2 REFLECTION SR. KATIE MITCHELL, FSPA, D.MIN. PASTORAL ASSOCIATE Living the Life God has Imagined for Us Many years ago I met a remarkable woman named Olivia. She lived in a tiny house in Kalaupapa on the Island of Molokai surrounded by beautiful flowers that she planted, tended and took much pride in. With great passion Olivia began to tell me her story, and as she did I noticed that her fingers were eaten away by Hansen s disease. In 1934, when she was 18 and about to be married, she was diagnosed with leprosy in Hawaii and was forcibly taken from her family and sent to Kalaupapa where she had lived ever since. What impressed me most about Olivia was her joy, her simplicity and the loving way she spoke about God. I was captivated by Olivia s joy and courage even as she battled the physical and emotional hardships in her life. She brought joy to so many and tirelessly spoke of the human dignity of those with Hansen s disease. She was one of the happiest women I have ever met, and I will never forget her. Her last words to me were Pray for Olivia! It is the gentleness, humility and joy of Olivia s life that speaks to me. Sr. Katie Mitchell Today Jesus tells us to learn from Him for He is meek and humble of heart. It is gentleness and humility that we are invited to today, rather than virtues like confidence and courage, which might be more attractive for us to focus on. This means gentleness with ourselves as well and the humility to accept our own shortcomings. Yes, Jesus wants us to learn gentleness and humility in our stress-filled lives! So often we try to control things in our lives and approach our day-to-day living as though it was a to do list. We rush through our precious days, sometimes without even thinking of God. We become over- committed and fill our time with many things that are not really important. This way of living creates a great deal of stress in our lives and affects all of our relationships. When we try to do everything, be everything, and have everything we lose what is most important: the life God has imagined for us! We may not be able to escape our culture of stress, but we can find our connection to Christ. Today we are invited to entrust all that we are to God who loves us and wants us to have prayerful hearts and peaceful spirits. We are invited to come with open hearts and open hands to the gentle and humble Jesus who will give us rest. Here are just a few ideas to live more gentle, humble lives: What if I created a daily habit of prayer even ten minutes a day? What if I practiced gentleness in my relationships, with myself and in the work I am committed to? What if I grew in humility by thinking more of God and others and less about myself? What if I became a better listener and more compassionate by listening to really hear others rather than only thinking about how to reply? What if I slowed down and fed my spirit by reading the Bible or a spiritual book? When we are connected to Christ, and give up trying to control our lives and trying to carry everything alone, we become more peaceful and prayerful and our stress lessens. When we are connected with Christ, we know that God loves us and will care for all our needs. What about all those things you are worried and anxious about? What about those things that are causing you stress? Give them to Jesus! Give control of your life to God. Come to Jesus in prayer and he will give you rest. Recently I learned that Olivia has gone home to God. Yes, we only have one life to live. Why not live the life God has imagined for us? Olivia, please pray for us!

INFANT BAPTISMS. Registration in the parish is a prerequisite. Parents are required to attend a Pre-Baptismal Preparation Session at least two months prior to scheduling a Baptism. These sessions are held on the second Monday of every other month; the next session is July 24. Baptisms are generally celebrated on the third Sunday of the month at 12:30 p.m. based on the liturgical calendar. Please call the Parish Office to register for the session. REGISTRATION. Saint Mary Parish welcomes new parishioners. Please make an appointment with the pastor. EUCHARISTIC ADORATION. Every Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. or as announced in the bulletin. MARRIAGE. Arrangements should be made with the parish at least six months in advance. RCIA - RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS. For adults or teenagers interested in becoming a Catholic and receiving the sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Eucharist or Confirmation). MINISTERS OF CARE. Ministers of care are available to bring Holy Communion to those who are home-bound, in the hospital or in a nursing home.

July 24 Contact the Parish Office to register. at Treasures from Our Tradition It s Independence Day week, and there is a link worth tracing between the Declaration of Independence and the language of liturgy. One of the signers of the Declaration on that July 4 long ago was Charles Carroll, probably the wealthiest man in the colonies and one of the few Catholics on the political scene. As a flourish to his signature, he sought to distinguish himself from other prominent citizens bearing the same name by penning Charles Carroll of Carrolltown a defiant come and get me if you dare postscript aimed at the British. Carroll s brother John was a priest and patriot who in 1789 was given the task of organizing the Catholic Church in this country. By 1791 he had assembled a synod, or assembly of delegates, to launch that task formally. Archbishop Carroll wanted to gain acceptance of our faith by American people who mistrusted our customs and could not comprehend our liturgy. He made the amazing proposal to Rome that our liturgy should be prayed not in Latin, but in the vernacular, English. His wish was denied, but one hundred sixty years later, his deep desire helped the American bishops and scholars at the Second Vatican Council to win the vote in favor of the vernacular not just for the United States, but for the Church throughout the world.
