(justuandi@verizon.net) Welcoming Ministry Phyllis Simonich (phyllis.simonich@verizon.net) Fourth Sunday of Advent In proclaiming the Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis proclaimed his desire that this Holy Year be steeped in mercy, as we disciples go out to every man and woman, bringing the balm of mercy to believers and those far away, as a sign that the Kingdom of God is already present in our midst! (Misericordiae Vultus, 5). In her visitation of Elizabeth, Mary beautifully presents just such an image. Despite the perils of her pregnancy, not to mention her preoccupations as a young unwed mother, Mary instantly, unselfishly, goes out of herself, hastening far and over dangerous terrain, to bring the balm of God s tender mercy in assistance rendered to her older relative. Since baptism and the Eucharist have made us, in a way, bearers of the living Christ within as Mary was, such selfless going out of ourselves to be of loving service to others in mercy should especially mark our Christmas season this Jubilee Year. --Peter Scagnelli, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Papal quotes Copyright (c) 2015, Libreria Editrice Vaticana. Used with permission. QUESTION OF THE WEEK Adult: When was it hardest for you to trust in God s plan for you, as Mary did? What can help you at such times? Youth: How would you describe being blessed and trusted by God? NEXT SUNDAY S READINGS First Reading -- Hannah gives her son Samuel back to the LORD, leaving him in the temple at Shiloh: As long as he lives, he shall be dedicated to the LORD (1 Samuel 1:20-22, 24-28) or Sirach 3:2-6, Psalm -- Blessed are they who dwell in your house, O Lord (Psalm 84) or Psalm 128. Second Reading -- We are children of God when we believe in the name of God s Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another just as he commanded us (1 Jn 3:1-2, 21-24) or Colossians 3:12-21 [12-17].

4 Jubilee Year of Mercy Corporal Works of Mercy Opportunities Pope Francis has declared this year to be a Jubilee Year of Mercy. Our celebration this year calls us to remember and pray for all those who suffer. From our Christian brothers and sisters who are persecuted for their faith to all those who struggle trying to make ends meet and often have to go to bed hungry at night, for those seeking meaningful employment, for the immigrant driven from their country by violence or poverty and trying to establish a home. Our Holy Father calls us to reach out to these our brothers and sisters and remind them that God s love is ever present for them. This can become the year in which we are touched by the Lord Jesus and are transformed by His mercy, and become witnesses to that mercy. Here at St. Julie s we have a number of ministries who each week reach out to those in need. We encourage you to take this opportunity to learn about these ministries and then discern if God is calling you to join us in making a difference to those in need. Let us become the hope that so many yearn for. African Outreach: In 2008, our parish established a partnership with the Sisters of Notre Dame who run an elementary and secondary boarding school in Busessa, Uguanda. Through this relationship, we have raised funds to electrify the school buildings, the construction of dormitories, the purchase of a van for transportation, and most recently the construction of a preschool. Ministry Contact: Deacon Dave Smith x1 or dsmith@stjulieschurch.org Helping Hands: This ministry consists of 204 loving and caring men and women who give up their time and energy to help those in need. We give help to shut-ins, new mothers, and sick parishioners. We offer a community prayer tree, transportation, and bereavement help. More ministers are always welcome. Ministry Contact: Sally Kutcher (805) kutchers2@roadrunner.com
5 Mexico Mission Trip: Each year during Easter break our parish sponsors our high school and Confirmation students for a mission trip to the Tecate and Tijuana area of Mexico to build homes for families in need. Our students and their adult chaperones spend a week constructing homes with no power tools including the hand mixing of a cement floor slab. Since the year 2000, over 1500 parish members have traveled to Mexico and have built 75 homes. Ministry Contact: Deacon Dave Smith x1 or dsmith@stjulieschurch.org Prayer Shawl Ministry: We make and distribute prayer shawls, lap blankets, baby blankets, to not only those who are sick, but to anyone who needs a tangible gift of God s love. We meet the first Monday of the month in the Parish Hall, room 1 from 7:30-9:00 p.m. Ministry Contact: Karen Seemann (805) cwseemann@yahoo.com St. Francis Center: The St. Francis Center serves the hungry and needy of Los Angeles. With St. Julies families, we support their efforts with 3 annual holiday food basket deliveries to over 100 poor families. All is coordinated by our volunteers. If you would like to adopt a family or volunteer, please contact us. Ministry Contact: Carlos Galan and Jane Coccia (805) npcoccia@yahoo.com St. Vincent de Paul: A Catholic organization open to both men and women who wish to grow in their faith by serving their neighbor. Inspired by Gospel values and nourished by prayer and reflections, members of the society are committed to provide to individuals and families in need. Vincentians witness God s love by embracing all works of charity and justice. A Food Pantry has been established this year and now has served over 300 families from food donations from our Parishioners in partnership with the Food Share Program. Ministry Contact: Ben Rael (805) bennhtr@gmail.com Winter Shelter: This ministry along with 25 other churches and synagogues in the Conejo Valley, provide food and shelter each Saturday night in the parish center for the local needy community. Last year our Shelter served 2600 home cooked dinners and accommodated 520 overnight stays. Ministry Contact: Monica Milano (805) nolanmilano@gmail.com Small yet strong in the love of God, like Saint Francis of Assisi, all of us, as Christians, are called to watch over and protect the fragile world in which we live, and all its peoples. ~Pope Francis
6 Dear Brothers and Sisters: Meister Eckhart wrote, The birth of Christ in the stable does us no good unless he is born within ourselves as well. That is the whole purpose of Christmas, the whole purpose of the Incarnation of the Son into a body and a life like our own. That happened so the Son can lived permanently and vividly in our own being. It happened so we can know Him within us and love Him in the stable of our own heart! A blessed Christmas to you and yours! Lovingly in Christ, Father Paul J. Hruby and your Parish Staff.
