SCOTTISH RITE BULLETIN 3 FROM THE VENERABLE MASTER Brethren, The Spring Class has Progressed Splendidly!!! We were on time for the entire Saturday!!! Cast and Crew were Spot On with the schedule. Congratulations to the Class for getting the 14th Degree, which concludes the ineffable degrees. You are Now Full Members of the Lodge of Perfection!! You are now entering the Chapter of Rose Crois, Enjoy!!! Membership!!!!! Here is another observation I ve made. In Business Time is Money! Let s apply that to Meetings of Volunteers. If Meetings are long and non productive Volunteers lose interest. If Meetings are not Relevant, Volunteers lose interest. In a study published some time ago by Grand Lodge, it was noted that Members and Prospective Members have very little Disposable Time! If we waste their time we lose them. Relevance was also listed in the Study. Here is a thought that is applied in Business. If you have 30 workers and the Job Stops you Lose One Collective Man Hour every two Minutes. Time is Money. Mark Hodges Venerable Master FROM THE WISE MASTER March proved to be a very busy and enjoyable month. The Chapter along with many of the brethren and their ladies made visitations to several of the youth events throughout the Valley. I would like to thank everyone for their attendance at the various events. I hope you all enjoyed being there as much as the kids enjoyed having you. I have nothing but the greatest respect for all the boys, girls and adults, who take the time to be their youth advisors. By attending these events you have the opportunity to witness the development of our future leaders. The officers of the Chapter Rose Croix are preparing for their duties for the month of April. We are excited to work with the new class and ready to answer any of their questions in regard to the degrees associated with our Lodge. Also, we are looking forward to our roles in preparation for the Maundy Thursday Celebration to be held at the Scottish Rite on April 21, We hope you all can attend. Our banquet chairman, Alan Miller

SCOTTISH RITE BULLETIN 4 33, will be preparing a wonderful meal for all to enjoy. Please don t forget to call the office with your reservation for the dinner. After dinner, we welcome the ladies to join us in the lodge room to view the events of Maundy Thursday. Thank you again for supporting our youth and we look forward to seeing you at the stated meeting and Maundy Thursday. FROM THE MASTER OF KADOSH Brethren, David Pitts, Wise Master This month we will be participating in our Maundy Thursday event and I would like to encourage you all to attend. Though many of us have great time commitments which often limit our participation in Masonry this is on such occasion in which we remember our departed Brothers and honor them with our presence. I know that banquet committee has prepared an excellent menu for us to enjoy. I look forward to partaking with you this month. Fraternally Yours, Andrew Miller Master of Kadosh of the Consistory FROM THE COMMANDER, COUNCIL KADOSH The Electronic Book craze caught my eye recently. Society is transitioning into a new era of information distribution. Schools and Universities are starting up pilot programs by converting textbooks to E-Book format. Even public libraries are getting into the mix; offering electronic checkouts of books through the use of an internet website. You read the checked-out book on the computer screen as the website program counts down the days you can still read it. Will books soon be obsolete? Will students someday use only electronic devices to conduct study and research? How does this phenomenon relate to

