7 When I come to end this race I've run And I receive the prize that Christ has won I will be with you in Paradise (2X) Sending & Blessing Postlude Worship Team - Doug Bardolph, Bethany DeHaan, Jennifer DeVries, Lori Helmus, Kyle Olson, Glenn Vanderveld, Dan Vlcek TODAY AT ELMHURST CRC If Jesus really is who he says he is, how does it work for us to join with him? To become part of his body? To benefit fully from his work? It may help us to understand how Jesus' sacrifice works, but what matters most is that God s work is in fact being done to us, and for us, and within us. This final message from Mere Christianity will conclude with an invitation to join up with Jesus Christ. NEXT WEEK AT ELMHURST CRC Next Sunday will be our annual Missions Celebration. Dr. Steve Timmermans, the Executive Director of our denomination, The Christian Reformed Church in North America, will be our guest preacher and share his perspective on the Holy Spirit's work on a national and global level. All worshippers are invited to stay after services for snacks and a short missions program, as we hear directly from missionaries that are supported by our church and hold up the work that God is doing to grow his Kingdom around the world. You can read Matthew 28:16-20 to prepare for this worship service. ANNOUNCEMENTS Informational Budget Meeting in Garden Room Today: David Zeilstra, Chair of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT), and Jack Lanenga, Executive Director of Operations, will be available to answer questions regarding the proposed 2016 budget and changes to the Covenant Education Plan. The meeting will be held in the Garden Room Sunday, January 31, beginning at 10:15 am and also after the second service at 11:45 am. There also will be an opportunity to attend an Informational Budget Meeting on Sunday, February 7, in the second floor Gathering Area, beginning at 10:15 am and also after the second service at 11:45 am. The annual Congregational Meeting will be held Tuesday, February 9, at 7:30 pm in the Garden Room. Items on the agenda include approving the budget and electing Elders and Deacons. Elder nominees are Paul Buikema, Doug Evenhouse, Richard Kuhr, Bill Kuiper, Dan Leo, Bill Terpstra, John Vander Kamp, and Greg Wolterstorff. Deacon nominees are Barb Bulthuis, John Deters, Paul Koldenhoven, Nathan Plasman, Dan Rudman, Phil Sikkenga, Brian Stolzenbach, and John Wilbraham. Materials for the congregational meeting, including nominee profiles and ballots, are available in the lobby. January 17 was our nation's designated "Sanctity of Human Life Sunday". This was a day to celebrate God's gift of life, commemorate the many lives lost to abortion, and commit ourselves to protecting human life at every stage. In the hallway by the nursery is a table at which you can pick up an empty baby bottle. Just fill it with loose change, dollar bills, or even checks, then return it to the church by February 14. You can drop it off in the CareNet cube behind the Information Center on Sunday or during the week. Your contributions will go to help our ministry partner, CareNet Pregnancy Services of DuPage, continue to offer compassion, hope, and help to anyone considering an abortion by presenting them with realistic alternatives and Christ-centered support, as well as providing support to those who have already had an abortion. Is your student interested in making Profession of Faith? Join them for an informational meeting January 31 at 10 am in the youth room. We will discuss a little bit about the process, the reason why we make Profession of Faith, and answer any questions you may have.

8 The two most important catalysts for spiritual growth are scripture reading and serving. With this in mind we want to encourage you to make a commitment to reading the scriptures this coming year. To assist with this we are offering a Bible Reading Plan called The Essential 100 (E100). This plan is an exciting systematic approach to reading the Bible. The E100 will guide you through the big picture of the Bible with carefully selected list of passages - 50 from the Old Testament and 50 from the New Testament. For more information visit elmhurstcrc.org/100days. Pathfinders: It doesn't look good for our scheduled sledding night on February 3! We will have a regular meeting at church instead. Our next GROW session will be on February 9 at 7 pm in the Upper Gathering Room. We will once again be blessed with Worship led by Elissa Metropoulos and Lauren Visser. Then, using the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:1-12) as a backdrop, we will transition into "What is Spiritual Formation: How Do We Open Ourselves to God?" We will engage in Spiritual Disciplines led by Lisa Capozzoli, Elissa Metropoulos, and Lauren Visser, and will close out the evening with Worship and prayer. Come and enjoy this special time to deepen your relationship with God. Ashes Meditation Music. You are invited to mark the first day of Lent by attending one of four special 15-minute Ash Wednesday events on February 10 at 6:30 a.m., 8:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., or 6:30 p.m. Each mini-service will include music, a time for quiet prayer, and will conclude with the imposition of ashes. The imposition of ashes is an ancient Christian tradition in which worshipers are marked on the forehead with ashes in the sign of the cross. This action has multiple layers of meaning: (1) Ashes are a symbol of our repentance, of our desire to turn back to God; (2) Ashes demonstrate our solidarity with Jesus, and with his journey to the cross and through the grave; (3) The sign of the cross in ashes is Christ s own signature on us that we belong to Him. Join the Single Mothers Support Group (SHE) on February 14 for a special Valentine's Day event where you will be encouraged and experience love. Anita Lustrea, co-host on Moody Radio, author, & conference speaker along with her husband, Mike Murphy, both who were divorced prior to marrying, will give you advice and hope! From 12:15-2:30 pm there will be a luncheon in the Garden Room. Children, infants-age 12, are welcome to attend and are dismissed at 1:15 for supervised activities. If you have any questions, contact Jane at jane.loerop@elmhurstcrc.org. No reservations are necessary and everyone is welcome! Save the date for our Heart-Felt Community Supper! Please join us on February 17 from 5:30-6:30 pm in the Garden Room for a delicious supper prepared by our Community Supper Team! The menu will include a heart-healthy meatloaf, baked potato, salad, roll, vegetable and dessert. We look forward to seeing you. Please reserve your spot now at dinners@elmhurstcrc.org. Annual ECRC Friends & Family Swim Party at the Oakbrook Aquatic Center: It is cold outside, but warm in Oak Brook Aquatic Center so come join us for an evening of swimming and splashing on February 20 from 6-8 pm! The price is only $10 per family or $3 per person. Complimentary snacks will be served. Register online at elmhurstcrc.org/events or pick up a form at the information center. What is Lent? Lent is the 40-day period from Ash Wednesday to Easter. The death and resurrection of Jesus Christ are at the heart of the Christian gospel, and Good Friday and Easter are two of the most significant celebrations of the Christian year. Lent is a season of preparation and repentance during which we anticipate Good Friday and Easter. Just as we carefully prepare for big events in our personal lives, such as a wedding or commencement, Lent invites us to make our hearts ready for remembering Jesus passion and celebrating Jesus resurrection. ~ The Worship Sourcebook (CRCNA/RCA publication)

9 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. Matthew 28: We believe that God has called us through the Great Commission to spread the news of the love of Jesus and the free gift of grace throughout our world. God is working here in the United States and across the world through our missionary partners as they minister and provide resources to the marginalized and poor, translate the Bible into new written languages, train pastors and lay personnel to extend and multiply their reach, and plant new churches.we are excited to be part of a team that acts as a liaison between our missionaries and you the church. And we encourage you to continue to support your missionary ambassadors through prayer, encouragement, and financial support. Join us next Sunday, February 7 for our annual Missions Celebration, and plan on staying after services for snacks and a short missions program, as we hear directly from missionaries that are supported by our church and hold up the work that God is doing to grow his Kingdom around the world. ~ ECRC Missions Team SERVE The children s worship staff is looking for dedicated people who want to share the love of Jesus with our children.
