2 SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ THANK YOU FROM NEW HOPE FOR CHILDREN Many thanks to all who participated in our "Relax and Unwind Friday" fundraiser for New Hope for Children. It was a delightful evening of friendship, music and song spent in the warmth of our Parish Life Center and surrounded by the magnificent sounds of the All Star Trio (see opposite). Many thanks as well to our generous donors, volunteers, and to everyone who participated in our tricky tray and 50/50 raffle. Cash prizes totaling almost $6,000 went to our lucky winners. Because of your generosity and support, homeless and refugee children in Ukraine will find comfort, love and safety in the Sisters of the Holy Eucharist Shelter. Your kindness will make it possible for many children to have a future of hope and promise. Thank you! 3 The Church Fathers were the foremost writers on the Faith between biblical times and the Middle Ages. Eight are regarded as the greatest: four in the Latin, or Western, Church (Ambrose, Augustine, Jerome and Gregory the Great) and four in the Greek, or Eastern, Church (Basil, Gregory of Nazianzus, John Chrysostom and Athanasius). Augustine and Gregory of Nazianzus became bishops after following long and winding paths to that office. Augustine immersed himself in the duties and burdens of a bishop, and still found time to produce an astonishing amount of writing. Gregory much preferred scholarly solitude away from the stormy controversies a bishop of his time so often had to deal with. Both had interesting and valuable thoughts on the sacramental means God has left us for overcoming the damage sin does to our lives. What they had to say can be very helpful as we make our spiritual preparations for Christmas. The Church has consistently recommended Advent as a time for making a good Confession, whether we need to in order to regain the state of grace or whether we aim to strengthen a friendship with the Lord that is already well in place. Augustine, writing at a time when many entered the Church as adults (and so with years of sinning accomplished), took note of how Baptism forgives all the sins of personal guilt its recipients may have committed: He nurtured me beside the water of Baptism, where those who have lost their soundness and strength are made new. (continued above) SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT ~ DECEMBER 10, 2017 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Our religion has often pointed out that, for those whose sins have separated them from God s life, going to confession is like receiving Baptism again, and so making a fresh start in life when we most need to do so. Gregory of Nazianzus, commenting on Jesus s description of himself as the Good Shepherd, one of the Lord s favorite ways to portray himself, reminded us that The Good Shepherd, who lays down his life for his sheep, came in search of the straying sheep. When he found it, he took it on the shoulders that bore the wood of the cross, and led it back to the life of heaven. This Monday at 7:30 pm our parish will host the Advent Penance Service we have been offering with St. Peter s in River Edge. This is a way our churches have been cooperating as part of the Archdiocese s New Energies initiative. Afer a prayer service and homily, the priests of both parishes will be available for confessions. Grzegorz Górny, in a recent book about St. Faustina, the modern saint who steadily called attention to the Divine Mercy, has aptly called the confessional a place where God s mercy triumphs over every weakness, over every sin and evil. That s why it s good to use it. Msgr. 4 SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ CHRISTMAS FLOWERS GIVING TREE GIFTS DUE BY DECEMBER 11 You are invited to make a donation in memory of a loved one or for a special intention toward the cost of decorating our worship spaces for the Christmas season. Please use the Flower Envelope that you received in the mail. (Extra envelopes are available at the doors of the church.) PRINT clearly on the envelope your intention, your name and phone number. Donation is $10 per name/family and payable to Saint Joseph Church. If you took a tag from one of our Giving Trees and purchased the requested gift, your wrapped gift with tag attached, should be dropped off at church today or at the rectory/parish office (105 Harrison Street, across the street from the church) by Monday, December 11. The tag you take from the tree is very important. It tells our office staff and the agencies we are helping for whom the gift is meant. It is extremely important that the tag you took from the Giving Tree be attached securely to the wrapped gift so that it will reach the correct person on Christmas. 6 SPECIAL MASS FOR THOSE AFFECTED BY ALCOHOLISM DECEMBER 16 A special mass and support group meeting for all who are affected by the disease of alcoholism will take place at the Church of St. Mary, 20 Legion Place, Closter, NJ on Saturday, December 16 at 12:00 noon. Mass is offered for the support, healing and recovery of not only the man/woman directly infected with the abuse of alcohol or drugs, but also for anyone involved in the life of the alcoholic or drug addict.
