2 Bulletin for September 2018 The Month dedicated to the Seven Sorrows of Mary. September, 2018 Dear Parish Family, As we enter the month of September, it s exciting to welcome back our students at St. Francis Parish School and to see so many of our young people going away to college. I am excited about our annual St. Francis Fiesta. The goal of the Fiesta is to serve as a parish fundraiser to benefit the many ministries at St. Francis who work tirelessly to serve the needs of this community. This year the event will be held on September 8 th and we will begin with mass at 4:00 pm at the Kern County Fairgrounds followed by food, fun and activities for the whole family. I hope you all come out and celebrate with us. I want to personally thank Francis Moore for his time and effort that went into organizing and leading the Ministry Seminars over the summer months. I d also like to thank all the staff members and ministry heads, who took time this summer to participate in these trainings, as we plan for another great year at St. Francis Parish. See you at the Fiesta! Blessings,

3 St. Francis Parish News & Announcements Check out our website! Join us for the St. Francis Parish From the desk of Heidi Scott, Director of Music and Liturgy Why We Do What We Do Why do we sing Alleluia? The Gospel Acclamation is sung for a dual purpose. First, it prepares the people of God to hear the Gospel and it enhances the procession to the ambo -where the Gospel is proclaimed. By its very meaning, the word Alleluia means to praise God, or more specifically Praise Ye Yah Praise Yahweh. The Gospel Acclamation is changed during Lent because our focus changes to fasting, almsgiving, and prayer. Just as our liturgical colors change, our focus turns to reflecting on our sins, asking forgiveness, and reconciliation. The Alleluia will return, as sure as the Son will rise, on that great Easter Vigil when we sing the Triple Alleluia! So the invitation is given every week: Sing Praise, Sing Alleluia! Sing it with joy! SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 8TH KERN COUNTY FAIRGROUNDS BUILDING #3 3:30 PM DOORS OPEN 4:00 PM MASS 5:00 PM FOOD & FESTIVITIES Saint Therese of Lisieux Feast Day St. Therese Feast Day Mass is on Monday, September 24 th at 5:30 pm in the Church. Saint Therese of Lisieux is recognized as one of the most influential models of sanctity. Popularly known as "The Little Flower of Jesus, St. Therese believed it was not necessary to accomplish heroic deeds in order to attain holiness, but to spread God s Love in little ways. Along with small acts of service, she devoted her life to prayer for the sinners, priests, and everyday people. Her simplicity and practical approach to spirituality gave her the natural aptitude to view all walks of life with equal understanding and compassion. Let s gather and learn more about her "Little Way. Therese promised to spend her time in Heaven working for those on Earth and would drop roses on us as a sign. In honor of Saint Therese of Lisieux, the Diocesan Patron Saint, we will pray for priests, nuns, parishioners, deacons, lay ministers, and the world. Come and celebrate this special mass with us!
