1 AQUINAS CATHOLIC COLLEGE MENAI 13 th May, 2013 Vol.20.No.11 FROM THE PRINCIPAL As we journey through the great season of Easter in 2013 we now find ourselves in its last week. It is a week that began with The Feast of the Ascension of the Lord, and concludes with the great hope of Pentecost Sunday. I know that many of Year 7 Class of 2014 are preparing for their Sacrament of Confirmation and wish them and their families a joyful celebration in their formal sacramental lives. Our Year 12s have had a week that I trust they will never forget; the Senior Retreat program is seminal in their development from senior school students to reflective young adults. I was lucky enough to be able to spend time with both groups who were at the Kiah Ridge and Kedron venues. I was struck by their thoughtful nature and willingness to engage in what is a deliberately structured spiritual exercise. Whilst retreats are not a formal Sacrament, they are a part of a sacramental life and the beauty of the venues certainly contributed to the context of the retreat experience. I would like to also acknowledge the efforts and generosity of the staff who were most willing to give up significant personal time to commit to the three days and two nights that allowed our Year 12s to experience such a time of grace. Thanks to Mr Snell, Ms Moore, Mr Wilson, Mrs McNamara, Ms Rundle, Ms Scarpignato, Mr Van der Kley, Mrs Buttling, Mrs Baird, Ms Capogreco, Mrs Fensom, Mr Gibson, Ms Kilzi, Mr McGrath, and Mr McGee. Especial thanks to our Religious Education Coordinator and Assistant, Mrs Nolan and Mr Strudwick for their organisation and leadership at the two venues. Once again Aquinas students have been busy in representing their College in representative sport; Congratulations to Tom Carr of Year 12 who has been selected in the NSWCCC Open Volley Ball Team that will compete in the upcoming NSW Championships. Well done Tom! We were also delighted to hear that Jake Baggaley of Year 12 has been selected in the Australian Team to compete in the World Junior Swimming Championships to be held in Dubai in August this year. Jake s efforts in being a highly dedicated swimmer whilst being so humble in his success are a testament to his character and a terrific role model to all of us at Aquinas. Good luck Jake! The support for us last weekend was overwhelming and your monetary donations will go a long way to relieve some of the financial burdens of this significant journey. Please continue to pray for us over the coming months as we prepare to undertake our pilgrimage. We look forward to sharing our life changing experience with the Parish when we return. 3 Religious Education at Aquinas Last week Year 12 participated in their retreat. The retreat was based on the theme of searching for happiness, allowing students to reflect on their relationship with their family, friends, themselves and their God. I would like to thank Year 12 for the way that they engaged with the opportunities presented to them, particularly the students who shared a part of their own story with their peers. I would also like to thank the staff who journeyed with them over their three days of retreat, and Fr Phil Zadro and Fr Marc Barry for celebrating the sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist with us. I would like to particularly thank Mr Peter Strudwick and Mr Michael Snell for their work during the preparation and running of the retreats. Year 7-10 students will sit their Half Yearly examinations during Weeks 5 and 6 of this term. They should be preparing for these tasks by revising their class work, and related chapters in their textbook, from the units that they completed in Term 1, as well as the current unit they are undertaking. Specific details on these assessment tasks will be provided to students shortly. Mrs Catherine Nolan Religious Education Coordinator 8 RE Test Practice 2010 Q 50 Emperor Constantine issued an edict which granted everyone in the Roman Empire religious freedom. This edict was called the Edict of A. Milan. B. Rome. C. Athens. D. Jerusalem. Previous Questions Answer: C Reflection on the Gospel In Sunday s Gospel (Luke 24:46-53) Jesus took the disciples to the outskirts of Bethany, blessed them, and withdrew from them and was carried up to heaven. The disciples worshipped him, and then went back to Jerusalem full of joy. The solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord is a day to be overwhelmed by the reality of the divinity of the one whom we have known in his humanity. It is when we consider the enthronement of Christ in the heavens, and the new body of Christ on earth. We have not been left alone - we have his power; we have each other. Together we make up the new body of Christ. be imbued with the hope that is so much a part of the mystery of the Ascension of Jesus Pope John Paul II Adapted from a reflection by Dianne Bergant CSS Congratulations to Nicole Miro who won three bronze medals at the NSW All Schools Swimming last Thursday at Homebush. She placed 3rd in the 50m Butterfly and Breastroke and the 200m freestyle relay in the multiclass category. She will now represent NSW at the School Sport Australia championships in Adelaide in September. Good luck Nicole! Enlivened by the Spirit 3

We have initiated a system where students may borrow sporting equipment to use at lunchtimes. This equipment includes footballs, soccer balls, basketballs, frisbees, tennis balls and skipping ropes. Students will need to bring their ID card to the PDHPE storeroom at the beginning of lunch to borrow equipment. Thank you again for the parental support of this initiative.
