3 14 3 Support your Scottish Rite Language Center Is it possible to make a major gift to your Scottish Rite Language Center and still enjoy a source of income and tax benefit from the gift? The answer is, yes; through a Charitable Remainder Trust, or split interest, tax-exempt trust. This trust has two beneficiaries; the individual making the gift, income beneficiary, and their selected charity, the trust beneficiary. How does it work: The individual making the gift receives an income tax charitable deduction when the assets are placed into the trust. The assets are then placed into an investment portfolio. Periodically, Income generated by the trust is paid to the income beneficiary for life or a specific period of years (20 years or less). At the end of the trust, the remaining principal will pass to the selected charity. Wise Master s commentary, continued from page 3 in this program and his parents got on the waiting list for our language center. He was brought into the program 1 ½ years ago and the progress was truly remarkable. His vocabulary increased 300 % in just a few months and today he has almost caught up with his peers. It appears, if this progress continues, that he will enter school next year, into regular classes and will be in the main stream of the school. Clarke s family is so grateful to our speech pathologist and the Scottish Rite for all they do for our children, Brethren please don t forget our Language Center. By the way, Clarke is my Grandson. Dandridge 33 Wise Master Chapter of Rose Croix As this will be my last opportunity to express my feelings to you in writing, allow me to thank you for giving me the privilege of serving the Pasadena Scottish Rite as your Wise Master. The Rose Croix is, in my opinion, the most beautiful of all the Scottish Rite work and I was extremely happy and proud to work through the line of that body. Your help and encouragement has meant a great deal to me in my Scottish Rite career. In November we will honor our Brethren of the York Rite. Many of their leaders will be with us for dinner and entertainment. We will also, in November present the Roy J. Hennivlle Award to one of our very worthy members. Be sure to make every effort to be with us on that night. My Brethren at the annual communication of our Grand Lodge on Oct. 2nd thru the 4th, it was reported that the Mason s of California gave more money to our Masonic charity s than ever before. This in the midst of the troubled economy our nation is going through. Brethren please remember our charity. Our Children s Language center does outstanding and amazing work. Let me tell you about one of the children being helped. Clarke is a 4 ½ year old boy who was diagnosed 3 years ago as being high function autistic. He was several months behind in his language skills and also in several other skills which were contributing to various problems with his overall social development. Clarke s parents were very lucky to find out when they did, and started looking for help right away. The Los Angeles City schools have pre-school programs for kids with learning problems. 4 4 13 Fall 2009 Degree Schedule By Ed Griffiths, 32º, KCCH Director of the Work The following dates and times have been scheduled for the Fall 2009 practices and Degrees. Please mark your calendar and notify your respective committee members. Our degree practices will involve a full complement of production personnel including lights, sound and stage. It is essential for everyone to attend practice including actors with non-speaking parts, as well as personnel from lights, sound and stage crew. The auditorium has a new sound system with remote microphones for eleven speaking parts and we need to work with these before the performance. It is my intent to have all light and sound settings made at the practices to avoid distracting last minute corrections during the performance. The cast needs to practice their stage work with the drops and essential props in place. I realize this is asking for a lot of your personal time but we need to do this in order to improve the quality of our degree performances. Please be on time for the practice sessions. If you are involved with the Friday evening Degrees and are planning to eat dinner with us, don t forget to make your reservation! Thanksgiving Proclamation Wor. Bro. 6 6 11 Wisdom, Strength, and Beauty by Arthur H. Zabounian, 32 KSA Librarian Musical Notes by Ill. Don Johansen, 33 Band Manager As Master Masons, we are all familiar with these words what we make of them, however, is dependent upon ourselves. I, on the other hand, have chosen for this particular case, the road that is less philosophical, yet more practical. Several months ago, as I was going through a list of discretionary items at the Los Angeles Scottish Rite building, I came across three pedestals which looked relatively old but useful. With our Secretary s consent, as always, these Blue Lodge paraphernalia (fixtures) were transported to their current new home our library. Before that, however, they made a quick and reconstructive stop at a carpenter s shop. These 100 years old (or thereabout) furniture made out of Walnut wood were chemically stripped and repaired to regain their STRENGTH. They were then sanded, stained and a quote of lacquer was applied to restore their BEAUTY. Now, different items from our museum collection are being displayed and written about to complement our intellect, which is enhanced through the words of WISDOM written in the pages of the books which stand against the walls of our library. So brethren, visit the library when you get a chance and witness these three beautifully restored show cases and remember the symbolism which they represent Wisdom, Strength & Beauty. Our Grand Master of Masons in California and his core of officers for 2009 and 2010, will be performing a corner stone laying ceremony at The Yorba Linda Community Center on Monday November2, The time of the ceremony is from 12:00pm-2:00pm. Brother Jim Prather, Yorba Linda Lodge #469 committee chairman for this event contacted your Pasadena Scottish Rite Concert Band to entertain musically from 11:00am-12:00am This event is a first for the band. After our constitutional observance on September 19th, The 541st Masonic District presented a Certificate Of Appreciation Award to Brother Dave Senf, 32, conductor on behalf of your concert band. Pasadena Scottish Rite Museum For about one hour prior to our Stated Meeting diners, your Pasadena Scottish Rite Museum is open for browsing. Our Special Docent who manages the Museum, Brother Walter Ralston, 32, KSA has done a whale of a job improving the viewing condition of the Museum located on the third floor. If you have never visited the Museum or of it has been a long time since you did so, plan to drop in soon. You will be impressed with the work of Brother Walter. Every item, there are hundreds, has been cataloged, photographed and identified for your viewing pleasure. Every bit of Masonic memorabilia has numbered and posted in a Directory to assist you in your viewing pleasure. Whenever possible, the donor has been identified. We re proud of Brother Walter and he s proud of our Museum. Come see his handiwork.

It may seem like a small number at the first reading, but if you are one of those 31 families, life is getting better, and this is no small difference. So, thank you. As you count your own blessings this Thanksgiving, consider putting some of them to use here at the Language Center, the staff and families will be truly grateful. 8 8 9 The 16th Degree - Prince of Jerusalem Excerpted from the upcoming Degrees of Leadership by Jim Hoerricks, 32º KSA The concept of legacy returns again in the 16th degree. The candidate is asked, will you leave the world in a better state than you found it? This time, legacy is examined from an intentional standpoint, of starting with the end in mind. In this, the second of the Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, your image of the end of your life becomes a reference by which everything else is measured. You set the image and then purposefully go about your life to fulfill your dreams and desires. The 16th Degree considers relationships in terms of the way we treat the people over whom we have power suggesting mercy and generosity. The lessons council that there may be a time when we need to restrain ourselves and be patient, temporarily resigning our own interests for another s advantage. Every Master of the Royal Secret should visit this beautiful edifice in our Nation s Capital at some time in their life. It is truly an exhilarating experience. Our newly elected Honour men had their names recorded in the Records of the Supreme Council. Congratulations to our newly elected Inspectors General Honorary and Knights Commander Court of Honor. All are most deserving of the recognition imparted upon them by their Brethren. They will receive their new Honours on Saturday, December 5, at San Diego Scottish Rite. Knights Commander Court of Honour Putting on well tuned and interesting degrees give many of them their first view of what we have to offer. Joining is the beginning. The full experience is found in participation.
