The Childhood Language Disorders Center has helped many children over its twenty years existence. My grandson was one of the many children assisted at the Fresno Language Center. I hope you will be able to attend this most memorable evening. Our Shaver Lake Fishing Derby will be Saturday June 23, The annual fundraiser Dinner Auction will be August 11th. It will be at the International Catering Co. at Ashlan and Willow Ave. Please come and support the Childhood Language Disorders Clinic. It is always a fantastic evening! Jim Wilson Venerable Master From the Wise Master My Lucky Scottish Rite Cap A month or so after I was initiated into Scottish Rite I received a pamphlet advertising Scottish Rite apparel a member could purchase. I decided to purchase a baseball cap with the SR logo on it. Not only did the cap keep my head from getting sunburned, but it attracted questions about the meaning of the SR Logo and introduced me to other SR brothers in other valleys. Last month I had to go to San Francisco for surgery, it couldn t be done here in Fresno, I had to go 190 miles away. As I entered the Hospital Admissions Office I was met by Billy Silvera a Scottish Rite member from San Francisco. He saw my hat, we shook hands and he told me he would look after whatever my needs were. Well, the next day after my surgery, my wife s car was having brake prob-
4 SCOTTISH RITE BULLETIN 4 lems. I told her to ask Billy where the closest dealership was so she could have her car towed there. Billy wouldn t hear of having her go to a dealership. He instead, went with her and the tow truck to another Scottish Rite brother s business for repairs. After checking out the car he said he would have it ready the next day. Because it was noon, the repairman invited my wife to join him for lunch in the restaurant next door. The next day the car was ready and my wife was able to transport me back home to Fresno. All of this happened because of the kindness and consideration of a Scottish Rite brother who I met because I was wearing my Lucky Scottish Rite Cap. This reminded me not only can you benefit; but that you can be that person who can help others in need. I still wear my cap; maybe you might want to get one too. Dale Hammel Wise Master From The Commander, Council Kadosh you there. Brethren On Thursday April 5 th the Scottish Rite will observe our annual Maundy Thursday celebration of remembrance and renewal. All members are encouraged to attend. This ceremony is open to all of our friends and family so be sure and invite them to attend. One of the primary parts of this ceremony is to remember our Scottish Rite brothers who have passed on in the last year. The Spring class begins on Friday, April 6 and continues on the next two Saturday s April 7 and April 14. We would like as many brothers on the sidelines as possible. I look forward to seeing In the Council of Kadosh the person who assists with the presentation of our flag (called expert in the lodge of Perfection) is called the Turcopolier. The title Turcopolier (tur-co-po-lier) in the Order of the Knights Templar was the commander, usually a knight, who commanded the sargent brothers of the order. The sargent brothers were support troops who did not have to be of noble birth as did the knights of the order. They were equipped as a knight but had only one horse and no squires compared to a knight who had three horses and a squire. The Turcopolier led his men into battle surrounded by a guard of knights. Bill Pfister 32º KCCH Commander of the Council of Kadosh
5 SCOTTISH RITE BULLETIN 5 From The Master Of Kadosh It s not often in our busy lives that we hear about the good things happening within our community. The daily news reports usually detail the worse of mankind not the best. I am proud to report that the Fresno Scottish Rite Center and the Masons of our community are making a HUGE difference in the lives of children and their families. Our Americanism & Patriotism program has started and the 5 th graders are doing their best to win one of our bicycles. Winners will be selected at the end of March and presented their bicycles at our April stated meeting. We still need donations to pay for the bicycles. Our CART High School Scholarship program is officially open for applicants. The students are going through the rigors of the application process at CART through March and interviews will take place in April. Winners will be present for our May stated meeting. We still need $2,000 in donations to fulfill four $750 scholarships. Our Junior ROTC program has sent selection criteria to the JROTC Commanders and award winners should be selected in April. All Masons who volunteered to present the awards throughout the valley should be ready to be called on during May and June graduation weeks. Our Children s Language Disorder Center is continuing to perform at the highest level of achievement for our young clients. We need to increase the hours available for treatment and that requires funding. For every $50 donated to the Clinic - a child receives an hour of treatment. We have several events coming up to help raise money for the clinic. I hope you will help by getting the information out to the community and participating in the events personally. On April 15 th the Friends of the Center Guild is sponsoring a Trap Shoot at the Kingsburg Gun Club from 10am to 2pm. Call for details. In closing, I am grateful and thankful for the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of the children within our community. I am proud to be a Mason, knowing my efforts help make the world (and myself) better, one child at a time. Fraternally, David S. Kelley, 32 Save the Date: Annual Dinner Auction August 11th, 2012
