2 REV. ANTONY A. JOSEPH, ASSOCIATE PASTOR WE LOSE WHAT WE KEEP, AND WE GAIN WHAT WE GIVE AWAY In an age when many of us find it difficult to make ends meet, our contemporary society overwhelms us with a set of values based on the need for material security. It judges our success by the size of our bank account, the extent of our possessions, and the exclusiveness of the area in which we live. But the wisdom that comes from God measures differently and ranks power and riches as nothing. There is more to life than what is immediately apparent, and spiritual values run deeper than worldly standards and worldly success. Rev. Antony A. Joseph The rich young man in today s Gospel, who prided himself on his goodness, had only one thing in mind when he approached Jesus with the question, What must I do to inherit everlasting life? This young man had the best of everything the world could offer wealth and security. However, he wanted the kind of lasting peace and happiness that money could not buy for him. The answer he received was not the kind of answer he was looking for. He protested that he kept all the commandments. He had done nothing wrong in his life. But Jesus spoke to the trouble in his heart. One thing kept him from giving himself wholeheartedly to God. While he lacked nothing in material goods, he was nonetheless possessive of what he had. He placed his hope and security in what he possessed. So when Jesus challenged him to make God his one true possession and treasure, he became sad and went away. Why did the young man go away from Jesus with great sorrow and sadness rather than with joy? Because his treasure and his hope for happiness were misplaced. Jesus challenged the young man because his heart was possessive. He was afraid to give or share his wealth with others for fear that he would lose what he had gained. He sought happiness and security in what he possessed rather than in God. So Jesus told his disciples that if they wanted to follow him, they must give up everything: sell everything they consider precious in this life for the treasure of the kingdom of God. Treasure has a special connection to the heart, which is the place of desire and longing, the place of will and focus. The thing we most set our heart on is our highest treasure. For many people that treasure is material wealth because wealth can bring safety, security and comfort in life. To a certain extent it is true. However, wealth can also give us a false sense of independence and lead us into hurtful desires and selfishness. This is why Jesus was cautious about wealth although He was not opposed to it per se, nor was he opposed to the wealthy. In fact, Jesus had several friends who were wealthy, including some notorious tax collectors, and one even became his disciple. So the question we have to answer today is this: What is the greatest treasure in life? Is it the Lord Jesus? If you answered Yes, then you have chosen correctly. He is our greatest treasure, nothing else. No money, wealth, power, authority, fame or prestige can replace Him. Look at the parable in the Gospel of Matthew 13:44. It is Jesus parable about the kingdom of God like a treasure hidden in a field. A man found it, and out of joy he went and sold everything he had and bought that field. Today s Gospel, therefore, presents us with a paradox: we lose what we keep, and we gain what we give away. When we lose our lives for Jesus Christ, we gain a priceless treasure and an inheritance which last forever in heaven. Whatever we give to God comes back a hundredfold. Generosity flows from a heart that is full of gratitude for the abundant mercy and grace which God grants, and generosity will be amply repaid by God not only in this life, but also in the life to come. God bless you. Eucharistic Adoration Sundays 3 6 p.m. in the Church NEW! Holy Hour Adoration & Rosary Weekdays at Noon Parish Center Chapel Holy Hour for Healing With the permission of the pastor, each Holy Hour will be offered, among other purposes, for the holiness, purification, and healing of the entire Church, both clergy and laity, at this difficult time. This broad statement of purpose does not preclude other intentions from being included on a day-to-day basis. But the great importance of this question seemed to suggest the need to focus especially on that.

6 6 Saint Mary Parish Evanston, Illinois October 14, 2018 RESPECT LIFE Church, Please Come Clean Don t keep us, the lay faithful, in an ever more difficult position on the clergy sex scandal. By your silence and inaction, you re compounding the hurt of victims. You re rocking our faith. You re making the Good News you, Church, propose about Jesus less and less credible to the world. Candlelight Rosary for Life Join us Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in the Parish Center Chapel. We begin in darkness, lighting one candle per bead until the room is enlightened by our prayers. The rosary will conclude by 7:00 p.m. and the Chapel will remain open for those who wish to stay for private prayer Candlelight Rosary: Tuesdays, October 23 & 30, 7-8:30 p.m. You are our home away from heaven s home. We love you. But you don t seem to trust us or manifest the Spirit of Truth. We want to follow the Vicar of Christ on earth and our local shepherds. We want to believe they re not covering up great evil they, their charges or those they wish to please have done. We re even, as Christ has told us we must be, ready to forgive the worst of them. We re sinners too. But you ve told us to hate sin, to cleanse our house of it, to discharge our solemn responsibility to courageously identify and denounce evil. Christifideles Laici, Post-Synodal Apostalic Exhortation of John Paul, 14 Help us do this by coming clean with us. Calling victims or those who speak up gossips, satanic accusers, political ideologues, people distracted by unimportant agendas is intimidation, a toxic form of clericalism. Mischaracterizing the current crisis as one limited to abuse of children doesn t help either. If you don t get about the business of more fully revealing the truth of what you know about the scandal, others will. They already are. They have subpoena power and a will to use it. One thing we do know. Sexual abuse and misconduct, in any of its malignant forms, by anyone is an assault on the dignity of the human person. That s true when clerics, whether priest, bishop, cardinal or higher, engage in sexual intimacy, with or without consent, with boys or men, with young girls or grown women. (Yes, it s just as true of us when we, non-clerics, are sexually intimate outside marriage or unfaithful to a spouse.) We don t, dear Mother Church, have all the solutions. We do know that among us are those who can fairly and competently get at the truth of the scandal and assist in purifying you. Come, Holy Spirit, Source of all Truth, come and lead those who lead the Church to wisely come clean. Stewardship Sunday s electronic collection posts on the second week of the month.
