3 The Great Thanksgiving for Advent The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. You formed us in your image and breathed into us the breath of life. When we turned away, and our love failed, your love remained steadfast. You delivered us from captivity, made covenant to be our sovereign God, and spoke to us through the prophets, who looked for that day when justice shall roll down like waters and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream, when nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore. And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven we praise your name and join their unending hymn: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again. Pour out your Holy Spirit on us gathered here, and on these gifts of bread and wine. Make them be for us the body and blood of Christ, that we may be for the world the body of Christ, redeemed by his blood. 4 MISSION OF THE MONTH Samaritan s Purse After sharing the story of the Good Samaritan, Jesus said Go and do likewise. That is the mission of Samaritan s Purse to follow the example of Christ by helping those in need and proclaiming the hope of the Gospel. Samaritan s Purse is a nondenominational evangelical Christian organization providing spiritual and physical aid to hurting people around the world. Since 1970, Samaritan s Purse has helped meet needs of people who are victims of war, poverty, natural disasters, disease, and famine with the purpose of sharing God s love through His Son, Jesus Christ. The organization serves the church worldwide to promote the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. To donate to the Mission of the Month, please use the envelope in the pew or go to GIVE online at OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD This Samaritan s Purse project collects and delivers gift-filled shoeboxes to children in more than 150 countries and territories. 7 Be Inspired As a lay led church, volunteers are the life blood of Roser, and critical to the pursuit of our mission of Loving Christ, Sharing His Grace, and Serving All. At any point in time there are probably in excess of 100 positions filled by volunteers giving of their time and talent. This includes serving on the regular standing boards and committees and any number of other activities: Pancake Breakfasts, Thanksgiving Dinners, flood relief assistance, special purpose committees, and many more see summary below! Each year on FOUNDERS DAY we recognize people for their exceptional volunteering. Simply defined an Exceptional Volunteer gives of time and talent, above and beyond, over an extended period. Last Sunday we recognized three individuals and two couples for their exceptional volunteering. This was my first year coordinating this event and I cannot begin to put into words my appreciation for the assistance and guidance I received from the veterans on my committee. We could not have been so well prepared without their assistance. We heard nothing but compliments to our expert cooks and the beautiful decorations. I stopped by a number of tables and all echoed what Jill Morris wrote below: I had the pleasure of working as a server in the food line. So many people raved about the food and were so appreciative of the meal. People wanted the chefs to know how well everything was prepared. I personally can vouch for the sweet potato casserole. They train for over 50 hours in basic counseling and ministry as well as actively participate in their own Christian growth and effective sharing with others. They know how to listen, provide perspective, maintain total confidence and privacy, and walk with you through turbulent times.