6 SCOTTISH RITE BULLETIN 6 WHAT SHOULD YOU SAY? Perhaps some of your non-masonic friends, relatives, church leaders, bosses and co-workers have posed these questions to you: Is Masonry a secret organization? Is Masonry a Religion? My answer to those two pertinent questions is that we are not a secret organization. We are an organization with secrets. Yes we are by definition an occult, not a cult. Look these words up in the dictionary. You can also describe Coca Cola, Pfizer, and Apple as occults. They too have secrets. Regarding the second question, we are not an organization immersed in Theology. Masonry is an exercise in logic for the purpose of studying the principles underlying conduct, thought and the nature of the universe. We are a Philosophical Society. The more our Brethren learn about the Mysteries of our Craft the better we are prepared to respond to questions, some based on preconceived and inaccurate notions by the general public. It is an enlightened adept of our secrets that can best serve as our fraternity s spokesman. All of us should strive to be ambassadors for Masonry. It appears to me that many within our Craft appear uncomfortable answering questions about Masonry. In my view, they do not have a firm understanding of our Craft s Mysteries. So their response to inquirers is, in so many words: before you can receive answers to certain questions you have to join our fraternity and become a Master Mason. And then they go on by saying we are a beneficent society helping those in need; and gather together in harmony within our respective Masonic Temples for the purpose of enjoying pleasant association and conducting rituals. To me, these responses seem vague and do not adequately address what the deeper purpose Masonry serves, or should serve. Efforts in reading, studying and then reflecting upon the mysteries of Freemasonry through Master Craftsman I and II Correspondence Courses were immensely helpful in my ability to answer with specificity questions pertaining to Masonry. With the exception of pass words, hand shakes and signs given within the confines of a tiled lodge room, my response to those who inquire is that I invite them to ask any question and I promise to answer it precisely in terms they can understand. If we want the general public to have an accurate understanding of what the Masonic Brotherhood is about, or should be about, we need to explain with clarity what is truly meant when it is said: Masonry is a system of morality, veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols. 10 SCOTTISH RITE BULLETIN 10 History of Freemasonry The Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite Jack V. Farson 33º In the British Empire and the United States of America, the term high degrees is now generally applied to the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of 33º. The Egyptian Rite of Mizraim and Memphis, etc, exist, all of which have their own admirers and followers, but the Supreme Councils of the Scottish Rite appear to be the only universally acknowledged and legally constituted systems in their several jurisdictions. In a sketch like this, it is impossible to enter fully into the history of the Rites; let it suffice to say, that the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, or Scottish Masonry, is derived from a body formerly known in France, called The Emperors of the East and West, who had organized a rite known as that of Perfection, established in Paris, 1758 consisting of twenty-five degrees, to which eight final ones were added gradually, from time to time, towards the end of the last century, although conflicting statements have been made as to their French parentage. The Thirty-Third Degree. The Rite has been called by its present name since It is divided into seven distinct sections, each section being under a separate and special authority. On being brought to America, it appeared first as the Rite of Perfection, a Hebrew Mason, Stephen Morin, having received, in 1761, from the Councils of the Emperors of the East and West, a patent to confer the degrees of the Rite. A Grand Lodge was formed in Charleston, 1783, and a Supreme Council 33º opened there in It was introduced into England from the United States of America in 1845, but only the 18 th and 30 th degrees were conferred, all the intermediate degrees between the Master Mason and 30 th being communicated by name only. These two degrees, the 18 th and 30 th, had been known and practiced in the English Templar system, as the Rose Croix and Kadosh, for many years before the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite was instituted. By the surrender of these two degrees, the Rite was intended to supersede the Masonic Templar system in England; for, in the first statutes of the Rite there, it will be seen that so averse was the Supreme Council to the Masonic Templar system that candidates for the Rite, and the time of being admitted, were allowed to wear the jewels of any other Masonic rank that had obtained excepting that of the Masonic Templars, the idea being to absorb Templar, as then practiced in England, into the Rite. (Credit; History of Freemasonry and Concordant Orders. Copyright 1890 by Lee C. Hascall). REGIONAL ORIENT MEMBERSHIP AMBASSADOR S MESSAGE FOR April 2012 Our broad system of ethics comes from the Masonic heart of goodness, forgiveness and kindness. It is the science of humanity that we teach. In the moral world, we have been sometimes taught that, upon this earth, sin is cursed; misery is the normal condition; he who gets any honey out of this life, steals it; the greater happiness of this life arises from disobedience and, if one has a troubled conscious
11 SCOTTISH RITE BULLETIN 11 and sleepless nights by reason of some great wrong he has done to his fellow man, repentance is to be found in tears and prayers, rather than restitution. By contrast Masonic ethics teach us to believe, not only in prayer and repentance, but also to regard restitution as the best evidence of repentance. Our ethical degrees direct us to intensify friendships and brotherhood between men by quieting disagreements and constantly working towards the betterment of all. We must bring happiness and generate good will in the lives of all with whom we come into contact. We should induce the estranged to become amicable, teaching that living the power of laughter, brotherly love, relief and truth is to live a heavenly Masonic life. Making people smile and laugh is consistent with the gratitude, joy and cheer we receive in learning about and practicing our degrees. It is among the many responsibilities of those with a Masonic heart to produce growth by recruiting the worthy and well-qualified to become Masters of the Royal Secret. The magnificent passkey we offer to these candidates is the opportunity to know and understand the great central thought that inspired the universe, Man! Remember to go out to your Masonic Lodges and bring new members to our Scottish Rite. Durward C. Ayre Durward C.
