3 SCOTTISH RITE BULLETIN 3 From the Personal Representative Greetings Brethren, the 2010 Spring Class is already moving forward, maybe not as large as our last November Class, however, the new candidates appear to be enjoying the degrees portrayed by the actors. Degree Director General Mike Nella, 32 KCCH is working very close with all of the Degree Directors and players of each degree and upgrading some of the scenes with some new equipment as needed. We are now performing most of the new degrees which some of the new Degrees are a little shorter than the old degrees. I received a copy of the Messenger, a publication of the George Washington Masonic Memorial with an interesting article regarding the Centennial Celebration of the first meeting and the founding of the George Washington Masonic National Memorial. The Association celebrated with a day of festive events on February 22, 2010, George Washington s 278th birthday and will take place in nearby Arlington, Virginia. A new portrait of George Washington as a Freemason will be unveiled at this meeting. The portrait, by Virginia artist Christopher Erney was commissioned by the Memorial Association and will present a new interpretation of Washington along with a new video debuted. Prints of the portrait were available at the meeting. The video focuses on George Washington as the inspiration for the founding of America and the founding of the George Washington Masonic National Association. The video is sponsored by the Masonic Charity Foundation of Oklahoma and will be available in DVD format and as a download from the Memorial Website. The Memorial President is Anthony P. Wardlow better known as Illustrious Tony Wardlow, 33 Past Grand Master of Masons in California. Tony has been a visitor in our Valley of Fresno on many occasions. In the article Illustrious Wardlow speaks about the greatness of George Washington and the vast esteem, admiration and unequaled awe of him and his immortal words deeply embedded in our memory: First in War, first in peace and first in the hearts of his Countrymen. We are grateful for the leadership and devotion this great General, President and Mason gave to this great United States of America. If you are ever near the area I highly recommend that you visit the Memorial, I am sure you will enjoy it. The Memorial plays a crucial role in helping to understand who we are as Masons and as Americans through the inspiring example of George Washington. The last 100 years was conceived, financed, constructed and is maintained by the donations of Freemasons all across the Country - from New England, the Atlantic Seaboard, the South, the Midwest, the Southwest the Central Plains, the Northwest, indeed all America has an enduring tribute to the memory and legacy of the father of our Country. The Memorial and House of the Temple is
4 SCOTTISH RITE BULLETIN 4 experiencing an upsurge in visitation. The Memorial is a popular venue for performances, exhibitions and Community events. The Memorial needs financial help for the future and that help will maintain the legacy for the future. You can get more information on the George Washington Masonic Memorial on your computer at or write for information to the George Washington Masonic Memorial, 101 Callahan Drive. Alexandria, Virginia VA I hope you will join with us at our Stated Dinner meeting March 15, We have an excellent Banquet Chairman that has traveled the world to bring you his specialities read the menu for March. Please join with us and call the office for dinner reservations From the Master of Kadosh I said in my first article as Master that I was going to present the 31st and 32nd degrees during the year in my notes to you. Like many in the business world I tend to like everything I read in an Executive Summary format. In that way it must get to the main points, but leave a trail of references that support the assertions made by the author. The reader can then easily refer back if the message is unclear. I have tried to do something like that below. Choosing the Thirty-first Degree as a starting point, I will be working at greater enlightenment and higher moral training. You will be referred to new sources like, The Scottish Rite Ritual Monitor and Guide developed by Ill. Arturo de Hoyos, 33º Grand Archivist and Grand Historian and published with the approval of the Supreme Council, 33º, for the Southern Jurisdiction. This book is a basic source for some of the information that is communicated in the Scottish Rite Master Craftsman learning and enlightenment program. I have, as in past included observations and references to the work of Ill. Albert Pike, 33º and Ill. Henry Clausen, 33º Past Sovereign Grand Commander and have decided to continue with the use of those scholarly observations and writings. The Ill. Arturo de Hoyos, 33º, in a synopsis of the Thirty-first Degree presents an allegorical representation of the final judgment common in most of the world s religions. It is portrayed within the context of ancient Egyptian mythology, which shares many similarities with the Judeo-Christian religions. A major lesson must be that we represent well the Order and as such must be noble examples to our fellow man in our everyday interaction. We must
