6 6 Saint Mary Parish Evanston, Illinois December 31, 2017 RESPECT LIFE The Joy of Hope Despite distressing realities all around us, the new year holds much joy. True, there are Kim Jong-un s missiles and Putin s neo Lebensraum; swelling ranks of nones who in adulthood have shed their religious beliefs; the continuing hemorrhage of broken hearts and souls chronicled on #MeToo in the wake of the Weinstein Affaire; and an alarming increase in the number of Americans who ve turned bearish on democracy. Don t despair. Mary Eberstadt, senior research fellow at the Faith and Reason Institute and author of several important books, mentions signs of emerging hope in our hour of paganization: Even the dominance of the secularist church in familiar venues looks to be less monolithic than is usually understood. Witness again how the conflagration that started with Harvey Weinstein has gone on to illuminate wrongdoing elsewhere, on the part of others who have acted on the premise that women are available for recreational sex anywhere and anytime. Meanwhile, new Catholic and other Christian associations proliferate on campuses and elsewhere, despite fierce secularist pushback. If the rise in nones is one emblematic story of our time, so too is the birth of countercultural campus communities.... and many other organic responses, both protective and proactive, to competition from the rival church of secularism. The Franciscans of the Eucharist of Chicago, promoted by Cardinal Francis George, exemplify the hope Eberstadt sees. In their words: [We] are a Catholic religious community living and serving in Chicago s West Humboldt Park neighborhood. Our life centers upon our relationship with Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. Out of our life of prayer flow our apostolates Eucharistic Adoration, service to the poor, Evangelization and teaching. We believe that if you can t see Jesus in the Eucharist, you can t see Him in the poor. These faces aren t posed. They started with two novices in late They now number eleven. Over 100 people pray daily for new vocations to their community. These apostles are young, smart, humble and on fire for Jesus. When they tell about their calling, their work, their challenges, even their frustrations, their faces exude sincerity, disarming confidence and, above all else, uncontainable joy. They don t fear tomorrow because the joy of hope conquers fear. They re not just asking, Do you see what I see? as did the child in the Christmas song Do You Hear What I Hear. In their joy, they re telling us they ve seen Jesus and they can show him to us. They re echoing the angel s words to shepherds 2000 years ago: I bring you good news of great joy. Luke 2:10-11 So, don t despair. This same joy, and with it peace, can be ours. Phil 4:4-7 MARCH FOR LIFE CHICAGO 2018 Sunday, January 14, 2 4 p.m. Federal Plaza, 50 West Adams Street, Chicago To drive down with the group from Saint Mary s, contact the Parish Office at If we have enough people, we will arrange for a bus.

Paul Stein, Pastor, St. Frances of Rome Parish In our culture, people often think faith and science are in conflict. But did you know that: The Big Bang theory of the origin of the universe was proposed by a Catholic priest? Jesuits were so influential in astronomy that 35 craters on the moon are named for Jesuit scientists? Roger Bacon, Father of the Scientific Method, was a Franciscan Friar? What really got Galileo in trouble was his insistence that the Church change her method of interpreting Scripture, even when he had insufficient evidence for heliocentrism? Official teaching allows for Catholics to believe or not believe in evolution? Refreshments served. Free-Will Offering will be taken.