SCOTTISH RITE BULLETIN 5 our very own Valley of Fresno Scottish Rite Library? The book Fahrenheit 451 came to mind. It was written by popular science fiction writer Ray Bradbury in Bradbury writes about a dystopian society where critical thinking is virtually eliminated by government controlled electronic communications. The people are pacified and numbed by a bombardment of mindless TV shows and propaganda. Books are outlawed, found and burned by firemen because of the disruptive knowledge the books contain. What is implied here is the absolute control of information; the prevention of passing on knowledge deemed disruptive by the oppressive and tyrannical government. The E-Book would have been a perfect plot device in Bradbury s story; allowing the dystopian government to immediately censor any previously downloaded information or literary work recently deemed as hostile or revolutionary. At the end of the book the heroes of the story begin to memorize entire books in order to preserve and verbally distribute the knowledge in the future. My piece this month was to implant in your mind that the E-Book and other similar devices at the present time should not be considered as a primary source for Masonic research. Why? The E-Book library contains books that are determined by the publishers to be mainstream or best sellers. Most of the new books seem to contain old research and ideas; re-hashed over and over again for profit s sake. It is in the old works that contain the original thought or research; works that due to lack of popularity will never again be published either by electronic or hardback form unintentionally censored from public awareness or view. Some of these books can be found in our very own Valley of Fresno Scottish Rite Library. Ray Bradbury will be turning 91 in August. He absolutely dislikes E-Books and still believes in the operative use of the old fashioned hardbound. He refuses to grant the electronic publication of his works to E-Book companies. Fahrenheit 451 happens to be one of the most popular and well know works of science fiction of all time. It makes me wonder why Amazon.com called their E-Book Kindle in the first place; such irony; an inside joke perhaps? See you at the library! Vincent A Villarta Commander of Kadosh Secretary s Corner Happy Easter! The 2 nd day of the Spring 2011 Class will be April 9 th, the 15 th through the 29 th degree will be presented. Breakfast is at 7:30 am. We will be having two meetings at Scottish Rite this month. The Stated Meeting and dinner will be Monday April 18 th, and Maundy Thursday Meeting and dinner Thursday April 21 st. Reservations are required for both. Thank you to everyone for making reservations consistently lately! I would like to thank Mrs. Becky Davis for guiding our ladies discussion during the Stated Meeting in March. Does anyone have any ideas for April for the ladies to do during the Stated Meeting? Please start bringing your Auction items to the office. Juliet Vitz Office Secretary

SCOTTISH RITE BULLETIN 6 From Adan Bautista It has been about three months since I wrote regarding one of my coworkers being very vocal about how much she disliked Freemasons. Notice that I said, disliked Freemasons as in past tense. After three months she came to me and apologized. What compels me to write about it is not because of her apology, although it feels good to know that there are still good, reasonable people in this world. I m writing because she explained why she spoke about Masons the way she did, and also because she found the truth on her own. She told me that her grandfather is a Mason, and that ever since she can remember he has been abusive to his family. She assumed it was because he was a Mason. I understand that not knowing any better, she would have such a bad concept of Freemasonry in general. All these three months since the little incident happened, I have been nice to her, I always say hi, and haven t shown any hard feelings toward her. It is precisely my attitude, according to her, that led her to do her own research about Freemasonry and its teachings. Reading about Masonry she has found that Masons like to help their communities, and that Masons do a lot of good stuff. In the March/April issue of the Scottish Rite Journal, Ill. Brother Ronald A. Seale in page 2 gives us examples of good and bad Masonic practices. He is trying to remind us that the eyes of the world and the fraternity are upon us. Let us remember that we should meet all people on the level, act by the plumb, and when we go out to the world, part upon the square. April Stated Menu Traveling the globe has been one of the great joys of my career. Kings, Prince and Potentates alike have enjoyed my culinary specialities. Preparing something for my Brethren and their ladies and friends has, however, given me the greatest pleasure in life. My visit to the Prince of Mia Atloaf in the small country of Tulafres (To-La-Fres) this past week was one of the luckiest visits of my career. While basking by his pool and thinking about a nice lavish dinner for the family, a villager happened by and his cart full of vegetables broke down. Hastily, I rushed to his rescue and of course was awarded with an incredible selection of the finest vegetables in the country. I gathered by booty and went straight to the kitchen and prepared what turned out to be the best meal every created in Tulafres. The Prince s favorite was ground beef, however, he had never had it with the ingredients I added to the beef. He was ecstatic after the first bite. The Prince of Mia Atloaf proclaimed it a remarkable feat and named the main dish Meat Loaf - a slight abbreviation of his village s name. The name stuck and has become a favorite of the US of A. I will prepare this very same meal for our Stated Dinner on April 18. Of course we will have mashed potatoes, brown gravy, carrots, Salad and a lovely desert. Make your reservations now. The Menu for Maundy Thursday, April 21, will be just as professionally prepared. We will have Eggplant Parmesan Casserole, mixed vegetables, salad and desert. Note, if you don t like eggplant, call the office and I will prepare a nice Chicken Breast for you.) Allan Miller, 33, Banquet Chairman