5 SCOTTISH RITE BULLETIN 5 maintain dignity and our actions must be a reflection of our teachings. The Ill. Albert Pike, 33º, seems to say that, like the preceding degrees in Masonry, the Thirty-first is especially important to the true Mason as he becomes prepared to be called upon to exercise judicial powers and that preparation requires one to hear patiently, to weigh deliberately and dispassionately, and to decide impartially. We are reminded that as we judge so shall we be judged by God after our time on earth is over. In this way the mason can live and contribute to the things that will come in the future after life on earth. In the Thirty-first Degree Ill. Pike, give us many examples of proper actions as we judge others. In his writings he refers to many acclaimed examples where judicial ability is a virtue and how those judgements can be used by mankind on earth, but then shows that God s judgment may be somewhat differently made in heaven. He shows that these concepts have then been captured in many other parts of our Masonic teachings. Similarly, the Ill. Henry C. Clausen suggested that a Mason must always be mindful of his actions and always be prepared to Self Examine those actions to see if they were and continue to be good and decent. Knowing that we all make poor choices and come short of that noble goal, we must, after self examination try to improve our future actions and interactions with our fellowman. Simply said, wrongs of today should not be committed tomorrow. These are some of the lessons taught by the Thirty-first Degree. Inspector Inquisitor information was gained from and refers to pages in the Ill. Clausens, 33º COMMENTARIES and to pages in the Ill. Pikes, 33º MORALS AND DOGMA and to pages in Ill. Arturo de Hoyos 33º SCOTTISH RITE RITUAL. These are my observations of these scholars, as greater insight and understanding of the intent and objectives of Scottish Rite Masonry is needed, I suggest that each mason review these teachings from time to time and refresh our dedication to the principals of our order. Bernie Hollenbeck, 32º KCCH Sigmund de Guzman, 32 KCCH, Venerable Master of the Lodge of Perfection has been very concerned that many of the Brethren do not distinguish some word pronunciations. His Filipino linguistic skills are exceptional and his English therefore has softer intonations. He said he is striving for perfection and at one of our Advisory Conferences replied to the Personal Representative: I have devoted many hours articulating and verbalizing certain challenging linguistic forms, annunciating and pronouncing English utterances, forming specific audio sounds accurately and intricately for distinctiveness and clarity. It is hoped that you will be pleased with my unquestionable quest for perfection as Master of the Lodge of Perfection. The Personal Representative complimented Sigmund for his efforts and noted that he was indeed doing and outstanding job as the Venerable Master.
6 SCOTTISH RITE BULLETIN 6 March Stated Dinner - Meat Loaf: Traditionally trade secrets, especially recipes that are handed down from one generation to another are jealously guarded, rarely written out in detail and sometimes kept in a very secure safe, in a jar in the basement and sometime buried in the back yard sealed in a water tight container. My Meat Loaf recipe is just such a treat. During the Early 17th Century on the Island of Guernsey off the coast of England my Great, Great, Great Grandmother Elizabeth Meatloafstra was rushing to feed the harvest crew. She started cutting a side of beef into thin strips and not being very careful, wielding her cleaver wildly, shredded the entire side of beef into a massive unmanageable meat pile which fell on the ground. Hence Ground Beef. Elizabeth immediately put mounds of this beef into manageable piles, selected her largest baking pans and of course using her special spices, mixed the piles into loaves. Baked it to perfection. The crew enjoyed the meat so much they insisted on it being served regularly. When requesting this meal they called it by her last name MeatLoafstra, which was later shortened to Meat Loaf. The spices are a secret and you will be pleasantly surprised by the taste of the meal. Come and enjoy this old English style Meat Loaf served with mashed potatoes & gravy, green beans, salad and a dessert. Call your reservations in now. Allan Miller, Banquet Chairman NOTICE DATE CHANGE FOR MARCH: THE ACTING AND DRAMA TECHNIQUE SEMINAR WILL BE HELD ON TUESDAY, MARCH 2. In concert with the in-service training programs from the Executive Council, there will be a monthly seminar beginning in February designed specifically for all Degree Cast members and Directors. The first Monday of each month (starting at 6:30 P. M.) I will host an acting and drama technique seminar designed specifically for actors. This will be held in the theater and it will be the same presentation each time which allow you to chose the most convenient time for you to attend. I will continue the seminars as long as there is interest. Please plan to attend. My goal: All of you will be able to participate in one or more of the seminars, to give you confidence, stage savvy and drama techniques. And by doing so: We will improve individually, our degrees will improve and above all else we can share our knowledge with one another. Mike Nella, Degree Director General Building a Scholarship Donations Thank you to all who are supporting Building a Scholarship fund. Your continued donations will allow us to expand our scholarship program and continue to support the deserving students of the C.A.R.T. School. John Tallmadge Robert Myers Juliet Vitz
