million for the experiment and about 100 Indians have played a substantial role in the experiment. The total budget of the project is $10 billion. It took 20 years of hard work by over 10,000 scientists around the world to build these pyramids of the 21st Century. Along with students from India, other Indians studying in the U.S. and universities around the world also contribute to a great extent. After years of hard work we started taking data in 2010 March. By the end of 2011, there was no success but we got a few hints about the mass of the particle. In 2012 March- June, we started seeing positive results, says Rajiv who personally contributed by selecting the interesting data to be recorded for detailed study, called trigger system in scientific terms. Nagar. phones , , and Conservancy operations in all zones to be privatised The Chennai Corporation Council on July 25 approved the proposal for gradual privatisation of conservancy operations in all zones of the city. Conservancy operations in zones such as Teynampet, Kodambakkam, Adyar and parts of Ambattur have already been privatised. As part of the efforts of the Chennai Corporation to shortlist suitable technology for remediation and scientific closure of the Perungudi and Kodungaiyur dump yards, the civic body also sought privatisation of conservancy operations in all the 15 zones. The action was initiated a few months ago in the Chennai Corporation will rope in private agencies to create multilevel parking lots on all major roads in the city. The civic body has called for expression of interest from entities such as private firms and joint ventures on construction and maintenance of multilevel parking facilities in all major roads on a DBOT (Design, Build, Operate and Transfer) basis. The private agencies will identify suitable spots including Corporation lands near major roads that require additional parking space. The agency will also come up with a detailed project report and a suitable revenue model for the parking lots. The agency will choose a suitable parking system for each location based on the existing civic conditions. The decision to involve private entities has been taken as the wake of the National Green Tribunal setting aside the environmental clearance granted by the Tamilnadu Government to the integrated solid waste management facility in Perungudi. Apart from the initiative of reversing the environmental damage in Perungudi and Kodungaiyur, the civic body had invited expression of interest for two more solid waste management initiatives from multinational companies. This included the design of a scalable and modular plant with a future capacity of processing 10,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste per day. The Government has proposed that this be declared a Centre of Excellence, said P. Moorthy, head of the department. The hospital, which is attached to the Institute of Child Health, is the only referral center run by the government for paediatric cardiac ailments. Usually the department sees 100 cases daily. Some children come with complex problems requiring specific investigations, and for this we need state-of-the art facilities, the cardiothoracic surgeon added. He said that of every 1,000 live births, eight children have cardiac diseases. At present, the cardiology department performs one open-heart surgery and two-closed heart surgeries every day, but there is always a long waiting list of patients. The funds will be used to build two floors and a modular state-ofthe art operation theater. The hospital will also procure equipment worth Rs. 18 crores, including a cath lab. It has also proposed to establish an intensive care unit with 12 beds. The Health Department has also sanctioned 49 new posts for cardiothoracic surgeons, cardiologists, anaesthesiologists, cath lab technicians, nurses and hospital workers, said V.
