2 REFLECTION DCN. DENNIS ROBAK, DEACON Ordinary Time An extra-ordinary season The Chi-Rho is a Christian symbol usually associated with the liturgical season of Ordinary Time. It consists of the first two letters of the Greek word for Christ, Christos (anointed one). The Hebrew equivalent is Messiah. The letters that make up the Chi-Rho are: the letter Chi=X and the letter Rho=P. The fusion of these two letters into an abbreviation became a symbol for Christ also known as labarum or monogram of Constantine. This symbol was adopted as an emblem by Constantine. During Ordinary Time the Gospels of Matthew (Year A), Mark (Year B) and Luke (Year C) present in a semi-continuous manner the public ministry of Jesus beginning with the Third Sunday of Ordinary Time. The Gospel of John is read on the Second Sunday of each year and also from the Seventeenth to the Twenty-first Sunday of Year B. On these five Sundays, we hear our Lord s discourse on The Bread of Life from Chapter 6 of John s Gospel. Believe it or not, this Ordinary Time we celebrate is not a season without a theme. On the contrary, the Church celebrates the mystery of Christ in all its aspects during this liturgical season. This season is an open invitation to walk with the Lord. He comes to the shores of our daily lives, interrupts us in the midst of our busy and hectic schedules and invites us, like he did with the early disciples, to come and follow him to know the life that never ends, the Kingdom that never perishes and the treasure that will never lose its value. Ordinary Time, meaning ordered or numbered, is celebrated in two segments: from the Monday following the Baptism of Our Lord up to Ash Wednesday; and from Pentecost Monday to the First Sunday of Advent. It is a reminder that life s history is part of God s plan. The vestments worn, usually green, the color of hope and growth, is Mother Church s invitation to meditate upon the whole mystery of Christ His life, miracles and teachings in light of His Resurrection. These sessions are held on the second Monday of every other month; the next sessions is March 12. Baptisms are generally celebrated on the third Sunday of the month at 12:30 p.m. based on the liturgical calendar. Please call the Parish Office to register for the session. REGISTRATION. 6 6 Saint Mary Parish Evanston, Illinois January 28, 2018 RESPECT LIFE Why They Marched Those who recently marched for Life in cities across the country did so not only for the unborn and their mothers. They marched for the cause of respect for every human person. By His Incarnation, Christ, the Redeemer of man, ennobled human nature beyond compare. As John Paul, the Saint, taught: The Son of God, in a certain way, united himself with each man. He restored the likeness to the Creator which had been disfigured. In other words, he told us who we are. In the Saint s words: He worked with human hands, he thought with a human mind. He acted with a human will, and with a human heart he loved. Born of the Virgin Mary, he has truly been made one of us, like to us in all things except sin." Because of this intimate, real likeness, all human life, at every stage from conception to natural death, is deserving of respect. That s why they marched. More to come.
