1 University Presbyterian Church Order of Worship October 7, :30 am World Communion Sunday <<I N V I T E D >> Instrumental Prelude: Be Still My Soul arr. Albin Whitworth Hannah Byun, Principal Organist Opening Hymn #34: Rejoice, Ye Pure in Heart Rejoice, ye pure in heart, rejoice, give thanks, and sing; Your festal banner wave on high, the cross of Christ your King. With all the angel choirs, with all the saints on earth, Pour out the strains of joy and bliss, true rapture, noblest mirth! Yes, on through life s long path, still chanting as ye go; From youth to age, by night and day, in gladness and in woe. Still lift your standard high, still march in firm array; As warriors through the darkness toil till dawns the golden day. Welcome & Greeting Time Hymn #809: Doxology Praise God from whom all blessings flow, Praise him, all creatures here below; Praise him above, ye heavenly host, Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen. Prayer of Confession and Assurance of Pardon Hymn #517: The Solid Rock My hope is built on nothing less Than Jesus blood and righteousness. I dare not trust the sweetest frame, But wholly lean on Jesus name. On Christ, the solid rock, I stand All other ground is sinking sand
2 All other ground is sinking sand When darkness veils his lovely face, I rest on his unchanging grace. In every high and stormy gale, My anchor holds within the veil. His oath, his covenant, his blood Support me in the whelming flood. When all around my soul gives way, He then is all my hope and stay. When he shall come with trumpet sound, O may I then in him be found. Dressed in his righteousness alone, Faultless to stand before the throne. Invitation to Children s Worship < < W E H E A R > Offering Moment & Prayer of Dedication Tithes & Offerings: Base et Dessus de Trompette Louis Clérambault Hannah Byun, organ Sermon: Beginning Well Hope George Hinman Text: Luke 19: He entered Jericho and was passing through it. 2 A man was there named Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was rich. 3 He was trying to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was short in stature. 4 So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to see him, because he was going to pass that way. 5When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus, hurry and come down; for I must stay at your house today." 6 So he hurried down and was happy to welcome him. 7 All who saw it began to grumble and said, "He has gone to be the guest of one who is a sinner." 8 Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, "Look, half of my possessions, Lord, I will give to the poor; and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will pay back four times as much." 9 Then Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, because he too is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man came to seek out and to save the lost."
3 << WE RESPOND>> Hymn of Response #482: My Hope is in the Lord My hope is in the Lord who gave himself for me, and paid the price of all my sin at Calvary. No merit of my own his anger to suppress, my only hope is found in Jesus righteousness. And now for me he stands before the Father s throne, he shows his wounded hands, and names me as his own. His grace has planned it all; tis mine but to believe, and recognize his work of love, and Christ receive. Prayers of the People & the Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. Celebration of Communion For the Bread Which You Have Broken arr. Howard Helvey Cathedral Choir; Carreen Smith, director For the bread which you have broken, For the wine which you have poured, For the words which you have spoken, Now we give you thanks, O Lord. By this pledge that you do love us, By your gift of peace restored, By your call to heaven above us, Hallow all our lives, O Lord. With our sainted ones in glory Seated at the heavenly board, May the church that s waiting for you
4 Keep love s tie unbroken, Lord. In your service, Lord, defend us, In our hearts keep watch and ward; In the world where you have sent us, Let your kingdom come, O Lord. *Closing Hymn #708: Blest Be the Tie That Binds (st. 1) Blest be the tie that binds our hearts in Christian love; The fellowship of kindred minds is like to that above. Benediction Instrumental Postlude: All Hail the Power of Jesus Name arr. Lani Smith Hannah Byun, organ _+_+_+_+_+_+_+_ TODAY S WORSHIP PARTICIPANTS: George Hinman, Senior Pastor Tim Snow, Executive Pastor Paul Smith, Liturgist Carreen Smith, Guest Choir Director Hannah Byun, Principal Organist CURRENT SERMON SERIES SEASONS: Finding opportunity in life s transitions The only thing certain is change. Growth is change. Loss is change. Life is change. Sometimes we welcome change; sometimes we fear it. But we all experience it: a new year in school, retirement, a new job, moving, marriage, an empty nest, divorce, a birth, changes in our church, changes in the culture... Change can be good, but it s often a challenge. And yet with Jesus there s always an opportunity. Together we will reflect on the changes in our lives, lean into Jesus, and navigate into new seasons of life well. To request Chancel flowers in memory or in honor of a loved one, please contact Bob Davies in the Worship department (x143, bobd@upc.org). Families with young children are always welcome to worship together in the Sanctuary. The service is also played on closed-circuit TV in Knox Parlor, just outside the Sanctuary, which is available for parents and children, if desired. NEXT SUNDAY: October 14 Sermon: Speaking the Truth in Love Guest Preacher Alex Cui Text: Ephesians 4:1-16 COPYRIGHT INFORMATION