SCOTTISH RITE BULLETIN 12 SCOTTISH RITE HISTORY (Continued from March 2011 Issue) Jack V. Farson, 33º A German bookseller and Freemason, living in Paris, working under the assumed name of C. Lenning, embellished the story further in a manuscript titled Encyclopedia of Freemasonry probably written between 1822 and 1828 at Leipzig. This manuscript was later revised and published by another German Freemason named Friedrich Mossdorf ( ).Lenning stated that King James II of England, after his flight to France in 1688, resided at the Jesuit College of Clermont, where his followers fabricated certain degrees for the purpose of carrying out their political ends. By the mid-19th century, the story had gained currency. The well-known English Masonic writer, Dr. George Oliver ( ), in his Historical Landmarks, 1846, carried the story forward and even claimed that King Charles II was active in his attendance at meetings an obvious invention, for if it had been true, it would not have escaped the notice of the historians of the time. The story was then repeated by the French writers Jean-Baptiste Ragon ( ) and Emmanuel Rebold, in their Masonic histories. Rebold s claim that the high degrees were created and practiced in Lodge Canongate Kilwinning at Edinburgh are entirely false James II died in 1701 at the Palace of St. Germain en Laye, and was succeeded in his claims to the British throne by his son, James Francis Edward Stuart ( ), the Chevalier St. George, better known as the Old Pretender, but recognized as James III by the French King Louis XIV. He was succeeded in his claim by Charles Edward Stuart ( Bonnie Prince Charles ), also known as the Young Pretender, whose ultimate defeat at the Battle of Culloden in 1746 effectively put an end to any serious hopes of the Stuarts regaining the British crowns. The natural confusion between the names of the Jesuit College of Clermont, and the short-lived Masonic Chapter of Clermont, a Masonic body that controlled a few high degrees during its brief existence, only served to add fuel to the myth of Stuart Jacobite influence in Freemasonry s high degrees. However, the College and the Chapter had nothing to do with each other. The Jesuit College was located at Clermont, whereas the Masonic Chapter was not. Rather, it was named Clermont in honor of the French Grand Master, the Comte de Clermont (Louis de Bourbon, Comte de Clermont) ( ), and not because of any connection with the Jesuit College of Clermont.

SCOTTISH RITE BULLETIN 13 THE COLOR BLUE & THE BLUE LODGE I suspect that there is a lot of Blue Lodge Masons and perhaps a lot of Scottish Rite Masons that are not clear why the Symbolic Lodge is also called the Blue Lodge. Many people have made attempts to explaining it but without specific clarity. For example, not too long ago an article was written attempting to explain it by submitting a 439 wordy explanation. The net result still left residue of uncertainty as to what blue really means in the context of the Symbolic Lodge. So here it is. As stated in the twenty-third degree of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite Higher Degrees. The color blue is emblematical of God s profound and perfect Wisdom. * So, there you have it, and it only took five words!! When we take the time and effort to study and reflect upon the Higher Degrees of Freemasonry our symbols and allegories become a lot simpler and clearer to understand. It has been said that the Masonic Lodge symbolizes a living temple of intellect within each of its Brothers. It is his duty as a member of this great fraternity always to strive towards that Divine Light of Wisdom. By seeking knowledge you will gain Wisdom. The Blue Lodge is the beginning of a life long journey the initiate takes towards knowledge, metaphorically identified as Light. ** My fellow brother Masons, are you a seeker of Light? Are you one of those Masons Albert Pike calls Children of Light? Brother John L. Tracy 32 * A Bridge to Light A Study in Masonic Ritual & Philosophy by Rex R.
